Default What Exchange ActiveSync Features are available?

My company requires the following features be natively available in the device before it is accepted on the network. I have looked long and hard and cannot find anything. Actually, I contacted Sprint and they said remote wipe wasn't available and neither was local wipe. Having heard all the hoopla about the Evo, I can't imagine it doesn't support those two.

Can someone please share their knowledge with me? Do you currently use the Evo with your work and does it support these things?

Note that I am aware that third party applications would be used, but the chance of my company using a third party application just for my device and a few others is nil.

The information below is the minimum security requirement.

1. ActiveSync protocol for information transfer.
2. Locking the mobile device with a four digit PIN after inactivity.
3. Remote wipe of all information from the mobile device.
4. Local wipe of all information from the mobile device if multiple PIN attempts fail.

Thanks a ton.

1. yes
2. yes
3. yes
4. can be setup per IT department.

EAS supports all of those options. i am on a company EAS that is blackberry heavy, with iphones next and android devices quickly gaining momentum. the company i work for is one of the largest media companies in the universe. well over 5000 people employed.

ANY device that is going to use this company's EAS must be able to support all of the above items you have listed. i had a hero that didnt allow #3 but froyo made that an option and now on the evo i use all 4 are supported.

mobile defense and lookout are two programs you can install to monitor and track your device. your IT department can use either program to control your handset as well. i know you mentioned its 3rd party so you can just use it for yourself.

frankly, im surprised your IT dept. does not know that Android can (some handsets cant--EVO is not one of those however) supports these options.

Thanks for your reply. Could you please elaborate when you say number 4 can be setup per IT department. Right now the only Android approved for use is the Incredible. They have stated they won't review all Android devices to see if they are compatible.

I am also planning to personally buy this phone, but use it for corporate use. With that in mind, my IT department aren't inclined to do anything special to enable me to use it. If 4 requires anything special then it would not work.

Thanks in advance!

i dont know the size of your company and what handsets they use but the company i use EAS on can remote wipe my evo. your IT dept. can set this up depending on the version of EAS you guys are using. maybe officially the incredible is the only listed handset for remote wipe but i assure you the IT dept. that manages the exchange i use can remote wipe.

those apps i mentioned can initiate a remote wipe directly from a computer. you can also geo-locate the handset and shut it off/lock it.

Again, thanks for the information. If I read what you are saying clearly, I interpret this to mean that local wipe is possible through EAS and the IT department would need to set this up. Basically, there are no device limitations with the Evo or Froyo for that matter.

With that information I can now go out and purchase the Evo.

Thanks, J

yes. IT can limit what options of Exchange they can implement on certain platforms. after Froyo, the IT department of the company i use EAS on finally gave the last mile OK to support these handsets.

i would first contact your IT department... befriend a tech and let him or her give you the scoop on what options they can implement. make sure they DO have the ability to remote wipe. it is possible but IT needs to have the infrastructure in place for the Android OS to implement.

keep us posted on what you find out....

Actually the 4 elements I posted in the first post were the IT requirements to be able to use the phone on our company's system. Given that there are no phone limitations I see no reason they shouldn't be able to do this. Now just waiting till Feb. 7th or just after to get my phone.

Thanks a million.
