UPDATE: My phone now works normally. It finally acknowledges cables and charges again. Still no idea what the issue was.
My Evo will no longer recognize a charger or turn on. Without being plugged into the wall, the power button does nothing. Even when it is plugged in, it will turn on, flash the white "HTC EVO 4G" screen for about half a second, and then turn off. When plugged in the notification light does not come on.
I've tried charging using any combination of the following cables and USB wall chargers, and at different outlets, and nothing has worked.
- Apple iPod wall charger
- HTC OEM wall charger
- Palm Pre OEM wall charger
- HTC OEM USB cable
- Palm OEM USB Cable
- Aftermarket USB Cable
The only real idea I have to what's going on is that the charging port somehow got broken, but that seems strange to me because it worked when I woke up, allowing me to send a few texts. I left my room for a few hours, and when I came back the Evo was dead.
Any ideas as to what's wrong?
I've tried to be through, but if you need more information I'd be happy to try and give it to you.

If the phone just died, and won't charge, it's probably the battery (ok, it's *hopefully* the battery), but probably not the charging port. If it were, I don't see why the phone would have just died. Your best bet is to bring the phone in to Sprint, and they can test it with a different battery.
I was charging the phone, as it was at less than 10% battery life... while it was charging I was checking out a Youtube video when the phone just died. I didn't think anything of it at the time - I just let it sit plugged in. Came back about 30 minutes later and noticed that the charging indicator light wasn't on. Now I can't turn the phone on or charge it.
Were you able to resolve your issue?
thanks,
reggie.

Same exact thing happened to me, it was at about 5% battery, except for me i saw a message, and all i saw was 'battery' in the message, then i got a text, i tried to close it but my battery died. Won't turn on, dosen't charge either, no notification.
I really wish i saw what that message said, it was pretty long too.
Same thing here. I have had my evo exactly a month to date and today I was babysitting and I knew my phone had a low battery but I was trying to reply to a text really quick before I had to turn it off. Of course, it turned itself off right as I was finishing. I figured I'd just plug it in when I was done on the job so I didn't think much of it, just put it away. I plugged it into my car charger when I was done and nothin happened. No charging light, no turn on, nada. I tried to remove the battery and that didn't work either. When I got home I plugged it into my HTC wall charger and that didn't work. I tried removing the battery again, nothing. I waited a little while and tried again and the white screen flashed for a second then blackness. I have no idea what is happening but I'm pissed. Like I said, I've only had the thing for a month and the whole time its had an otterbox on it and nothing has spilled on it or anything. I bought this phone mainly because its supposed to be the best phone on the market, yet it won't even turm on. If anyone can give me some pointers on what I can do personally it would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Ok, my phone just seemed to randomly start working again.. I left the battery out for a long time, about 12 hours and i hooked the Usb up to my computer, and yeah its on right now working, idk what all of that was about.

Probably a low-battery issue. The battery shuts itself down to prevent full discharge (totally makes battery useless and un-rechargeable). Leave it out overnight, then recharge in phone with phone turned off until green light returns. It should show the orange light for charging and green when finished as normal.
From what I've seen of this type of issue, it's almost always battery power-related, not the phone or OS.
My EVO issue is similar in that it won't charge from anywhere except the USB from my computer. I have tried 3 wall chargers, including the USB wall adapter that came with the phone, to no avail. The phone wouldn't power up at all. This morning I plugged it into my laptop and it went from 0 charge to 100% in about 5 minutes and is now working except for the wall charge issue. Pretty frustrating.
This just happened to me, too. I took it to the sprint store and they swapped batteries for me and it turned back on like there was no problem. The girl told me that there's a chance that Super Task Killer was responsible for the battery issues so I wanted to check and see if others suffering from this were using task killer, as well, or had ever installed it.
My Evo just quit. It won't charge and no lights come on indicating that the phone is charging. I tried the boot(volume down and power button) to no avail. I realize that the phone was nearly totally discharged and it was rather warm this morning. Seems like the other problems that are in this thread.

That is exactly what just happened to mine. Phone died, didn't think anything of it, and now it shows me a very faint red/orange light for 2-3 seconds and then nothing. won't turn on, anything! I need it to turn on like now! I have to call the babysitter for my son!
Same thing happened to mine and I have never used any kind of Task Killer.
This is the second time that this has happened to me in 3 months. The batteries are useless. The fisrt time, I took it to the Sprint store and they were able to charge it (an hour) and now its happened again; will not charge or turn on. I do not want to sit at the Sprint store for another hour.
im actually quiet relieved that its just the battery. i was worried for a second i thought it might have been the charging port on the phone itself i even started taking it apart to look at it. Its not like i would've know how to fix it anyway. the only reason i opened it up was because its not like i can take the phone to sprint the phone is flashed and im with cricket. so again i was just relieved to find out that this is a known issue and hopefully this new battery will do the trick. it makes sense though because i wasnt updating the phone or anything just reading some text so im sure it'll work but im gonna be phoneless for about a week so that sucks

I really shouldn't be commenting here, but isn't letting your battery get that low similar to gastank roulette? When I owned a Honda, I was warned that I should never let the tank run dry, it would damage all kinds of things. (Was that really true??)
But then I'm a Nervous Nell with the gastank, so my phone batt is never allowed to get below 45%.
its really hard to stay on top of your battery at all times. the battery life on these things are ridiculous one second they will be at 50% then a facebook status update and text later the battery has gone down 10%. k i know thats an exaggeration but thats what it feels like.

Bump charging, using batteries off eBay, and using cheap chargers cause this problem.
And, I want to emphasize that 1) I was not messing with anything, 2) I used the exact charger that came with the phone. So, let's not get carried away with the tendency to blame any and all problems on someone downloading something bad or using a cheap charger.
That said, it could be the chargers fault. I had been charging my phone on borrowed chargers for several months, and the battery life was great. Even when I let the battery discharge to the point of the phone turning off to save data. Then, I went back to using the original charger and immediately, the battery on the phone was exceedingly hot when I removed the phone and the battery life was cut roughly in half. The next time I tried to use that same charger (phone was at maybe 20%, but that was almost dead at that point due to the decreased battery life), I left it overnight only to find it with no battery life the next morning. Hasn't consistently charged yet. I can get the blinking orange light for 5-10 seconds, max, and then all's dead. This is both from the original charger that came with the phone and via USB via my computer.
I don't expect a fix, it's probably a dead battery due to the terrible charger Sprint gave me, I'm just giving some support to the idea that this can be, and likely is at least sometimes, a Sprint hardware problem and not simply Evo owners being stupid and cheap as some people like to imply.
its not showing that it is charging. (the battery is not moving while plugged in.) it has the orange light. sometimes when i text its shuting off and when i try to turn it back on it wont turn on. it just started happening today, (july 7, 2011 @ 12:30pm) i had it plugged into the computer in my class and it had died @ 11:50 today. i really nee dto figure out whats going on. i ride city buses in the worst parts of town, i need my phone !!!!!
This is very similar to my situation.
I have two HTC Evo's, one is for my wife and one is mine.
My wife's died on her a few weeks ago. I looked at it and tried swapping the batteries with hers and mine to see if that was the problem. It was, so I thought it was just a defective battery.
I bought a replacement battery on ebay, and sure enough that one did the same thing a week later.
We'll leave it plugged in at 50% and a few hours later its actually down to 20% left when it should have been charging the whole time.
I took it to the sprint store and they said it would be $35 to fix it since I don't have handset insurance.
seems like a bad deal because all they did to "fix" it was replace the battery again....
Evo Won't Power "ON" False sense of actually charging
Hello, After reading many similar posts I am somewhat disappointed in the response or I should say "lack of" I have a Sprint Evo 4G, to simplify, it will not power on what so ever. I plug it up and it looks as if it is charging. (The charge indicator light is on) however, it is not actually charging at all. I know this because I also have an extended battery that I purchased as a result of the Evo's great battery life, and once it ran down it will now not recharge as well. I took my phone to a Sprint store and as always their fix all solution of a hard reset did not work. (It never has for any of my issues) I am going back today and will return to the Sprint Store today. I will post a detailed post of this problem's outcome today.

So I just got off of the chat page with sprint and they told me I can either send in my phone to get it repaired or I can call Asurion and get a new phone or I can go to a sprint store and see if they can fix it.
There is something goofy with these EVO's. I bought one for my wife and one for me back in April. Worked fine until about a month ago. My wife has gone thru 3 batteries in 3 weeks. They keep saying it is the battery. So this morning I plug her phone in and nothing. no orange light... no blinking orange light nothing... So I take the battery out of her phone and put it in my phone and poof it lights up and starts charging. Then I take my battery and put it in hers... it starts charging with no problem.. I don't know what controls the charging of the battery but it seems something isn't right with it.
On top of that sometimes it starts out charging when we go to bed and when I get up one of the phones has a green light and the other is off and won't turn on. switch the batteries plug in the charger and poof it charges up and starts. It's like one stops charging in the middle of the night for no reason and the phone drains dead by morning.

This is what happened to mine last night. I put it on the charger like any other time and then when I woke up, there was no light indicating anything and I couldn't power it on. I took it off the charger, took the battery out for a few minutes, put it back in and then put it back on the charger. The light flashed for a few minutes and then went solid (orange/red) and charged up for a couple hours till it was green.
I have had my phone 14 months and this is the first battery issue I have had. I don't know if I should buy a new OEM battery or what.
OK The same thing just happened to me .
I'm at work on a friday alone on phone duty listing to streaming music on my evo that is pluged into my computers usb. Suddenly the music stops. I thought it was a data issue with the stream. I was going to change the channel an saw my phone was off. My charge light was not lit but I was still plugged into the computers USB. several attemps to turn it on with little more than a failed attempt to start up led me to this forum. Having read about the battery being suspect I pulled it out and it was warm. I sprayed it with instant chill and tried again still with failed attemps. I pulled the battery and tested it with a voltage tester. There are 4 contacts on the battery. the outside one closest to the edge is a positive and the other 3 are negative. I tested 2.6 volts offthe positive to each of the 3 negatives. I pulled the test leads out of the tester and used alligator clips to connect them to a 12 vold alarm battery . Holding the positive lead to the positive connection on the battery , I quickly tapped each of the negative contacts a few times with the negative lead from the 12 volt battery. ONLY FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND TAP EACH TIME. After repeating this a few times I rechecked the battery voltage again and fount the battery had come back up to 2.9 volts!!! I repeated this procedure again and rechecked my battery at 3.1 volts. Not wanting to press my luck further , I placed the battery back into the phone and it started to charge right away. I turned it on after about 3 minutes without issue. 10 minutes later I am at 18% no that's 19% and climbing. Hope this helps others with this issue. Glad I found this forum, otherwise I would not have had any idea where to start. Warning!!! DO NOT HOLD LEADS TO THE BATTERY! , ONLY A QUICK TAP TO THE CONTACTS TO BUMP IT. OTHERWISE YOU MIGHT CAUSE THE BATTERY TO GASS OUT AND POP!! DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING AS I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BATTERY OR PHONE ! Those with an understanding of how batteries and chargers work , or anyone who has properly jumpstarted a car will understand exactly what I just did.
Oh BTW 28% and climbing!

As a follow up to my last post.
Even plugged in and charging, you can have an app that drains your battery if your using power faster than your putting it in ! Check your battery when running apps every so often to see if it's holding it's charge or loosing ground. especially new apps that you have no way of knowing what they use power wise. I don't know if my phone did not give me a notification about the battery because it was already plugged in,or If I just did not hear it over the music. :-)
seeing as there wasn't an answer, posted...i'll say this, my phone had this problem yesterday, and i took it down to the sprint store. they wiped the phone clean, all contacts were backed up automatically using the gmail account on my phone. sooooooo-
you'll need to take this to your sprint store, and they will wipe it clean. it IS NOT your battery.
I have had my Evo 4G for nearly a year now and I've never had battery issues until tonight, other than when plugged into my laptop rather than a wall-charger. The thing about using the USB on your laptop is basically you're using a lot of battery power from it, its already drained and then you plug your phone in in an attempt to obtain more power from the laptop; Sometimes there isnt ENOUGH power and the phone simply cannot charge. Especially if you have something running on both devices.
Tonight, My phone woouldnt even charge by wall. I did the freezer trick and IT WORKED. I was SO excited

that just takes you to the bootloader. so can you boot up from there? if so all you really did was a soft reboot by powering off. the bootloader will not really do anything unless you select clear storage which will do a factory reset for you.

Fixed my EVO blinking amber/orange light by changing the charging cable; I saw this suggestion on another post. My Evo would not turn on or charge whether plugged into my computer via USB or into a wall outlet. After plugging in with an extra charging cable I had, the amber/orange light blinked a few times and then became solid. At this point my Evo was able to be powered on.
Same exact thing happened to me, it was at about 5% battery, except for me i saw a message, and all i saw was 'battery' in the message, then i got a text, i tried to close it but my battery died. Won't turn on, dosen't charge either, no notification.
I really wish i saw what that message said, it was pretty long too.
i had a notification a battery pop up too it was at like 7% it said that the charger was not supplying enough power to charge the battery, and to switch to a different charger
I think I've figured it out!! I was ready to give up the phone , but now I feel a little more hopeful . I have been having this problem off and on for weeks and completely frustrated!! So after reading several threads on many sites on this subject, I decided to really check out my phone. I tried several different ways of charging it, using different ports.....thinking it wasn't charging. Switched out batteries....thinking it was the battery. So I took off the back cover just the one over the battery and just starting looking to see if anything looked off. I'm not super techno savvy, but learning and have to admit this phone is pretty intimidating when it comes to that. I assumed it had to be a software problem. I am however a bit electronic savvy...so, I decided to look at the basics first....with my phone it seems to have come down to a simple power button sticking. I noticed that there was an ever so slight gap where the outer casing comes together on the end where the headphone and power button is. It looks as if the screw just needs to be tightened. It's a big enough gap that dust particals and skin oils can get in there. I then took my fingernail and gave the power button a deep hard push....tadah!...my phone popped on. It's been two days and is still doing okay....It's still sticking, however it is apparent it is the button, you can tell because it isn't out as much....this phone is so sleek, you can hardly notice it. I'm sure once I take the back case off and clean it, it's going to work fine. You do need a very, very small star tool for the screws....I think I have one around here from my blackberry, when the ball would stick and get dirty. For now I'm keeping my rubber/plastic otterbox protective case off, because that prevents the button from working all together. Anyhow, my assumption as to why it appears to be a battery/charging lssue is because....if you are like me I have my screen set to shut down after a couple of minutes to save on battery life, so as you know when you pick it up to use it, you hit the power button to bring up the screen. Well when it doesn't come up, you assume it's dead, so you plug it in, which will make the screen pop on and off without using the power button...so that gives the impression it's a power issue. The problem with switching out the battery or popping out the battery to reboot is this....if your battery is to low and switch out the battery, you have to use your power button to turn it back on and/or you don't have enough battery to reboot fast enough so the screen powers off before it's done, giving the impression again that it is a battery problem. When you reboot with a fully charged battery it will pop back on quickly, again giving the impression it's a battery problem. Also, having said all this, when I did first get my phone the charging cord that came with it was crap and quit making connection within the first month, they replaced it with a more durable cord. That was apparent though, because it showed it wasn't charging. I hope this helps someone!
Day 1: Noticed phone wasn't charging all the way to full. Charge light on, charge symbol flashing on phone, but when unplugged, no charge added.
Day 2: Woke up and phone was dead. Would not turn on. Took it to Sprint. They could not find the problem. They thought maybe it was a bad battery. Just bought a new one, and the same thing is happening.
It's not day 3 yet, but my assumption is that it will end up like day 2.
Can someone from Android pull their head out and give us a real answer..we know it's not the battery or the port...need a real answer here.
I am having the exact same problem and have an extra battery so have determined it is not the battery. Did you recently update the new HTC software from Sprint? I did the other day and started having this problem so think they may be connected. This is miserable so if anyone has a fix for this please let me know. Thanks for your assistance.
My Evo just quit. It won't charge and no lights come on indicating that the phone is charging. I tried the boot(volume down and power button) to no avail. I realize that the phone was nearly totally discharged and it was rather warm this morning. Seems like the other problems that are in this thread.
i did that too..mine quit about 2 hours ago...i took it apart and cleaned it all with a tooth brush...that worked last time..buit this time it aint doin nothing...i tried 2 other batteries that i have but that didnt work either..i tried the boot loader but it wont even bring that up either...but the difference is my phone said it had about 25% battery left...i set it in my car came bact 2 minutes later and it was off...and wouldnt recgonise a charger or anything

EXACT SAME thing happened with mine. did you get it to work?
My EVO issue is similar in that it won't charge from anywhere except the USB from my computer. I have tried 3 wall chargers, including the USB wall adapter that came with the phone, to no avail. The phone wouldn't power up at all. This morning I plugged it into my laptop and it went from 0 charge to 100% in about 5 minutes and is now working except for the wall charge issue. Pretty frustrating.
This is the same exact thing mines is doing! I've tried every charger, and nothing! The only one that works is the USB for my pc. But the phone doesn't pick it up easily I have to hold the plug in tight for a few seconds for it to pick it up.
This is very frustrating... It all started this week too, and I've not dropped the phone or anything!
HTC makes cheap garbage and sells it at a premium.
From what I can tell HTC just makes cheap stuff then they swindle everyone into buying their stuff. If not for that, they'd not have a company. If I wanted crud I'd buy Samsung. At least then I'd have a pretty name on it!
Seriously though, my HTC Evo 4G wasn't even 3 months old when it went bonkers. I had tried to root it, but it didn't take and I successfully did a Factory Reset. So it's not the Software what so ever. At least not the normal stuff. Here is the problem that arose: I would plug it in to charge, it would flash as if it were a really low battery for about 5 to 20 minutes and then it would stop attempting to charge.
I did what the other guy did and used another device to charge the battery. The problem I now have is that while I can use other devices (In this case my *much* older HTC Hero.) to charge the battery, the phone itself won't charge the original battery or the HTC Hero battery which I put it. The light will turn orange is if it's charging it, but when I check the charge level it's either the same or went down depending upon use. So essentially, it's telling a lie to me. It will claim it's charging it while not actually doing so.
I've been very careful with the phone. It's even had an Otter Box since I first got it. I've never let the battery get too low, never Bump Charged it, or anything else like that. It's quite ironic that I treated the HTC Evo 4G like gold and it died on me; meanwhile, my HTC Hero is finicky at best but I've treated it like crap and it still works. For the most part. The data sucks on it, but it's a First Gen that I've literally (In an Otter Box.) thrown across the room when angry. Go figures, right?!
So my questions are these: Is it a broken pathway, faulty basic programming, or what? Is this something I can fix myself, have to get Sprint to replace it, or will HTC replace it? (I only say replace because they seem to just give you one they've already fixed so you don't have to wait for your exact phone.)
P.S. If you ask me, it's a lot like the Xbox 360 solder problems. It's cheap and weak, so it falls apart easily. The problems I've seen with the HTC Evo seem to all be about the solder failing for the Power Button, and (So it would at least appear.) the charging port. I think maybe where it gets hot it's just enough for the solder to come undone. Then that causes other problems that arise. We (the consumer) shouldn't have to fix something as soon as we get it because the original company makes poor decisions. At least not at this price point...

Reason: An idea of what is wrong with these things.
I love my Evo but it has caused a ton of problems it crashed once and was repeating the 4g turn on non stop. I had to factory reset the phone, lost everything but what was saved on the card. now it wont charge. the red light comes on and it recognizes the charger but the batter doesn't hold the charge. and it keeps turning off randomly and not turning back on at all. I love evry thing about the Evo but t seems like its got some bugs to work out. I take great care of my phone i don't over charge or over heat the battery. I don't play a ton of games on it. I just don't understand why it keeps bugging out every few months. the Sprint store says a new battery will cost $40 not a big deal but I'm reluctant to spend it without any reassurance that it wont just keep happening. I don't think I should have to keep paying $40 every time this happens.
I have a Sprint-branded HTC EVO V 4G (REbranded 3D) on VM. I bought it the first day they were released on VM. For the last 7 months the phone worked flawlessly. I rooted and flashed a stock rom. Phone continued to work fine. No changes in the battery life or performance.
Last night, i was watching netflix on my phone when the screen dimmed like lights would when the power is about to go out. The phone then turned off without shutting down. I was concerned right away due to the flickering of the screen brightness.
I attempted to reboot and the four softkeys lit up but after about 10 seconds they turned off and the phone did nothing. It did not respond to charging last night. I swapped batteries with my wife's EVO V (same phone) and the phone did nothing but the same thing.
Today I went to RadioShack and bought another one since I needed a phone and they were on sale. I brought it home and after some tinkering this is what I found:
I used a volt meter on the battery from the failed EVO (I knew it was 50% charged when it shut off) and it read 0.000V on the meter.
I checked the volts on my new Evo's battery and it was 4.04V and put it in the malfunctioning phone. Nothing happened except the softkeys turning on. I pulled the new battery and checked the voltage and it had dropped to 3.1v while being in the old phone only momentarily.
I put the old (0.0v) in my new phone and charged it and then checked the voltage after 10 minutes and it registered 2.9Vs BUT would not boot u my new phone even while on charge.
So it appears to me that the charging/circuit system in the old phone went bad and may be shorted since it drains the battery almost instantly.

So it appears to me that the charging/circuit system in the old phone went bad and may be shorted since it drains the battery almost instantly.
hmmmmm interesting.
and just an fyi there is a HTC EVO V 4G - Android Forums......if you like i can create a thread and move this post over there so that others with the same phone can be aware of this issue.
