Default 2.3 Voice search or text not working

I updated to 2.3 this morning. I am not rooted or modded in any fashion. Just got the update and now my voice recognition (stock) software isn't working in handscent, stock messenger, or Google search bar. The Mic isn't moving at all like the thing isn't picking up any sound.

Anyone else having the problem?

Default Yes.

I have the exact same problem, that, and the Navigation won't stay open. It's pretty lame, as those two where the apps I easily used most. What gives?

I called Sprint went through some steps and they are sending me another EVO. I am not sure what the problem is, but that was sprints solution.

My wife and I are both experiencing the same issue with our Evos following the 2.3 update. It also deleted her alarms but not mine.

I just launched the voice search app again and it asked if I wanted to turn on "personalized recognition" and I said yes. The speech to text now works. You can find that setting under voice input in settings.

I'd try rebooting or giving it another shot. Mine was definitely not working on Friday, but has been working since.

Mine has been working intermittently since Friday, but my new EVO is set to arrive on Monday from sprint. I'll let you know once I get the phone updated if it is having the same issue.

I think I've figured out the cause. When I'm in an area with lots of ambient noise, it wont recognize my voice. This includes areas like my vehicle, the mall, theme parks. It only seems to work in very quiet areas like my home or office. There needs to be a software adjustment to it.

Same issue + VM icon issue, getting tired of clearing notification. I agree with justryan that when there's more noise the issue is worse. On my third EVO and this one was flawless untill 2.3 guess ill deal until my 3D arrives.

Default Voice Search Does not work while moving

I can absolutely verify that voice search does not work properly on my Evo (stock, unrooted) phone after OTA update to 2.3.

Here is where it gets weird. Works fine at home, works fine in car GOING LESS THAN 25MPH! Once the car is moving more that about 25mph, the mic no longer registers voice input. I have tested it over and over and over - reset the phone, done battery pulls, everything. GPS is off, toggling on GPS does not make a difference.

How does it know???? I have no idea, but try it for yourself - I would be interested to know if anyone has the same results. This is a real deal breaker for me as I use voice to text and voice command on the road a lot.

Also, while I have not had any issue with the infamous voicemail icon getting stuck, I did notice that my wi-fi signal is not nearly as good. I have read it is because wireless N is no longer supported, but I have not been able to verify that. All I know is I do not get signal in my house in places where I used to, like my bedroom and bathroom.

Last but not least, I have noticed some 3g drop out while moving - I will be surfing and all the sudden I have no data connection and the only way to get it back is to toggle mobile data and it comes right back. Probably happened 10x yesterday on a 2 hour drive in metro area.

Right now, I am waiting for unrevoked 3.4 to come out so I can root this thing and go back to 2.2.

Yep stv is correct. I am having the same issue. I thought you were nuts about it not registering only while moving. But sure enough I stopped and it worked fine. This is TERRIBLE, I use the voice function all of the time while im driving, for directions etc...

If anyone figures out the fix for this please post it up. I am not technically savy enough to know how to root the phone and revert back to 2.2. But I'll do some research because I really like the voice feature.

I even tried having it fix itself. "Phone fix voice recognition." No luck. ;-)

EDIT: I think it has to do more with the ambient noise. When I am stopped it will not pick up my voice with the a/c on. I have to turn it off, then it will hear my voice and work fine.

Blush Possible fix? or at least a temporary solution.

Obviously background noise is a big problem after the 2.3 update. Here's a possible solution to the problem for now.

Try going to the android market and download Google Voice and Google Voice Search. (an old version if possible)
A similar problem happened with the Nexus one upon the 2.3 update and this was one of the solutions to fix the problem. It may be worth a try? I just downloaded and installed the google voice app and all seems to be well. We'll see how well it works when I'm in an environment with more background noise such as my car going down the road with the A/C on. So far I believe I can see an improvement, though but I have not yet fully battle tested it on the highway yet.

Update: Sorry folks. That was a waste of time. I should have driven with it before even posting. I was optimistic since it appeared to work fine in my job with background noise but not so much in the car.

I can't download or uninstall Voice Search as it's already "installed". I did uninstall and reinstall Google Voice. Not sure that this will make a difference as they are two entirely different apps.

I spoke to Sprint technical support about this today and they made a note of it with the revisions support team. I recommend everyone call to help bring this issue higher in priority.

Ambient noise is definitely the problem. I have downloaded Google voice and the problem still exists. Oddly enough Voice search was updated when 2.3 was installed. Hopefully someone can figure this out asap as I like 2.3 but not the bugs.

To me it seems/appears that the update made the microphone uber sensitive. So any background noise(s) interfere with whatever you're saying.

I don't use my voice command unless I'm inside, I dont want people in my business, so this wasn't noticeable until I went outside to try it.

I also have the same thing, its when driving especially, this is super annoying...don't they test this stuff before releasing it!!!!! What ever they did its worse now with 2.3 I may go back to 2.2 just cause this is so annoying!!! is there any updates coming that anyone has heard about yet to fix this issue, They should just go back to what was on 2.2 now even....it was better than this version!!

I read on the Spint Community Forums last night that Sprint is aware of the issue, among others, and is working on a 2.3 update that will fix things. No word on a release date.

Thats exactly what i get, the microphone shuts off if ur moving. I can tell cuz when u look at the screen u can see there is no recognition in the microphone icon on the screen. No matter how quiet it is in the car and my car is very quiet. I can get it to work as soon as i stop! So im thinking its something google did to stop us from texting and driving, but what if were the passenger? I hate being restricted like that. How do we break this so we can get back to our normal voice search.

Default temp fix

Same problem here.Haven't tried this while moving, but in my noisy workspace I can hold my finger over the mic. (small hole on bottom, left of center) and it works fine. Annoying but still a temporary fix.

I may have a solution. I cleared the data on voice search and then under applications un-checked Fast boot and restarted the phone. I had to reset the Voice Personalization after the reboot but so far it is working. I will test in my car above 25mph and report back.

How crazy! This made mine work too. The challenge is, the microphone still seems to pick up ambient noise when you do this, so it doesn't know when to stop recording. Still cool that you figured this out.

Google has released an update in the market for Voice Search. I was excited to see it, but when I installed it, it didn't fix the issue. I'm wondering if this is something more related to HTC than Google.

Thx so much that worked perfectly for my EVO. Turned it off waited 30 seconds turned it back on and went to voice search it works fine, then I went back to the google search which had previously never had enough mic volume to hear me and now it work just fine.

Nothing has worked on this issue for me. I've tried everything short of a device wipe / reset. I think I saw a Sprint rep on the Sprint forum that said they are looking into it.. but who knows.

I just spent about an hour on the phone with HTC tech support regarding this issue. The issue has now been officially reported and documented. I was told this the first step in getting the issue resolved. I have a temporary fix that works flawlessly on my phone. I put a small piece of scotch tape over the microphone and it works better then before the update. I’m sure it sounds strange but give it a try.

Has anyone tried tapping "Voice Search" and saying "Send text to <name> ... <message>"? Both this command and the "send email" will not fill in the "to" name field. They both bring up the text message app or the email app correctly though. The name and anything you say after it, all goes into the message area in both of these commands. Seems a bug, unless its just my E3d. The Voice Actions demo video and help says you should be able to do this.

I can verify that this is a 2.3 issue, not a hardware issue. My wife and I purchased our phones one month ago. My wife's phone came with 2.3 and mine had 2.2 on it. My wife kept complaining that her phone didn't work very well at all, especially voice recognition and her bluetooth earpiece. Every time I tested it, it worked fine. But, I never tested with background noise. As usual, I suspected she was simply technologically challeneged. Finally, I tested with background noise, and ooops, she was right, it didn't work. The little microphone picture stopped flashing when you talked to it. I suspect they have some noise cancelling software that instead was cancelling everything.

I rooted our phones, and made a backup of my phone and copied it to her xd card. Then "restored" her phone using my backup. Then I had to reset her phone to factory settings (not factory rom) to get rid of my personal info. Now the phone works perfectly. Prior to that I had tried a factory reset of the rom (which of course just reinstalled 2.3) and changed every setting the phone had that had anything to do with sound. This included the above recommendations. And putting my thumb over the mic helped, but that is a POS solution.

So, my recommendation is. Root your phone and find a friend with 2.2 willing to let you copy it. Or maybe it can be downloaded from somewhere. And two, once you get your phone working like you want, create a backup. I even copied my backup to my PC so if something physically happens to the phone, I can get a new one back to this exact setup. After having an iPhone, I have to say, being able to create the equivalent of an image of your hard drive, is so superior. It scared me to death when I did iphone updates, there was never any way to go backwards and good old Steve Jobs would randomly deleat features without telling you! With this, an update can be undone in 10 minutes.

I do appreciate this forum. It is what guided me through the rooting process and it is this thread that gave me the confidence to take on the task of reverting my wife's phone to 2.2.

I hate to have to call BS, but a few things you claim to have done are impossible: rooting an EVO that came with 2.3, "backing up" your phone and restoring it to hers and performing a "factory reset" of a 2.3 phone.

Please don't make up things and then post them on the forum. It will only serve to confuse those new to these things and good advice will get drowned out in the noise of bad advice.

Thanks!

Darn, I Googled the problem I was having on 2.3, while driving in the car I always used voice commands, now on 2.3 not working while driving. When I am at home, it works fine. I always have my AC cranked up in the car, so it's just ambient noise that's stopping it. Works fine in a quiet place.

Thanks for the work around, I'll have to give it a try. I was screaming at my phone all the way home with no help!!

Not made up at all. It may be that I rooted the phone and then it was updated to 2.3 by sprint ota. My wife was complaining prior to my rooting the phone but when I originally rooted it about 1 week after I bought it, it was not for the purpose of fixing the problem but rather to install tether. I do not recall what OS was on it at that time. I didn't update it to 2.3 so I assumed it came that way, but I suppose my wife could have clicked through allowing some auto update, but she denies it and I never got any pushed update to my phone. I have not looked to see if 2.3 is rootable, so if it is not, then it must have been an ota update after the root.

If 2.3 isn't currently rootable, I am sure that it will be soon.

But, it is absolutely 100% for sure that you can create an image of a rooted phone and install it on another rooted evo 4g and factory reset it. ROM manager does it for you with virtually no effort. The whole process took only about 10 or 15 minutes.

After I did the recovery process loading my 2.2 onto my wifes phone, my wife's phone was an exact copy of mine. All of the apps, the configurations, everything. The problem, of course, was that it was linked to my gmail account and the only way to get rid of that was to do a reset which wiped all of the apps off as well. However, it was still the same OS from my phone. After about half an hour I had all of my wife's apps back on and had all of her settings back to what she wanted.

Having the same problems and so is many others it appears judging by the view count of this thread.

Not sure why the mic got changed in this last update. It was working perfectly before. Is there a way of changing the module or service back to the 2.2 version or whatever is tied into making the mic work?

I've the same problem. Speech to text doesn't work in loud environments or when the car is moving at all. It used to work in bars with music blasting and people yelling in the background. All the iPhoners were drooling and jealous. Google / HTC: WTF did you do??! All other instances it works. If I would have known this would happen, I'd have never updated.

Unfortunately, in the haste to give an improved user experience, google & htc & spcs messed up a few functionalities that didn't need improving.

I confirmed that 2.3 is not as of yet rootable. So, my wifes phone must have been updated by her after I rooted it.

If you have access to an evo 4g that is still running 2.2, I recommend you root it and create a backup of the phone and save it to a separate computer. When 2.3 root becomes available you can restore that image to your phone and get back to the good old days when your phone worked.

In my opinion, it is a great idea to keep a backup of a good system configuration as insurance no matter what. I do this with all of my pc's as well and I don't store them offsite (or at least not on that computer).

Just a note there, if you used unrEvoked, then your phone is rooted, no matter what update you install. please go to the official unrEvoked.com website to learn more about the process. There is a reason why it is called unrEvoked Forever (fyi it is an s-off/s-on tool and works both ways). It takes less time than it did to do your backup and is permanent.

So, while you might not be able to root a 2.3 factory fresh Evo, you can root an Evo and then install the OTA to 2.3 and still be rooted. It is based off the Baseband version, not the OS version.

direct from the unrevoked website:
unrevoked forever is a tool to set your Android phone's security level to S-OFF. The security level is a flag stored on the radio; when the flag is S-OFF, the bootloader (HBOOT) will no longer check the signatures of firmware images before flashing them. This allows custom firmware images to be uploaded, including unsigned boot, recovery, splash1, and hboot images (as well as official images that have been modified). When the system is S-OFF, the NAND flash memory protection is also reduced; this allows all partitions (including /system) to be written to while the operating system is booted.

The most substantial benefit of unrevoked forever is that the change is stored in the radio's NV memory; no ENG bootloader is necessary to continue to flash firmware images. Even if an “unrootable” OTA update is accepted, a device on which unrevoked forever has been run will still be able to reflash a custom recovery image.
