Default All apps not recognizing photos, but photos stored properly in dcim

Hello, gang. Problem!

At some point yesterday, I used my camera to take pictures and for the first time since owning my Evo, the camera kept force closing. I used my task killer, tried again. No go. I turned off the phone, turned it on and it was still having problems. I finally pulled the battery and now camera works. New problem: camera, gallery, vignette app, say cheese app, just pictures app - none of them can access my albums. If I look in Astro, all pictures are in my dcim folder on my sd card and they appear fine. I downloaded the SDrescan app, and it detected no problems. I then transferred all contents of my sd card to my PC, formatted the SD card, remounted it - and still the gallery, etc., detects no photos, even those taken immediately.

I use my photo albums feature a lot. I do not want to reset my phone. I have read several forums where resetting has made no change.

I have also tried to clear the cache, clear data, searched for .nomedia files in the dcim or download folders. I have done the clear cache/date in both the media app and the gallery app. Sometimes, if I try too frequently - opening the gallery over and over in the hopes that it will be different the next time (because that NEVER happens), I get the process.android.media force close message.

I have no rooted my phone and do not want to. I just need to know what is happening. Though the camera problem happened yesterday, I vaguely recall having issues the day prior to that as well (I received five text messages but never got them until I had restarted my phone several hours later). In fact, I'm positive I've had to pull my battery several times in the last few days to keep the phone from freezing.

Apps recently downloaded that I wonder could be causing problems, but searching has not proven so: Manilla, Evernote, Dolphin HD, Cozi, update to gReader. And oh yes! Today, my phone was trying to automatically update a bunch of apps from the market, but they were all stuck in "starting download" cycle and never updated. Some I did manually, the rest I cancelled.

One last thing: the only thing I've done differently with my camera is this week - I started using the "switch camera" feature (so the front-facing camera can take the photo rather than the back). The first time I used it was about when I ran into issues.

I do use Advanced Task Killer, and I do use it frequently. Also, I did a PRL update and checked for other updates to see if it would help. I already can't remember what updates I had and which ones I did not.

I have no idea if any of this is related, but I'm doing what I do at the doctor's office: offer offer offer.

Any thoughts? Heard anything in the grapevine? Can you help?

I appreciate it and will answer any and all questions!

I bit the bullet and did a hard reset. I realized problems were too great when I went into to do a software update (the Sprint website had announced one on 10/25, but I didn't have it. I remembered seeing a message on my phone and at the same time, the phone falling off my lap, the fumble to get it back and the message disappearing). When I tried to do the software update just a few minutes ago, I kept getting a process.android.media error message. So I exported all phone contacts to my SD card and did the reset. What a pain in the arse! I'll update if the problem continues to persist, but so far, the gallery is working again and all my photos are showing up (but it has only been one entire minute - pride goeth before the fall!)

I'll update in a day or two to report on any other happenings.
