Question Physical Buttons not (Always) Working

I have in my hands an EVO 4G that is having some strange issues.

When I put the battery in, the phone turns itself on.

When the (stock, no root) system loads, the power/lock button will not lock/unlock the screen. But the volume buttons work properly.

When I put the battery in and hold vol down, it does bring me to recovery options. At this point the power button still does not work, but neither do the volume buttons.

Also seems to be strangeness with the accelerometer. When held vertically, if the app/screen has the ability to turn sideways, it will.

Any thoughts on what could be going on here? Is this an electrical/circuitry/hardware issue of some sort since it doesn't seem to be related to just the software?

Definitely sounds like a hard ware issue. Has the phone been exposed to some kind of heavy moisture? How long have you had the phone? May be best to contact Sprint.

No moisture that I know of and no indicators set off.
The Sprint rep didn't know what to make of it either.

edit:
*sigh* I was going to try to be subtle, but that's just going to make things complicated.

Me, being the Sprint service tech in question, have no idea what to make of it.

(I'm not sure what, if anything, somewhere, I'm violating by stating that...)

Has the stock Sense ROM and S is on.
As far as I can tell, totally stock.

Additionally, someone else brought in another one today that was rooted with diff rom on it, doing the same thing. Turns itself on when the battery is inserted, power button totally non-functional, and vol down button works to get to recovery, but cannot arrow down once there.
No signs of liquid.

Strange stuff.
