Question how do I purge old gmail messages?

I'm trying to reclaim some phone memory and I've read one thing to do is to purge old gmail messages and attachments - how do I do this?

I don't believe they give you a way to delete mulitiple messages at once. You can sit there and take the time to delete one at a time.
