Default EVO Freezing

I had my phone freeze a couple times today to the point where I had to restart.

One of the times was when I had Pandora running. Anyone else run into this?

Hi,

My froze today.. actually, not sure if it froze, but screen went blank. I plugged it into my car charger for the first time, made a call. Hung up. Then, I went to go do something and the screen just went black.

Using the car blue tooth , I was able to place a call.

Mine occasionally freezes, but if I leave it alone for a couple of minutes it usually works fine.....I'm wondering if it's the EVO itself or some nasty app I installed. If it doesn't get better I may have to do a factory reset.

Default Is the freeze problem an issue with 4G?

I wonder if it's an issue with 4G and the Evo trying to search for a 4G signal? When 4G is turned off I haven't experienced any freeze issues.... yet. I live and work in a 4G area but sometimes I'm in buildings where the 4G signal is weak.

Just talked to my mom (we both just got evos, however mine is still in the mail), and she has what sounds like this exact same problem. She lives near STL, which doesn't have 4g YET (as I understand), but has this same issue where she tries to use the phone and it won't respond.

....This was over the phone, but I think she told me the unlock screen actually came up, and she was able to touch it, but it wouldn't unlock. I'll suggest the 4g turn off (hopefully I can explain how to add the widget if it isn't there by default) and will report back any findings.

Denise, it sounds like your issue may be different than mine because when the phone freezes, I lose all functionality.

By the way, did you eventually have to take the battery out to get it going properly?

Yes, I had to take the battery out to get it working. My screen completely went black and made the call using blue tooth and the call thru the address book in the car.

I just thought I'd join a thread that talks about freezing.. wonder if I should start my own? :-)

Good luck with yours! love the phone!!

Just a question for all of you that are experiencing freezing. By chance are you using task killers?

My screen doesn't go completely blank, it just freezes. Also sometimes when I have a notification up top I can't slide the status bar down to see what it is. Maybe I should do a hard reset?

i had a few freeze and crashes.. when playing a game and try to go back to home screen, it would get stuck to the game and wont let me do anything.. i had to press the power button and do a hard reset.. i dont know if this is gonna be a occasional only or would happen often. I'll give this phone another week and if my experience wont get better, i'll probably go back to RS and get my refund..

I don't think i would return the phone because it's definitely the best phone out there for my needs.. Mine only happened once so far. I'm sure if this is a problem, we'll get an update (i hope!!)

My Evo frooze as well while using Pandora. I had a black screen, No Audio, The power light was on and I actually heard the new message beep when someone set me a Google Talk Message.
I pulled the battery and it works fine.
Other random issues include no task bar on the top of the screen, just a black line where is should be. Sprint TV locks up the phone and no keyboard letter pop-ups when using the keyboard.

I understand how to recover from those issues. I still love this phone and cant keep my hands off it.

Ya, I had to pull out my battery and restart my phone after the unlock screen froze. Hopefully I won't have to do this a lot.

To all seeing Issues with Pandora freezing. I too use Pandora a lot and have seen freezes with it. It tends to happen when the network has a hiccup. I don't think this is an OS issue though. Sometimes if you just wait it out it will fix itself or even force close. I believe its more of how Pandora is handling network lags. Most apps that require the network may cause these types of issues.

Just my .02 cents.

I think you're right. Pandora definitely makes my phone freeze. It happens when it is transitioning to another song. The screen goes blank and eventually the force close message comes up. Hopefully this gets fixed in an update!

My first freeze happened today. I had just received a text and i tried to unlock the ICE screen (ICE-In Case of Emergency has its own lock screen) then it froze in the middle of the unlock slide. The screen was completely unresponsive as well as the bottom buttons. I then hit the power button to put it to sleep, screen went black and hitting the power button again to wake it up did nothing. tried holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds to try and reboot and nothing. Finally pulled the battery, seemed to take a little longer to reboot.

Default touchscreen froze

My phone froze on me today. It woke up fine and worked for a bit, but then the touchscreen became unresponsive. I could hold down the power button to get the power off menu up, but couldn't select any of the options. I tried plugging it into the wall charger (battery was at %41), but still nothing. Then all of the sudden the phone started doing a whole bunch of things(like it was lagging and just caught up). Now it seems to be working ok, but I powered it off and left it to charge. I'm using System Panel, but no other task killer other than that, and it's not set to automatically kill anything. The temp was showing like 104F or so though (It's about 84F ambient here today)

Me and several co-workers using the EVO have been experiencing a lot of network issues with the EVO. One issue is the one being talked about here, Pandora. It appears if you skip songs, the network locks up and resets itself around the third or forth song.

Also what we've noticed is when watching Sprint TV for about 3 mins, the phone network will lock up and eventually reset itself. When it locks up and you return to the home screen, the Upload arrow is lit up.

I called Sprint on this and the rep said it could be a network issue. I have a hard time believing this because a co-worker of mine has the Hero and he is able to stream just fine.

Anyone else try the Sprint TV and having similar problems? Been trying to watch the world cup with no luck.

My Evo does magic tricks, when using Pandora if I hit the thumbs up or thumbs down Pandora ceases to exist. I can load ATK, ATM, System, or anything else, but Pandora is not running as an app, nor any services named Pandora, they are just gone.

I had my first Evo freeze 7 days ago, I was using WarDrive and the display turned off (I am pretty sure that when installed it said Wardrive prevents the phone from sleeping), when I turned the display back on (no issues to do so), there was no "slide to unlock" bar, all I had was my notification bar (could not pull down) and my wallpaper (not live). the Third time this happened (6 days ago), I received a phone call while the screen was on, with notification bar (unresponsive) and no slide to unlock. Well, the evo let me answer the call and worked fine; however when the call ended there was not change in functionality. the only thing that worked was screen off, screen on. the hold the power button for power off menu did not work, only turned the screen off when I let go, none of the 4 buttons did anything, except vibrate, the volume buttons did nothing (but did work during the call, I did not try any others while on the phone).

I had to pull the battery to do anything with the phone. This happened 6 times in 4 days 3 times when using WarDrive (exactly the same as mentioned above), the other 3 times were all different situations.

My Evo has frozen about 3 times in the past few days. It has never gotten to the point where I have to take out the battery, however. The screen and buttons will usually just freeze up for less then a minute, then after a couple of locking-and-unlockings of the screen, all is back to normal. I do have Pandora installed, but have yet to even open it.

I do (controversially) use ATK. I used it on my rooted MyTouch all the time, though, and never had a problem.

Any suggestions?

My wife's EVO has frozen twice now. No Pandora. No Task Killers.
Both times hitting the power button to try to get it to work made the screen go blank and only thing that resolved it was to remove battery.
Unfortunately, this is bringing back memories of the Windows Mobile 5.0 BSOD problems that, as far as I know, never got resolved (although I resolved it by throughing the phone away).
Hope Google/HTC do a better job fixing this issue than Microsoft did (happened on all the WM5 phones, if I remember correctly).

Exclamation Solution?

My Evo has been having a similar problem, However the freezing problem for me seems to be an escalation from the original problem of the phone simply entering a reboot loop. i have tried just about everything.... I have reset the phone to factory setting and let it sit for several hours with out installing any applications other then what is pre loaded, this did not work. I have tried removing the SD card and let it set again... Rebooted again. Now all of a sudden the phone does not reboot however it freezes and now to the point where removing the battery no longer helps for it stays on the HTC EVO 4G screen.

HERES AN ODD FACT!!!! I have taken the battery out just out of curiosity to test the voltages/amps........ i was un able to get a reading no matter where i placed my meters leads. Is this possibly a battery defect? Has anybody tried replacing the battery? I may just be seeing things at this point but the battery has some, very minor but odd bulges about it and its not overheating like some of you may know to happen before a battery does and most definitely will blow up.

I am down to the fact that by android 2.2 there is nothing from the soft ware/firmware thats causing these horrible defects in the evo(other then that which differentiates the evo from any other HTC-ANDROID phone). It is surely not the SD card for i have tested it and i do believe samsung is reliable. The battery is the very last thing that would come to most peoples minds but lets not forget thats what is supplying the phones voltage... if the phone is by chance getting the improper voltages it can demonstrate very odd behaviors. Anyone who may know a thing or two about overclocking a PC will tell you the strange things that can happen if you voltages are wrong ;D

Long story short im on Thanksgiving vacation..... Thanksgiving is tomorrow.... so hopefully friday i will be able to find a replacement battery BUT PLEASE to those who may have tried a battery replacement do let me know if that did the trick!!!! Before i waste my money

Im not sure lithium ion batteries can be tested like normal batteries.

Yes.

If your battery is bulging, turn it off IMMEDIATELY and take it to sprint. A battery should not bulge at all. That means it could explode at any minute.

Try a hard reset. If that doesnt work, take it to sprint, it could be a problem with the accelorometer or one of the other sensors.

Just a random question here...but have ANY of you gone to your settings/System updatesand update your HTC updates (may be scheduled already but that's ok), Firmware updates , PRL updates and Profile updates? Sometimes there are glitches just like your computer. Freezing is the number one glitch. If you update all these settings it catches patches in your software or those installed by your network. It alleviates a lot of issues that you folks are reporting. Case in hand:
My daughter and I both had Samsung Instinct HD's for about a year. She CONSTANTLY had freezing and force closures. Yet i never did. The only differeance between our phones was that I routinely (once every week or so) ran updates to catch all the little patches on bugs in the phone/software and network. I never experienced the issues she had. Once we reset the phone all the way back to factory settings and she routinely did these updates..her issues resolved.

Default HTC EVO touch freezes

When I installed several apps, my HTC EVO froze with a message box INPUT METHOD, EDIT TEXT. I can't input in any other app also. I found that the culprit was DROPBOX. when I uninstalled it, EVO is back to normal. This info may be useful to some of you

Had htc inspire 4g from at&t loved it. I switched to Sprint now I own the evo 4g and I really love this phone. About a week ago my phone started freezing after I take a picture. I did a hard reset to try and fix the problem thought I had fixed the problem but same thing. Sprint did a hard reset but same thing again. It doesn't do it every time I take a picture just random. Does not bother me that muchBUT it does bother me that something's wrong with my phone (hope you guys know what i mean). My 30 days are coming up. Should I Return my Evo for another Evo? don't know what to do o_O

well its what...a year or two since these issues arose..close on when the phone was released.
still no fix!
i'd get something else preferably unlocked, theres got to be some major design flaw.

its hard for me to tell what the issue is with sprint phones as they pack them with unnecessary pre-installed software (adware) that uses network bandwidth often and cannot be removed without hacking the phone, it was the same with my blackberry, great phone but maxed out with unwanted software which left it unusable. now similar issues with the evo 4g.

sprint store is gonna get a vissit from a deeply disgruntled welsh semi-geek anyday soon.

Default How to fix your HTC EVO 4G if it is freezing on start up

In order to fix your Evo if it is freezing on start up on the 4G screen or before. (Please note this will erase all info on the phone that you have previously saved. There is no way around it.)

1. Press the down sound button on the side and hold it down.
2. While holding it down tap the power button and let go of both buttons.
3. A screen will open up with some commands. Use the sound buttons to scroll down to data reset or restore phone.
4. tap the power button
5. another screen will open. restore phone will be highligted asking if you want to restore your phone. use the up arrow on the sound buttons one time.
6. Tap the power button and sit back and wait. Your phone will be unlocked and brand new in about 2 minutes.
If you have an issue doing this, call the EVO manufacturer at 1-866-449-8358. Best wishes and happy holidays. Ashahiyd@Gmail.com
