YAY, EVO has same CRAPPY build quality as Hero - Dust under glass
Light leak around front casing, dust issues....
The build quality sucks, I have dust under the glass in the upper left corner. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that HTC can't place a priority on build quality.
I traded my Hero with dust for an Evo with dust. Oh the joy.
It's really no surprise, if light escapes from the sides, why wouldn't dust enter through the same area....
Before you reply with 'I don't have dust,' make sure you examine very very closely, with a very bright light to be sure. I was the first on this forum to call attention to the Hero's dust issue, and was greatly flamed for it at first, too.
The phone's haven't even been out a week, so this issues will not be very noticeable yet (as with the Hero) but will become accepted as fact soon enough.
__________________ HTC Hero: Quite possibly the worst phone I've ever owned. HTC EVO 4G: Much better, but still, unpolished. Nexus S 4G: Customization required, dropped calls like crazy. Photon 4G: Good cell strength, still hoping for a smoother UI.
How can HTC made (and they make a lot) products expect to compete with the likes of Apple in terms of build quality if they still struggle with simple sealing issues?
...HTC should just spend a bit more on build materials. I'd gladly pay more for the EVO if it was made better.
My Iphone had lots of dust behind the screen (LOTS!) from the doc connector and speakers. I dont think it's specific to any phone, just hard to make them air tight.

Iphones get dust under the screen also. It happens to all smartphones no matter who makes it.

If I gotta search my screen with a "very bright light" just to be able to see dust under my screen, then I could care less if the shit is in there! Jesus, some of you people look for shit to bitch about!

Keep in mind when you guys open/close the battery panel, dust will be trapped and work its way into the front of the phone (under the glass). The more you open that back panel, the more dust will enter.

Really? It's so silly to me that manufacturers struggle with this. All they have to do is seal the LCD panel to the front glass...simple, really.
I guess I should ask this question: is it acceptable to have any amount of dust, at all, under the display?
My answer would be: no, absolutely not, any dust at all, is unacceptable.

It's because the phone is so new...wait 3 months or so, you'll see it plain as day, you'll get nice shadows when web browsing, try and wipe the screen and go, 'oh crap, i can't wipe that off' so yeah, I bitch early, because once you notice it, you wont be able to return/exchange it.

It's entering from the front, just like the Hero.
Looks like I'll have to make a thread on how to dis-assemble the EVO just like the Hero. Too bad HTC's instruction manual doesn't cover 'Internal cleaning procedure' lol.

MFR & iPhone = 3weeks+ run around Happens all the time. It would not be easy to seal the dust out. I have seen a few hack jobs, but in the end, they never work.
The dirt comes in through the headphone port. Take a piece of tape and cover it if you pocket the phone. The Otterbox cases are nice because they have rubber plugs for any open ports.

How about you try to manufacture something and then you can figure out the super secret way to make things PERFECT without any sort of manufacturing defect. I'll wait .
In the history of man, there has never been a product ever made without some kind of defect. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. If you're unsatisfied, then just move along.

QFT.....If its not noticeable under normal conditions, i dont give a crap.....I had a buddy who obsessed over his iphone screen....under halogen lights, he could see hairline scratches and it pissed him off......In every other light, you couldnt see them.....

trust me you don't want them doing that. It would cost a ton of money to repair the phone if it broke. You want to be able to replace the screen digitizer and LCD separately and keep cost cheap.
Guess I'm just lucky. I've had a mogul, diamond, hero & Evo, & I've never had this dust under the screen "issue" although I've never shined a really bright light on any of them either, lol.
The EVO has more holes in it that any phone I can remember. Headphone slot, back plate notch, speaker grill, power and hdmi port, ear plate, kickstand. Seriously. You expect not one speck of dust to not get in there.
I'm curious being its the glass. Do you have a screen protector on? Even though I doubt that would matter. If there is air in the room there is dust.

Since the bulk of all dust in a house or work environment is dead skin, I think the simple solution here would be to wear a giant condom when you are near your beautiful Evo phone, to prevent your skin from fouling up it's supremely awesome display.
Kidding aside, the thing that give phones dust problems the most is crapy pockets. Some pocket materials create a ton of dust/lint and others rarely any dust/lint. You could aways get pocket inserts sewn in to your favorite linty jeans, or simply get a nice dust preventing slip cover for the phone. My son started doing exectly that (slip cover) and it solved his screen dust issues.
my only HTC phone so far was a Diamond, year+ of use, of my 1, now 2 year old son trying to eat it and play with it....and no dust under the screen. no screen protector, no case, no skin, nothing. hope my Evo turns out the same way *taptaptap awaits Best Buy call*
I'm pretty pissed that my Evo had dust inside the screen after less than a week. I hated that about the Hero and now the Evo is doing it. It is very, very annoying. I can't believe they can't seal the damned LCD to the glass. So annoying.
This is sad. I went through 3 hero's with dust problems where it would look like there were burnt out pixels on the display. Really HTC? Is it that hard to seal glass to an lcd? And it's not because the phone has ports and dust gets in. It's a manufacturing defect where HTC doesn't seal the glass to the lcd. I've had more phones than I can count over the years from blackberries to iphones to my current samsung moment and never had dust under the glass until I bought the hero. I had previous HTC phones as well: the diamond, the original touch and never a spec of dust. This coupled with the screen inconsistency and grounding issues makes me never want to buy another HTC phone again. They want you to pay $199 for the phone, $450 out of contract, increase the price of your bill $10/month, and you have to deal with problems like these. These devices should be mint and built to last. I'm in disbelief.
When Sprint announced their first ever 4G handset at CTIA in March 2010, they dropped a bombshell on the mobile world. The HTC Evo 4G is a device that introduces a lot of firsts when compared to other North American handsets. This is the first Andr... Read More
