[XDA][Root] ACS HTC Super Tool v3 by frigid
DO NOT INSTALL THE UPDATE RELEASED 01/19/2012 OR YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT USING THIS METHOD
Nestled in the recesses of XDA I found a root tool for this phone. I haven't tried it yet as I'm still on 14-day return probation. The tool appears to be fully functional. Note that unlocking the bootloader can be tracked and wipes your phone, but it appears that so far no one has had a problem giving the phone back to Sprint with it unlocked or relocked. Unlocking the bootloader is **NOT** necessary for this root method and there are no ROMS as of yet. This is a PC/Win root and cannot be done via Mac or the phone. The dev is working on a multi-platform version.
I will try to find out some more info and bring it over from there as I do. or if anyone is gonna try, let us know how it goes. There's no step by step in the thread itself like some of us are accustomed to here.
2) Download the HTC USB Drivers. You can skip this step if you already have HTC Sync installed (v3.0.5606 w/ USB Driver v3.0.0.17 or later), just exit the tray monitoring app.
3a) For less headaches, make sure you're running Software v1.19.651.1 released 11/03/2011 or older. Software v2.12.651.5 released 01/19/2012 cannot be rooted with this tool.
3b) Connect in Charge mode and of course, make sure USB Debugging is enabled.
4) Fully extract the archive and run SuperTool.exe - It launches IE to the creator's homepage which is normal.
5) Choose Option 1/Prep phone with ZergRush. It should complete in a few moments prompting you as necessary. If you do not see a message prompting Zerglings attacking your phone, there is an error in steps 2-4.
6) Choose Option 3/Perm Root and you're all done!
-- If you do not see Super User installed, a reboot should make it visible.
-- If you plan to install WiFi Tether exploit, enabling Routing Fix in this app's settings will help get it working.
-- De-Sensing and Re-Sensing are options also available. At last read through, this still had some issues re-sensing so try this only if you really want to. Note that this will disable the Gallery.

I actually just finished rooting without a hitch. If I had thought about it, I would've taken screencaps along the way to help others here. Takes all of 4 (major) steps depending on your current setup.
1) Download Super Tool v3
2) Download the HTC USB Drivers. You can skip this step if you already have HTC Sync installed and updated (3.0.5606 w/ USB Driver v3.0.0.17), just exit the tray monitoring app.
3a) For less headaches, make sure you've already updated to the latest firmware via the internal update tool: Software version 1.19.651.1 released 11/03
3b) Connect in Charge mode and of course, make sure USB Debugging is enabled.
4) Fully extract the archive and run SuperTool.exe - It launches IE to the creator's homepage which is normal.
5) Choose Option 1/Prep phone with ZergRush. It should complete without any hitches and return to the main menu.
6) Choose Option 3/Perm Root and it should complete without any hitches as well.
-- If you do not see Super User installed, a reboot should make it visible.
-- If you plan to install WiFi Tether exploit, enabling Routing Fix in this app's settings will help get it working.
I tried your 6 steps on my HTC EVO (first model). All of them were OK until the step 6. I got the following error messages

This rooting is only confirmed for the EVO Design 4G. For the original EVO 4G, see the original EVO forums. The rooting methods are not interchangeable.

The MultiUpload link is for the stock ROM. The SuperTool link is on the XDA site. I will put a copy of the link here as well.
Just want to say thanks for the excellent tips and info on this model phone.
I was able to root my Evo Design 4G by reading and following the info posted in here. Recently, there was this update that insisted to be installed. I turned off my wi-fi on the phone and told the update to install when wi-fi was available. It would just not go away the phone started running and freezing for no reason. I restarted a couple times and it seemed to be working ok. Then I noticed on my tasks that the download had completed and installed.
When trying to use my wi-fi tether I noticed that my device seems to have become un-rooted.
Is there anything I can do to roll-back or uninstall this recent HTC update???

At the moment there's no known way to roll back. I don't even think the stock ROM will install over an update. A method to root with an unlocked bootloader has been found but I'm still trying to decipher the steps to properly share them here. That method works post update. Some people are not fans of unlocking because it can be tracked.

So my bro installed the update and is no longer rooted. Boot loader is already unlocked and cwm installed. Are the steps you mentioned in the original xda thread or a new one?

They are mentioned in the original XDA thread near the end and also link to a custom CWM build for the Kingdom (ED4G/Hero S). Since CWM was installed, that means he's already done a custom recovery. That's half the work right there.

Your best bet is to ask in the Sensation forums. This info is for the ED4G only.

Super user didn't appear in your apps list? Are you sure the Zerglings rushed the phone in Step 1 to prep it?
hi, now after i tried several times superuser appeared but if i open it a message will say : there is error, i restart the htc >>>> superuser disappeared
any idea?
thanks

Actually, it is for the EVO Design - not the EVO 4g.
In case of borking, here's the stock ROM/RUU: RUU_Kingdom_Sprint_WWE_1.19.651.0_Radio_1.11.00.08 12_NV_NV_SPCS_2.60_0708_PRL51079_release_209668_si gned.exe (355.26 MB) @ Multiupload.com
Hmm I was thinking the same thing myself. I am not brave enough to test it. Looking at the dates of these post I would say no they look like there for the Sprint version which ran on gingerbread, our phones run with ICS. Maybe the moderator of this section can either create a section for Boost Mobile users so we dont get confused.
I doubt it considering darnell said it won't work on updates past 01/19/2012 which the boost evo design didn't even come out until last week lol so i assume is well past that update especially when from what i read the sprint design doesn't come stock with sense 3.6 and ics 4.0.3 yet like the boost one does so not even the same.

Check out my post in the other thread...Ive tried...no luck...didnt harm the phone for trying. Will try other methods and post any progress that i get.
Have an Evo Design, tried rooting it withe Super Tool v3 and after reading this whole thread now know why it didnt work...... AFTER I went thru the trouble of unlocking it..... Now my question is what do I have to do to root this phone..... Help Anybody.... Thanks in advance....
The root via USB exploits don't currently work on the Hero S/Design 4G as off the latest updates. It also won't work with the Boost version of the phone since it comes with the post January update out of the box.
Currently the best way to root is through CWM. I posted a reply to a similar question here that should help you:

I was going to mention that the link didn't work. However, I wanted it to remove all the sense stuff. Does anyone know what is safe to remove? I've cleaned out almost everything.
And I heard there was a mod for a stock status bar. Anyone know about that?

The one that has given me problems is the com.HTC framework res file . I have learned to live with it. The phone app will be a problem too as it is tied into a lot of the framework file. Everything else is okay to get rid of after the Rom is installed.

It's not found because it's not used anymore. If you read the first post, it's about 7 months outdated. No phones are shipped with the original ROM anymore and few are holding on to it. The bootloader must be unlocked to obtain root these days.
All thanks goes to frigid of XDA. Support him if you can as he is pretty much the only dev working on rooting the Design on any forum.
frigid created a script that uses jcase's tacoroot frigid himself didnt root anyone he just compiled the work of everyone else into a script. which is why when things stopped working he stopped supporting this tool.
