Does anyone have a link to the PH44IMG.zip file? I don't want to install a custom recovery or a ROM or anything like that -- not yet, anyway. I just want root access so I can use all my root apps to clean up the phone a bit (it's brand new). Thanks!!!

[ edit ]
Never mind. I searched for it on Google and found it. Or at least I found what appears to be the proper file. If my phone explodes I'll let you guys know. lol.

[ edit2 ]
Well, it didn't work, for some reason. But I found Apache Thunder's thread on here and I'm downloading the files now. I'm guessing they'll work.

Anyone know why the HTC update keeps failing with root? Just a curious question.

I have finished step 4 of HTCdev's unlocking instructions, but my computer doesn't appear to recognize my phone. It shows up in device manager as "Unknown Device" and an error message pops up saying "USB Device Not Recognized" every time I plug it in. HTC Sync doesn't even recognize it. When I try to execute the command in step 8 (fastboot oem get_identifier_token), I see "Waiting for Device" and it never gives me an identifier token.

I have enabled debugging mode and I tried both "HTC Sync" and "Disk Drive" in the Connect to PC settings.

Help?

In my experience that problem is usually caused by a defective USB cable, and sometimes a defective USB port on the computer. (Of course bad drivers and various other things can also cause this type of problem but I mostly run across it being the cable.) Try other USB ports on the computer and maybe another computer, if that doesn't help try to obtain another USB cable; preferably one that is known to work with transferring data.

Apparently my Evo Design 4G isn't fully compatible with T-Mobile's network, so maybe all this work is pointless. But I ordered a new cable anyway. We'll see if it makes a difference. I'll be back in a couple of days with an update. Thanks for the suggestion.

For some background: I was a Sprint customer for years, until I heard about T-Mobile's $30/month unlimited data/text + 100 minutes plan. (I was essentially paying $55/month for the same thing, except I got no 4G and I was getting hundreds of extra minutes that I would never use.) I contacted T-Mobile's customer support and asked if I could use my Sprint phone or if I would need to buy a new one. They looked up the serial number and told me that the phone was already unlocked and there would be no problem. So I cancelled my Sprint account and transferred my number, only to find out that my phone was actually still locked by Sprint. So until I either go back to Sprint, unlock my Evo, or buy a legit T-Mobile phone, I'm stuck with no service at all. I went to the T-Mobile store today and asked for a free phone to replace the one that I bricked by following their customer service rep's advice. They basically told me to pound salt. In fact, they said that my phone wouldn't work on their 4G network even if I could unlock it. That's what I mean by pointless.

Update: I got a new cord. After plugging and unplugging several times, I finally got it to work. My phone is unlocked now, but I still have no service. Whenever I try to make a call, I hear "Your account cannot be validated."

Before I closed my account with Sprint, T-Mobile looked up my phone's serial number and told me that my phone was already unlocked and compatible with their network. After I transferred my number, they said I would have full access to their network, including 4G, 24 hours after activating my SIM card. Finally, after realizing that my phone was actually still locked, they said I would have talk and text with slow sub-4G Internet speeds after I unlocked it. All of that has turned out to be false. I'm seriously at a loss now. I guess I'll drag myself to Sprint and hope they take me back. This whole unlocking business has been a complete waste of time. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Yes, I did. I have popped the battery out, reseated the SIM card, and rebooted several times too.

Also, when I go into the About Phone > Network menu, it says "Operator Name: Sprint". Maybe I need to change something in my settings?

I believe you would need to call Sprint and get them to guide you in unlocking the carrier on the phone. The HTC EVO Design 4G is a world phone and thus supports pretty much any network; however, in the U.S. it is locked to using Sprint's CDMA network. Rooting and unlocking the boot-loader are not the same as unlocking the carrier/radio.

You can however try this and see if it'll work:
Open Settings and go to "Call." In there tap "Preferred Network" and change it to "GSM/UMTS Mode." If it prompts you on whether to do GSM or UMTS, select GSM. (Although, UMTS might work.)

I had once put a T-Mobile card in mine (albeit T-Mobile prepaid) and the phone didn't complain about it being in the U.S. but couldn't read the SIM Card for some reason.

The reason they say T-Mobile's 4G won't work with this phone is that Sprint uses WiMax for 4G and T-Mobile uses HSPA+.

If you manage to find a way to get them to do it, let us know EXACTLY what you said and who you talked to. I literally tried to do this today and they told me they would not (not could not, WOULD NOT). **** Sprint, and I hate this piece of shit phone.

Oh wow... I have the Boost Mobile version of the phone which has the Preferred Network setting. I wouldn't have ever imagined that not being in the Sprint version of the phone, that is quite interesting. In that case I'm not sure what to tell you as I'm not sure of any other place in the settings to tell the phone to use a different network by default. Your only option may very well be to somehow convince Sprint to not only let you unlock the phone from them, but guide you in doing so. Which from the post after yours, quoted below, it doesn't seem like they will. Although, depending on how long you were with them, they may be willing to. I know that T-Mobile allows customers who have had their service for 2 years(the contract terms) to unlock the phone for free, but I'm unsure of Sprint's policy on it.

I'm really sorry to hear that. All of the carriers do this, but it's quite ridiculous of the companies to lock the phones to only their network. Customers should want to use them because of their prices and service, not because of their phones! If you were with them for a while, you may want to try what I said above and see if they'll do it since you were a loyal customer for a decent amount of time.

Well, the phone is supposed to be locked to CDMA while in the United States. Only foreign SIM cards are supposed to be usable. In example, if I select "Preferred Network" and then "GSM/UMTS Mode" it gives me a pop-up window that says "GSM/UMTS Mode not supported in the U.S. Only foreign SIM card usable in device. Your device will switch to CDMA mode now."
Oddly when I put a Prepaid T-Mobile SIM card into the phone and selected that, it wouldn't tell me that and did indeed switch; however for some reason, maybe the locking or maybe as it was for a prepaid T-Mobile phone's SIM card, couldn't read the card properly.

With this said, and again stressing everything says that only foreign SIM cards are supported by default, I don't think anything less of getting Sprint to unlock it will help. Especially since unlocking the boot-loader and/or rooting are unrelated to unlocking the carrier lock.

k extract the files you downloaded( adb.exe AdbWinApi.dll fastboot.exe) in a new folder named android on your c drive

than run the
SDK Manager.exe when its done loading install "android sdk platform tools" and "android sdk tools"

have you done that yet?
