Question Porting my Sprint # over to Boost?

I have a Evo Shift that is already flashed over to Boost Mobile. I called to activate the phone and get my Sprint phone # ported over to my new Boost account. They said they could but if I had any outstanding balances on Sprint, it could interrupt my Boost account.

If I don't pay my Sprint account and it goes into collections, will it mess up my Boost account?

Should I get a new number or can will it be okay to port over my same number?

Most cases, accounts have to be in good standing to be able to activate it on another number or carrier. Meaning no past due and not on a negative list.
