Exclamation HTC Sense Crash / Loading Issue

Hello Everyone, I guess ever since May or June I've been having an issue with HTC Sense loading or restarting after running various applications. Unforunately I'm one of the thousands with an HTC phone suffering from the HTC Sense crashing and loading issue. For no particular reason that I can think of, HTC sense CONSTANTLY crashes randomly. I don't know what to do I've browsed so many websites, and I've tried to come to a conclusion but I simply can't.

The phone is awesome and I love HTC Sense but its annoying how it keeps on crashing and its kinda annoying because if I need to make a call I have to wait until it loads just to do it and it takes 45 - 50 seconds to start up all over again.

I've installed an application called "SeePU" that tells me how much memory is being used, I noticed that the memory "frees up" when the crash occurs its as if something is causing the HTC Sense to crash but I don't know what it is. Any ideas? My phone is NOT rooted, and I've performed backups and did factory resets at least 3 times its really annoying to have to reset it again.

I also deleted the HTC Sense data and rebuilt my theme from scratch to no avail. Any tips or suggestions? Is there any hacks out there that can fix this problem?

Much Appreciated,
Vlad

Well at this point after browsing many threads on this forum, seems like there really is no concrete solution to this problem...

It really is a shame that no one has found a solution to this yet. Mine started doing it about 4 weeks ago and I followed the suggestiong of reseting HTC sense (clearing cached data etc) and although this temporarily fixes the problem (as does a re-boot), it still comes back later.

Interestingly it can also cure itself sometimes.

Maybe it's a particular app that we have all downloaded that is causing it? One of the biggest games I've been playing so far is Paradise Island, anyone else with this problem playing it?

No, I haven't played that game. But I am still having the same problem... it becomes VERY frustrating, as it does it quite frequently.

I never rooted my phone (paranoid I'll screw it up) but once 2.3 came out & sense started the reboot issue, I switched over to go launcher instead. Was only supposed to be until they fixed sense, but its been so long & I actually have grown to really like it, their themes, widgets, etc. So another fix could be maybe skipping sense all together? At least until its fixed? (Whenever that might be...)

After uninstalling an app called crackle, the problem seems to have disappeared. Anyone else with this app installed?

No I dont' have it installed, I tried freeing up some space on my phone but that doesn't seem to do anything nor solve the problem. I was thinking of going ahead and rooting the phone to see if there is something out there that could end the problem. I'm wondering if there is a rooted fix to this problem...

Well, I don't have the loading issue and I am rooted, running a custom rom. That being said, Android 2.3 on the shift cannot be permanently rooted at this point, so I don't think that is going to help you. But, as I have posted in another thread, and not gotten a concrete response on, try a different launcher like the poster above. Maybe Launcher pro or go launcher or something similar. I bet it will help.

Hey there quaay. We have similar phones, but I'm not sure it is the same issue. Maybe you could ask in the forum for your phone, they may have a fix for you over there.

Other than that, I would try just using the back button instead of home. It will close out the app and save your battery a little bit as well.

Here is the link to the Desire Z forum HTC Desire Z - Android Forums

Also, I'm going to move this post once I know you've seen what I posted for you...

I might be wrong here, but I doubt that it's a personally downloaded app that's causing this problem. Too many people, with different combinations of apps, are having this problem for it to be attributed to a market app.

I have come to the conclusion that it is a memory leak type problem. Certain apps cause it, but they are not mutually exclusive. Some apps seem to do it for some people, while the same apps don't for other folks. It is definitely a memory management problem with the update. Hopefully they can get it sorted soon, I know there are a lot of folks who are plenty ticked about it....

There is quite a discussion on this issue on the Sprint Support Forum. Know issue with HTC Sense on lots of phones and the new memory handler in GB. So far no word on when a fix will happen. see Sprint Community: HTC Sense Issue Consolidation Thread?

This spot on, HTC Sense seems to be culprit. I just installed "LauncherPro" and "HomeSwitcher for Froyo" and no more HTC screen of death.
Sucks since Sense is main component, at least for me,.which separates HTC from the rest.

Gah, the problem is even WORSE at the moment. Sense now resets EVERY time. It's so damn annoying.

Yeah I'm just gonna get launcher pro and stick with it. Honestly I don't Kline it at all and I think sense is simply way better but the crashing is really annoying and it sucks because to make a call I have to wait 35-40 seconds for the app to reload. Sprint has got to get to the bottom of this already, it's been like 6 months with this ridiculous problem.

And unfortunately since I updated to Android 2.33 there really is no root out there for it... At least for the EVO Shift...

Does using Launcher Pro remove Sense, or just over ride it?

Can Launcher Pro be installed to the SD card?

If perm root for the shift ever becomes available, I'm wanting to remove Sense and bloatware and go to stock Android. Right now my app storage space is so low that I have to delete all the data on the Internet browser every couple of days, just so I can update my existing apps. Really don't want to install any new apps right now if I don't have to. The "app storage low" icon on the top notification bar is becoming a permanent fixture on my phone...

Launcher pro runs over top of sense.

I can't exactly remember, but I'm almost positive that it cannot be run from sd.

If and when permanent root becomes available, you can load a stock android rom to your shift if you want to remove sense. It may free up some space for you to run additional apps. There are numerous different roms that are AOSP (stock android) to choose from. I am not too familiar with them, as I run sense. In the past I have used cyanogenmod, also known as CM x.x. The CM roms are usually very well supported by devs and updated very often.

Have you installed all the apps possible to sd to help with the low internal storage issue you have?

And also, I just read in another thread that a bad esn shift was donated to a dev in order to be able to find root for this pita.... lol

(thanks to Crump for that info)

It seems to have something to do with Sense and accessing the SD card. At least for me, that's the pattern I've noticed. Anyway, using LauncherPro (making it default, of course) stopped the issue. No Sense = no loading screen of death.

I finally caved in and installed GO Launcher EX. I am a HUGE fan of HTC Sense UI but I've come to the conclusion that Sense UI was causing all the re-boots. Ever since I have installed GO Launcher EX, I have yet to have a re-boot of the UI. GO Launcher Ex is completely customizable, almost to the extent that you can me it almost look like HTC sense. The only thing I do not have is the Friend Stream widget but I can use a twitter and facebook widget. You can also add and subtract screens. I'm an original webOS guy and I like to tweak so this new UI is very cool. And fast.

It's a nice stop gap until there is an update for the Sense UI re-boot issue.

I have Evo Shift and have been having similar problem. My phone just turns off though and I have to restart. I've done factory reset and today they took software off and put it back on again. As I was downloading my Apps again, the phone crashed while doing nothing. Then, as it was restarting, it died again. Taking it back to get a "replacement" tomorrow.

I don't have any of the apps listed in this thread, but I think this silly game called Dungeon Quest might be the answer. Problem is I really like playing the game and don't want to quit.

I got a new Evo Shift from the Sprint store and it made it through whole day without issue. The one I turned in was crashing on restarts.

Yes everything I can possibly move to SD card already is. I have to go into manage apps every couple of days and delete all the data for the web browser, that gets rid of 3-4 megs and gets me by for a little while.

I'm gonna root the phone tonight. But before I do so is it gonna really make a difference? I would like to root the phone and keep it with the Cyanogenmod as well.. Is it possible to keep HTC Sense with the Cyanogen Mod installed?

No Vlad. CM is aosp android, or stock android, without sense. There are roms you can use that have sense without the loading issue. I am running one as we speak...

There is a fix for the Sense rebooting problem.. it takes a minimal amount of effort, but it can be done. I was about to throw my EVO Shift out the window until I found this, and I have not had an issue since.

My phone has been rooted since the day I got it back in June, and ever since I upgraded to Gingerbread (rooted), I've had this problem, but I just dealt with it even though it is entirely annoying. Finally, I come to try to fix this problem in October and I see this thread. It worked! Oh my gosh this made my Saturday, maybe even my week. I love Sense and it's one of the reasons I picked this phone over the Epic, so I'm glad I can keep using it without getting that damn loading screen. Thank you so much, everyone should know about this and furthermore, HTC should just release a fix for it! Unfortunately if you're not familiar with rooting and command prompt, it might be easier to just use another launcher.

Hi! I'm very happy someone found a fix for the Sense crashing problem.
My device is a Desire Z running android 2.3.3. Is it possible to use the same fix described here? What are the risks? I don't want to make a mess, like phone no more working or something...
Thanks!

I was having the same issue for my wife's phone and read somewhere the issue dealt with having less that 100MB of internal memory left available. I downloaded an App called something like PhonetoSD (can't remember exact name) and it allowed me to move a bunch of apps that were saved on the Phone's internal to the SD card. This freed up some memory and she now has about 150MB free on the internal memory.

After I did that I rebooted the phone and the loading when exiting an App issue disappeared.

This freed up some memory and she now has about 150MB free on the internal memory.

After I did that I rebooted the phone and the loading when exiting an App issue disappeared.
u sure it works? what do u mean by internal?ram?

Thought I should come back and report. Her crashing stopped for a day and then came back so apparently that wasn't the solution...

Honestly guys, it's just Sense. Not the memory card, not a leak, not a hardware memory issue, not being low on space. It's just Sense turning to crap upon gingerbread and Sprint is eating pie. Can't fix or won't fix, who knows. I've done and tested and played and edited. My personal conclusion is that Sense has issues with accessing data on SD, but again, that's not a card issue, you can buy 28937289 different sizes or bands, and it's just gonna be Sense each time. Just use another launcher. You can even make those launchers look and act like Sense if you like it that much. Save yourself some time and aggravation. Because apparently Sprint isn't going to fix this if they haven't by now.

Cheers!

PS if any of you were having issues with NoLock no longer working, that's Sense too. Works fine for me now using other launchers.

I would have to agree with girlinblue. I recently flashed an aosp rom, and have not had one loading screen pop up since. I was running a custom sense rom before, based on the sprint gingerbread build. It was a very rare occurrence, but occasionally it would still get the loading spinning wheel deal. Sucks that this phone is a little beast, but has become the red headed step child of late....

I'm going to try switching to a different launcher to see if it solves the problem. Do people recommend LauncherPro or something else? To actually switch would I just download and install the other launcher or is there something else that I must do?

Just download & install " Launcher Pro." It will eliminate the " loading screen issues." I just don't care for " LP" and would rather deal with the annoying BS " loading" screen Sense offers.

ADW is another launcher... I like it. works really well, and is completely customizable. Maybe LP is also, I haven't used it in a long time and don't remember.

I'm not sure why everyone is still complaining about this issue - a solution was posted above! I did the temp root and modified the memory settings for the home screen per the instructions, and I've not seen the HTC Loading screen for a full month. Go do it. Now.

Having the same issue....people are telling me to get an Evo 4g as a replacement. Do you guys think it will fix the problem? I was told the Evo 4g does not have the newer sense on it. I don't know, but i'm tired of waiting for HTC to fix the problem. I don't want to root my phone (as of right now), but might have to do a temp root to fix the problem.

Its been a problem for so long, and this phone (sadly) isnt top of the line in regards to sprint like updates & such (though not bad either, just not priority i feel) i.m.o, youre better off just switching to a different program instead of sense. For instance (think i mentioned it a while back in this thread, err not this one sorry, it was one of the other many threads discussing this) but i went with go launcher, it was free in the market, it has some add ons that look at like sense, and i love it. I loved sense but couldnt deal with the NONSTOP reloading. And now i dont even miss sense. And REALLY dont miss the reloading. Other have mentioned other launcher apps but i only tried go launcher after reading reviews on a few different apps and its great. I downloaded it 'until sense was fixed'. Never happened. But i dont mind. Thats probably your best bet. Good luck!

I've switched to GOlauncherEX, and haven't looked back. So call me SENSEless!
