2. I want to develop for Android. What are the basics I need to know?
Android requires knowledge of Java programming language although it allows other programming languages (C for example) to be compiled in the native code. This however is not officially supported by Google.
Make sure to checkout Android Developers forum for more tips at http://androidforums.com/a/ and/or share your experience with us.
3. What makes Android different than other platforms available?
Android is the first free and open source platform. Unlike others available, it allows third party developers or users to fully access (and modify) source code.
Core apps include an email client, SMS program, calendar, maps, browser, contacts and other. All applications are written using the Java programming language.
Also, being an open source project, Android offers developers with full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications.

Android is an operating system developed by Google Inc. for use on mobile devices (read: "smart" cell-phones). It works in conjunction with a users gmail account to provide the traditional functions of a PDA. The users PDA data, (particularly contacts) which is useful for cell-phone usage, is maintained online, and synchronised with the android device continuously. gmail, and gmail instant messaging and voice messaging all work as critical, integral communications applications through the data functions of the cell-phone.
Android provides a GUI (Graphical User Interface) as an integral part of the OS, like Apple originally did and Microsoft did beginning with Windows 2000. Android's choice of data transfer / storage devices is ROM for boot, and internet for operation / update / data transfer.
Android is an alternative to iPhone, Palm OS, and Palm WEB-OS, Windows Mobile, and RIM Blackberry devices.
Android is apparently vegetarian, as it primarily eats apples, blackberries and plams.

Q: What is Android?
A. In a word, Linux. More specifically: "A Linux-based open source platform for mobile cellular handsets. Android was developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), a coalition of hardware, software and telecommunications companies oriented towards advancing mobile telephony standards."
A general question to me is: which features are hardware related, which are OS related, and which are carrier add-ons?
Some features are obvious- dual mics to eliminate background noise very cool hardware. LED flashes single or dual - very cool hardware.
Voice recognition, speech type, email synch, email program, etc - are these part of the OS or part of Tmobile, Verizon, or Sprint, or are they hardware dependent too?
Just curious. My choices are based on the apps I need, the service provider with coverage where I live, and the service plan costs.
Sprint has the best coverage and price plans where we live, but does not have a Google Nav on it's Androids that run 1.5. So it is another while with the Treo 755.

I recently purchased a HTC droid Incredible from Verizon. About two weeks ago, I made a trip to oversea and I got a shock of my life when I saw the Verizon bill. Vrizon charged me over $1,800.00 for data usage. I am not sure how that can happen. I was very careful to not doenload any data while visiting oversea. My question is does droid phone automatically download data on background if the phone is turned on even if I am not openning any web? Can anyone help me with this info so I can settle it with Verizon? Thanks
Device(s): iPhone 3GS -> (NO LONGER), NOW -> 2 HTC EVO'S
