1. Applications that I have downloaded from the market are no longer available. Where did they go?
Most likely, authors may have taken their apps offline if they deem them unstable or not quite ready for a mass release. Google may have also removed the app for the same reason.
(thanks to Swizz)
2. What is the easiest way to install programs that I find on the internet (not the Market)?
You can download the .apk file to your desktop PC. After this, mount the SD card to desktop and drop the .apk file in the root folder on the card. Download and install 'Apps installer' from the market. Then run 'Apps Installer' and select the .apk from the list of files.
Also, you might need to check the box next to 'unknown sources' in Settings > Applications.
(thanks to Swizz and andonnguyen)
3. Can I install applications to the SD card?
Currently, this cannot be done. An app cannot fix this as it requires root access. Therefore, this is something that needs to be changed by Google itself.

should this one perhaps be updated to note that for some phones it is possible to obtain root, and this would not strictly speaking require Google to change anything?

thanks much.
No change required ... The Question is can apps be installed to the SDcard ...
and the answer was NO >>> root is required ... and that remains the case.
The Question isn't worded as you suggest ..... "is it possible to obtain root"
the answer to that would be... Yes root can be obtained on many phones.

But your FAQ answer contradicts this response. Your FAQ response says "this is something that needs to be changed by Google," but you now imply that someone who has rooted their phone can do it without Google's intervention. Please correct your FAQ response.
How to partition your Androids SD card to install apps on it
This tutorial will take you step by step through the process of partitioning the SD card in your Android phone so that you can save (and run) applications on/from it.
The process of installing programs on your SD card – knows as Apps2SD, App2SD and A2SD – not only allows you to install many more programs on your Android phone, but it keeps internal memory free so your device runs faster.
This tutorial will show you how to partition your SD card so that you can run programs from it.

I want to use an App to store vital important info.
Several questions:
1) When the data is sync’d to Google, who has access to it? How secure is it? Am I risking identity theft?
2) When downloading apps, they state what the application will have access to. Who uses that information? If the application has the ability to “lock” the data with a password, is it still available to others?
3) If an app says it has “Full internet access” Or “access to modify/delete SD Card contents”. What does that mean?
Anyone know where the setting is on a Motorola Droid that allows me to get sound/notification if a text message is received? I get all the other notifications, but I can't figure out where the setting is for text messages. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Loaded super security onto my Nexus one yesterday. No problems. Today I go to start my phone and I am locked out. I used the same stinking password (shouldn't admit.) I always use. It asked for a confirm. Now I need a backdoor to get into the phone and maybe remove the app. Or get a new password. Or something. Tried to contact Superoids but they don't list a phone number, Address or whatever. Google/goog411 just points back at their site which doesn't list a Phone number, address...can anyone help?
how does buying apps on Android compare to buying on iOS?
for example, if i buy an app on my iPod, and then restore it, and then "buy" it again, an alert comes up saying it's been previously purchased, and that it would download for free?
basically i'm asking because since my phone is rooted, and besides using Titanium Backup, how would i go about getting a paid app again?

You must root your device to get rid of these apps
If you want to save more apps. Download appSaver first from the market. It helps you save some applications in the phone to be saved in the SD. Try it.
