Welcome to Android Forums This thread is for a general FAQ on how to use the different parts of our forums. Regardless if this is your first time on a forum or you have been a member of various forums if you need help with something about the forum we hope you can find it here. If you can't then you can contact one of our guides or moderators and they should be able to help you further or you can create a thread in our FAQ forums. Also please be sure to read over the site rules and guidelines.
Click a link below to be taken to the related post.
From here you can navigate to many of the different areas of android forums. Our forums are broken up into different sections.
The android community section has our introduction forums where new members are encouraged to introduce themselves. The lounge where you can discuss everything even if it is not android related. Our classified section where you can buy and sell used phone and other device from other members and a link to unanswered threads if you want to see what you can do to help out others who have posted a question but haven't gotten any answers yet.
If you are looking for a device in either the phone or tablet forums and can't find it then you may want to check the archived android devices section. If a forum for a specific device doesn't get any new posts after a period of time it is moved to this section you can find both phones and tablets in this section.
The other android devices area is for any devices that are not tablets or phones yet still android powered. This includes TVs and media players.
For resident developers the android development forums are available. The application development area is for general development talk. If someone is a recognized developer for custom ROMs they can also get a subforum for their releases.
The manufacturer forums is a place to discuss different android manufacturers.
The android carriers section is a place to discuss different carriers and find information about the various carriers.
Here at android forums your member status will change as you participate more as well as if you decide to support the site or are given an opportunity to work as a staff member on the forums. Here is a basic explanation of the different titles you will see from posters here.
Underneath each username in a thread there is a title. Most members will have blue usernames. The titles you will see are the following:
"New Member" any member who has less than 15 posts will be designated as a new member.
"Junior Member" any member who has between 15 and 99 posts is designated as a junior member.
"Member" any member who has beetween 100 and 499 posts is designated as a member.
"Senior Member" once someone has made 500 or more posts they become a senior member.
You will also notice usernames of other colors as well.
Developers have contacted the site admin and provided information about their work. In return their usernames are orange.
Premium members have chosen to support the site by paying for their status. They are awarded with a golden username and can customize their title. They also have a badge that displays under their username as well and enjoy access to a larger PM box compared to other members. If you wish to learn more about premium membership please follow this link http://androidforums.com/payments.php.
Guides are members of the community who have been idenitifed by others as helpful members of the community who have agreed to volunteer their time to help with the housekeeping of android forums. Guides can be identified by their username being green and their badge .
Moderators are members of the community who have been chosen to help enforce the site rules moderators can be identified by their username being red as well as their badge If you see something in a thread that needs a moderator's attention please press the button to alert them.
Site administrators and the site owner have bold red usernames but they have badges that reflect their status and They are responsible for changes to the site, maintenance, and making the rules.
When you have a question about something you may want to post a thread about it instead of posting in an existing thread that is unrelated. If so you will just need to press the button.
Some of our forums require you to select a prefix prior to posting a new thread. Prefix.png
You should try to choose the best prefix for what you are posting about
The "General" prefix should be used for general discussion OTA, release date, prices... it is a catch all for anything that does not fit one of the other prefixes.
The "Tips" prefix should be used if you have a tip you wish to share.
The "Support" prefix should be used if you require support for an issue.
The "Accessory" prefix should be used if the thread is discussing any type of accessory.
Finally a tip for when you are making a thread titles like "HELP!!!" do not identify your issue and may cause less people to look at the thread. When naming a thread try using a short description of the problem instead of a generic title
When you want to reply to a thread there are several options available to post.
You can press the button (See: 1 below) that is located both above and below the thread on the left hand side.
You can also use the button (See: 2 below) located at the bottom-right of each post in the thread.
There are two options using the quick reply box "Post Quick Reply" which will post in the thread without having to refresh the page and "Go Advanced" (See: Advanced below) which will take you to a page where you can preview your reply.
If you want to quote one or more previous replies in the thread you can use the button (See: 3 below) or the button (See: 4 below) located at the bottom-right of each post in the thread.
To use the quote button just press it and you will be taken to the reply page with the quoted post already inserted in the reply box.
To use the multiquote button press it on all the posts you wish to quote other than the last one on the last one press the quote button and you will be taken to the reply page with all the selected posts already inserted in the reply box.
Once you are done with your reply press submit reply at the bottom of the reply box and you will be redirected to the thread with your new reply posted.
If you want to search the forums for a specific topic several options are available for you.
You can use the quick search link. Quick Search Link.png
Here you would be doing a basic search. You may wish to narrow down your search by using some of the other options available.
You can use the tag search feature Tag Search.png
With this you would search tags assigned to threads by the thread creator. Tag Search 2.png
Keep in mind tags are optional when creating threads so you may not be searching everything by using a tag search.
You can search by keyword. When using the search by keyword function you can choose to specify if you want to search the titles of threads only or all posts.
You can search by user name. When using the search by username function you can specify if you are searching for all the user's posts or just the threads created by the user.
You can also choose to search by tag in the advanced search.
If you wish to search a specific forum you can choose it using the search in forum(s) feature. If you wish to search multiple forums use the ctrl button to select more than just one forum.
When searching forums that require prefixes you can specify which prefix you are searching for by using find threads with prefix.
You can use the find threads with feature. Where you can specify how many replies you wish the threads in your results have.
You can specify a specific date range using the find posts from feature.
You can choose how you want the results displayed to you by using the show results by option.
Also from the quick search box you can find all thanked posts, which will display the most recent 200 thanked posts. thanked posts.png
If you are in a forum and wish to search that forum for something you can use the search this forum link in the upper right corner of the forum. Forum Search.png
There is an advanced feature here as well which will take you to the same advanced search but automatically select the forum you were in to search.
If you are in a forum with prefixes you can also filter the threads by the prefix by using the filter by drop down box located in the upper left corner of the forum. prefix filter.png
A sticky is a thread that has been deemed important enough to be "stuck" to the top of the forum it is in. We have stickys for various reasons and the different ways to access android forums display stickys differently. If you are browsing the full site a sticky will have the word "Sticky" next to the thread. sticky.PNG
If you are browsing using tapatalk you will sin a pin symbol that shows which threads are stickys. 2013-04-16 23.12.37.png
On any mobile device you are viewing this forum on, you can toggle into and out of mobile view at will. You may toggle to mobile view by accident and wish to toggle out of it.
If you want to change to mobile view from full HTML scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the "Quick Style Chooser" drop down box in the lower left corner. Expand it and choose "--AF Mobile" This should cause the browser to refresh and activate mobile view. M_1.png
If you are in mobile view and wish to go back to full HTML just scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the hyperlink that says "Back to Full HTML" in the lower left corner and the browser should refresh back to the normal layout. M_2.png
You should use the button when a post breaks the site rules or if you need a thread modification (thread name change, thread move...). After you report a post the moderators are alerted to the post and will decide if there needs to be anything done. After you press the button you are given a box to describe what the issue with the post is. If you think something should be reported then report it and the moderators will be able to make the final decision on it, remember the only bad report is the one that doesn't happen. And don't worry that the poster you are reporting will find out they are not given that information.
You will be taken to a new page that lists every forum available here. Scroll and find all the forums you wish to add to your favorite forums list and when you find one check the box beside it's name. FF Check.png
Once you have selected all the forums you want at the bottom of the list press save. The page will save and refresh. FF Save.png
About the suggestion box and private chat with staff
We are always looking for ways to make the forums better and are open to suggestions. If you have an idea for a feature or you notice a bug or you think a section would be helpful then make a thread for it in the Suggestion Box.
Also from here if you have something that you would like to discuss just with staff you can make a thread in the Private Chat With Staff area, here the only people who can see the thread you make are you and the guides, mods, and admin. You can also use the private chat area to alert staff members of a forum that needs to be cleaned up, if you notice there are a bunch of root threads in the general section or the prefixes are all wrong for some reason just create a new thread in the private chat with staff area to alert the staff to take a look at it and try to get it cleaned up.
If you would like to contact just Moderators and not the entire staff feel free to go here: Private Chat with Moderators. Threads that you make in this forum work like the Private Chat with Staff forum, where only you and the Moderators can see it.
You can either enter the URL of the image you wish to use or choose to upload a picture from your CPU. If you try to change it to a picture that is too big and can't be resized properly you will get an error, otherwise once you press save changes the screen should refresh and you will see your new image. Then you can go back to your profile and see your new image as well.
Also on your profile there are several tabs below your profile image. P_Tabs.png
You can edit your information by clicking the about me tab and then clicking the little pencil icon next to whichever information you want to edit.
You can also edit the information here by clicking on the "Edit Your Details" link in your user control panel and filling out the associated box then hitting save changes at the bottom. P_Details.png
Note if you want to edit your signature please see this post.

Now you will see the edit avatar options. Avatar.png
Make sure the use custom avatar radio button is checked and then you have two options. You can put in the URL for a picture that is already on the web or choose to upload an avatar from your computer. In the screen shot I have chosen to upload an image from http://www.yeahha.com/customavatarlink.jpg then you can click save changes to pull the picture from the URL you indicated. Note your avatar is limited based on your status so if you get an error you may need to try to find a small image or resize it yourself.
You can also choose the option to upload a file from your computer. When you click "Choose File" you will get a file explorer pop up box that will allow you to browse your computer and select an image. Once you have selected the image you wish to use you click save changes. When you upload an image from your computer the file automatically resizes for you.
After you click save changes if the avatar changes the screen will refresh and you will now see a broken image where your avatar used to be in the edit avatar options give it a few moments and refresh again and you should be greeted with your new avatar.
Once you have 25 posts you will be able to display a signature under some of your posts. In an effort to make the forum run as best as it can the signature will only display on your first post per page in a thread it will also display under your "About Me" tab on your profile. If you wish to edit your signature go to your user control panel and click the Edit Signature link in the box on the left. Signature.png
At the top of the screen you will see a preview of your current signature. Under that is an edit box where you can type out what you want your new signature to be. If you are a premium member you will have a box to add images to your signature under that. Finally there is the save changes button you will hit after you are done editing your signature. S_Edit.png
You can use BBCode in your signature. You can have up to 5 lines that are displayed in the signature if you have more than that when you try to save it you will receive an error message. Before saving your signature be sure to preview it to make sure it is to your satisfaction.
As you spend time here you may find some posters you want to befriend in an official manner. You can friend other users here at android forums and others can friend you as well. Your friends will display on your profile. Friends.png
You can send your own friend requests to people and others can send requests to you.
To send a friend request you can navigate to their profile and choose the "Befriend [username]" link in the friends box. Friend_Request.png
You will be sent to a page that confirms you want to add them to your contacts, and also have an option to send a friend request by checking the box. FR_Confirm.png
After you click yes it will send the request to the other member to confirm the friendship.
When someone sends you a friend request you you will receive a notification of a new friend request. FR_Notify.png
You can click on the "Incoming Friend Request" link and you will be taken to your friends and contacts in your user control panel. The options in your user control panel are general options available to you that change your experience her at android forums. You can change your options by going to your user control panel and pressing Edit Options in the box on the left. editoptions2.PNG
Under login and privacy options you can toggle invisible mode if you do not wish to be shown on the active user list. You can also allow others to download your vCard to keep you as a contact.
Under messaging and notifications you can toggle if you want to receive emails in a few circumstances either from admin or if you get a friend request. If you wish to subscribe to every thread you post in you can change the default subscription mode to anything other than "Do not subscribe". You can toggle the private messaging system or choose to only receive messages from moderators and contacts. You can choose to receive an email whenever you get a new message and if you want to have the pop up that alerts you of a new message. Under visitor messaging you can toggle visitor messages if you wish and you can limit the use of the visitor message system to contacts and moderators.
Under the thread display options you can choose to toggle signatures, avatars, and images posted in threads. You can toggle oldest or newest first in thread view. If you choose newest first the newer replies will be on page 1 of a thread and you will read from the bottom up. You can change the amount of posts per page when viewing a thread. You can also choose to hide threads with no new replies within a certain time period and set up for auto resizing of images.
Under miscellaneous options you can choose your default editor for when you "go advanced" in replying to a thread or message as well as what editor you use when making a new thread. The WYSIWYG editor does not work in all browsers so you may find that if you change browsers with this option checked you will have a different editor. You can also toggle the default skin if you want the forum to always appear in mobile view.
If you want to send another member a message you can do so using our private message system. You can go to your user control panel and click Send New Message (Note that this method requires you to manually enter the member's username whereas the below methods automatically place the user's name in the "recipients" field of the private message form). PM_CP_Send.png
Alternatively you can navigate to the profile of who you wish to send the message to and click the contact info tab and choose the "Send a private message to [username]". PM_P_Send.png
Also on the profile you can click the "send message" drop down under their profile picture and choose to send a message. PM_P_Send_2.png
The last way to start a message is when browsing the forum clicking on their name (in any post of theirs) and choosing the option to send a private message. PM_T_Send.png
Once you have opened up the new message form by following one of the above examples, all fields must contain information or it will not allow you to send the message.
You need three things:
1. Recipient Username
2. Message Title
3. A Message PM.png
Request a read receipt will alert you once the message is read under the "Track PM option in your user control panel.
Save a copy of the message in your Sent Items folder. Keeps the message in your sent items folder if you wish to read it later, these will count against your limit for messages.
Show your signature toggles your signature.
Automatically parse links in text makes a URL a link without you having to do so manually.
Disable smiles prevents the smileys from showing so instead of you would see :D;):p:cool:
Once you are done press submit message and the other member will be notified of your message.
When the other member replies to your message you will receive a pop up box letting you know. PM_Popup.png
You can click cancel to ignore it for right now or okay to view it. If you choose to view it you should see a second pop up PM_Popup_2.png
If you press OK it will open the message in a new window and you can look at it whenever you get around to it. If you choose cancel it will take you to your new message in the current window. If you chose to ignore the message with the first popup you can still click your notifications and it will have a link to your unread messages. PM_Notify.png
Once you open the new message, you will have a quick reply box that you can type in to reply back to the person. The quick reply box will automatically quote your back and forth messages at the top of the reply box. Your new message will start below the quotes. If you do not wish to quote some or all of the previous message(s) simply delete the quoted text from the reply box. PM_Reply.png
A visitor message is a message on a profile that is public to see. You can post these on profiles and other members can post them on your profile. When you receive a visitor message you will get a notification. visitor notify 2.png
When you click on the bold "Unread Visitor Messages" link you will be taken to the visitor message section of your profile. view visitor message.png
If you wish to reply to a new visitor message press the "View Conversation" link and you will be taken to a page with a text box where you can reply to the message, by replying it will post a visitor message on the other person's profile and notify them of a new message. visitor message reply.png
You can also navigate to someone's profile and at the top of the visitor messages tab there is a text box you can type a visitor message into. profile visitor.png
If you find a specific user it just too much for you to stand you can add them to your ignore list and you will no longer see their posts and can not receive private messages from them (with the exception of PM's from Mods/Admin).
If you think your posts or threads have disappeared since they aren't where you remember posting them. They could have been moved or more likely they are further back in the forums and have just fallen off page 1. The easiest way to find these is by pressing the "Your Posts" or "Threads" hyperlinks in the favorite forums box yourposts.png
You can also find them by going to your profile by clicking your name in the welcome box in the top right of your screen welcomebox.PNG
Then from there click on the statistics tab followed by "Find all posts by..." or "Find all threads started by..." statistics.PNG
Once you do this the forums will search and display your posts/threads in order of most recent first.
Creating a poll is very simple, you have two choices, you can create a poll when you create a thread or add one at a later date. If you want to add one at a later date, simply open your thread, click on thread tools, and choose add a poll (and follow the instructions following the third screenshot).
To create a poll on thread creation, create your thread and before you click submit scroll down to Additional Options.
First, copy the image URL of the images you wish to post and then when making a new post go to the
icon and paste the image URL. Hit "OK" and your image will be posted.
You may include links to your Photobucket, Picassa or Flickr account. Look for perma-link options, and grab just the URL, typically ending in jpg.
NOTE: First posts no images or links. Images aren't allowed in your signature unless you upgrade to Premium Membership.
If you would like to add images from your pc or phone, when you click reply, scroll down the page and you will see the Additional Options section and a section named Attach Files. Click on Manage Attachments. attach-files.png
You will see a popup. Notice at the bottom of the popup there are size restrictions depending on what type file it is. If you don't get the popup when you click Manage Attachments, check your browser and allow popups for Android Forums. MANAGE ATTACHMENTS.png
Click Browse and select the file you want and then click upload. BROWSE FILES.png
The pictures will show up as thumbnails at the bottom of your post that people can click and see an enlargement. You can also have them show as thumbnails in the body of your post instead of the bottom, like the pics in my post. To do that, first click the Advanced Editor icon. ADVANCED EDITOR.png
In the picture, you will see where I placed [ATTACH][/ATTACH] tags. The number in the tag is the number assigned to your uploaded image. If you click on an attachment you uploaded, or just hover your mouse over it, you'll see the url is like http://androidforums.com/attachment.phpattachmentid=53154&stc=1&d=1366308099. The first number after attachmentid=, is the number that goes between the Attach tags.
