Odd issues with Root Explorer trying to complete this...I know it worked once upon a time. Now I'm getting paste failures trying to copy LP's .apk file.

HAAAAAAAAAAAALP!

You probably just need to hit the little tab at the tap which says Mount R/W

I wish it was that easy....Root Explorer shows it as being mounted R/W and only gives an option to mount R/O which doesn't work.

FYI -

I also tried downloading an update to BusyBox (thinking it might be partially to blame) but still no joy.

How? You get force closes? If so try toggling it on/off a second time, usually does it for me

Hmmm, truly bizarre. So when you copy the apk from data/app and then try to paste in system/app you are already in R/W and toogling off and on does not work huh

yup, that's about it. There's only one more piece to the puzzle that might be relevant. I had an older .apk for Root Explorer that for some reason won't update. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. At this point, I might remove it and do a fresh install from the marketplace unless you guys have another root filemanager that you recommend?

No I still like RE although I do know it got updated fairly recently. Probably wont hurt to uninstall and re-install the current version either. I wish I could give you a better answer but your problem is not one I can replicate

If you root your phone, does TWZ go away? Or is it always there no matter what you install or change? I've been reading on how to root and seem to get most of it but I haven't found anywhere that actually states what it does when you root to the factory installed software or ROM?
Am I just having a blond moment or what?

just rooting the phone does nothing to change your system...other than allowing you access to programs/files that you otherwise could not.

it won't remove or change anything else, unless you manually do it yourself.

to remove touchwiz, you have to follow the steps outlined in the op of this thread. it requires either use of a terminal or root explorer (root explorer being the easiest way of course)

Default Think FB fc issue has been resolved..

The issue I'm talking about is the acore fc that occurs when fb syncs contacts. I have mine set to once a day but have been syncing manually since I disabled tw bc the fc was annoying.

This is was worked for me:
enable tw again in root explorer
Use home switcher to switch back to tw. No need to set as default
sync ur fb contacts and birthdays once
EDIT: cripple TW again in root manager
switch back to LP and set as default.
Acore fc should not happen anymore.

Then what was point of removing tw in the first place because you brought it back? And having tw under lp causes lag. Tw and lp don't play well together..

"Super Manager" I hope one day to figure out why Root Explorer stopped working as I preferred it.

Thanks. Edited to reflect that I left a step out. Crippling TW again after a successful sync.

Seems like you have to sync with TW once.

Just a word of advice, once you remove or rename the Touchwiz APK file DO NOT install or flash the puzzle piece lock screen after using a 3rd party ROM, then select the "Glass unlock" as the unlock screen. Did this to my sis' phone and it would lock up after every restart, effectively bricking it. Had to reflash a superclean ROM by booting into Clockwork. I'm guessing the puzzle piece is integrated with Touchwiz somehow?

Otherwise, thanks for the info! Very happy to get more bloat off the phone

One day in this is definitely a smoother operation. Im not kidding the quickness of replacing the dock apps from app list is worth it alone. Before it would take like 15 seconds for that list to pop up and now its automatic.

**Please note** even though I/we copy and paste from data/app once pasted in system/app it no longer resides in data/app. Why is that significant? When updates to LP come out you cannot update since the file/folder is not in data/app so you will have to manually DL a new apk and then re-paste in system/app. Its a bit of extra work but worth it from my standpoint
2 Questions

1: When you manually copy and paste the update to ADW or LP or whichever launcher one uses, does RE prompt you to replace the file with the same name? In other words, you use the exact same process as listed in this thread and then the outdated file is automatically replaced. No need to get rid of it or any extra steps?

2: How are most people tracking updates to the 3rd party launchers? Just checking appbrain every now and again? Subscribing to the RS feeds of the developers? Just curious.

When you copy the launcher from data/app you just paste it into system/app there is no renaming of it (if you are on dj05 you ll have to set system/app to r/w first).....then rename or delete touchwizlauncher...,you ll get immediate force closes so power off or battery pull then reboot and ur fine

Launchers are almost always updated in the market....just update that way

nitsu, I think peter's asking if your launcher gets update from market, it goes to data/app, and when he copys the updated file from data/app to system/app (which has pre-updated version), RE replaces the old one with updated new one?
or you need to rename the files if RE lacks the ability to replace files that have same name to newer one.

I'm curious about it, too

I just got rid of TW, too!

set system/app as r/w
copied org.adwfreak.launcher.apk in data/app
pasted that apk in system/app
renamed touchwiz30launcher.apk to .old extension
FC loop happened and reboot
reloaded beautiful widget and poweramp widget

I forgot to check my RAM usage before remove TW, but I'm having 250mb average now.
I hope it gives me better battery life
working good so far!

If it has the same name it should copy.right over...,i've actually never done it though as i seemingly wipe.data 3 or more times a week....so i might not be the best person to answer this question.

so i'm not sure why, but I didn't have a com.fede.launcher.apk in my data/app folder. I did have the lp (Launcher.apk) in my system/app folder already, so i just renamed the tw to .old at the end. seems to have worked. guess a rom or something i have put it in there for me or something?

Hey guys, came across this thread last night while just doing searching/reading. This thread made me go ahead and root my Fascinate. I also went ahead and then copied over LauncherPro and ADW EX to the system/app folder. I've been trying to experiment with each, but it seems like so far LauncherPro in the end seems to be the better replacement. Any launcher just by itself seems to be good, but it seems to me that overall LauncherPro is using less ram than ADW EX. I'm torn between using the two, but I'm sticking more with LP because of the Plus version's widgets.

Like was mentioned my phone is almost instant now when you'd go to add a new application from a long homescreen press or going to change the function of one of the icons in the dock how the app list to select from does come up almost instantly. Plus everything else on the phone seems smoother. Even the boot up.

Have any of you guys kept an eye on RAM usage with the different launchers and seen if one is better than the other?

Now I'm debating going on over and updating to DJ05 to help make the GPS a bit better and turn the Fascinate into a perfect phone for me.

Glad things are running better for you...but don't make decisions based on ram for anything...android is a linux based os that handles memory differently than a windows computer.

Seems like you have to sync with TW once.
Unfortunately, I kept encountering acore FC's even after successfully syncing once. I wound up just re-renaming TW to .apk to avoid the FC's.

Simply out of curiosity: What happens to the wallpaper that is usually an available option when editing my homescreens? After getting rid of touchwiz, they disappeared. Even the ones that came with Super Clean. Now I can only use the ADW one, live wallpaper, or go to the gallery. Can I find them with RE?

Those are the system wallpapers built into touchwiz....getting rid of the launcher gets rid of them...,you can extract them before ditching touchwiz....but personally you might be better of downloading zedge from the market...,it has thousands of wallpapers for free and its where many of us get ours from.
