Default Changing Brightness (not set to auto)

Every once in a while I will notice significant decrease in battery life and when I go to about phone it's all coming from display. So I go to Settings and Brightness and it's cranked up to 75 or 80%. I always keep it around 25 to 30% with auto brightness unchecked. Why would my brightness settings reset themselves like this? I am rooted, running stock Froyo EB01, no ROM, LPP. Any help would be much appreciated.

Default

Greenmunky, I have a rooted SF EB01 2.2.1 and I can physically see changes in my screen's brightness. I have unchecked auto brightness and power save mode. I saw another post that said some Galaxy S devices supported swiping in the top portion of the notification bar where the date/time/battery/signal is and by swiping to the left it would change brightness with no notification. However, that doesn't seem to work with mine as I tried to duplicate it.

I don't want another app to control the brightness I would just like it to stay at the setting I choose.

Anyone else have any ideas?
