Default Beer

Great, good, bad, and terrible beers. Suggestions to try and suggestions to try to avoid. Come one come all: let's hear it for beer.
Stories involving beer? Sure!

Please..at a minimum, try to include:
Name:
Style:
Cost:
Along with anything else you might like to mention.

EX:
Dogfish head 60 or 90 minute
India pale ale
About $9 for 6 pack
One of the best beers around. I asked my 4th wife to marry me while drinking this beer.

OR

Big Flats (Walgreen's Pharmacy brand...no joke)
pilsner?..or something
$2.99 for a 6 pack
Cheaper than water. Cheaper than gas. Just cheap...and kinda gross. Really gross. Maybe use it to batter fish or onion rings...

So: without further ado...BEER

Name: Beer - seriously, gold can w/ the word beer down the side in white like you used to see on Married With Children
Style: yeast urine
Cost: $3.99 / case (early 90s)

When I was in the Army I went to an off base party and this is what the host served (after the glass of clear stuff he told me not to spill on the grass because it would kill it).

Reading this thread forced me to go pour one:

Name: "Old Home Wrecker" (home brewed)
Style: dark amber, slightly bitter, nutty. Rather happy with the result.
Cost: about 50p/pint

Sweetwater
420 pale ale
$8 for a 6 pack
This is a beer from Atlanta ga. Its quite good. They've grown into a mighty brewery down here and they have a lot of good beers. This one is their most popular. Curious to know if anyone outside of the S.E. sees this company

Shiner Bock is an excellent beer in my opinion. Cost: $25 a case.Favorite beer = Franziskaner Weissbier Dunkel Cost: $2.50 a pint.Cheap beer: Milwaukee's Best Light. Cost: dirt cheap.. Doesn't have enough flavor to taste bad.. or good .. might be just canned water.

Uh oh, this is a bad thread for me to step into. I used to be a fanatic at Beer Advocate. I'm a huge beer geek and a certified beer judge (BJCP).
Favorite brewery would probably be Jolly Pumpkin. They open ferment and barrel age all their beers making them a touch sour. One of the most accessible of theirs is La Roja. It's an amber Belgian style. Cost will run you ~$10 per bottle, it's a 750mL. Love it.

Oh, do I love beer. The only beers I drink lately are from a local brewing company, they're called Epic brewing and I absolutely love their beers.

My personal favorite is called Brainless on Peaches.
Style: Brainless Belgian Ale with added peach purree, aged in chardonnay barrels. It has hints of cinnamon and each batch is slightly different. With each batch they only make 800 bottles, so you always get a slightly different beer per batch.
Cost: $11 per 22 ounce bottle.

Checking out Epics' beers. They look like a great brewery, really funky stuff. Glad Utah's beer scene is growing. We had some at the airport when we were there, good but oh so low in abv.
Awesome, just saw Epic did a collaboration with DC Brau! We love their beers here.

It's pretty horrible here, any beer you buy in the grocery store is only 3.2% it's ridiculous, you have to go to a state owned liquor or wine store to get any of the good stuff. I love Epic's beers. All of their beers range from 5-14% ABV. They also have an Imperial IPA that I absolutely love.

There's nothing better than a good local brewery.

Yep. When I lived in Lawrence, KS we had Free State Brewery. It was just a brew pub at the time but I believe they started bottling not too long ago. Beers were fantastic (plus they had great food).
Every April they would do an anniversary party and bring out vintages of their Barleywine. Got to try some 5 year old stuff, awesome.

For mass produced, I like Stella, Yuengling, or just straight Budweiser.

For local, when my grandmother died and I was in their hometown, we stopped at a Microbrewery, called the Brauhouse (Lucan, MN). They had an awesome Cream Stout called Moo Juice. Their Lager (my staple) was quite tasty too.

In Savannah, Moon River Brewery has lots of tasty choices. For those who like Cider, they have one on tap that is the best I have ever had.

Humm....

My favorite is probably Red Hook...

First time I had it, I was on a business trip and went on a tour of the Red Hook brewery.

The original is currently a bit hard to find where I live, but I can get the Red Hook Long Hammer IPA, which is good too.

As for an everyday bear, I have to admit I drink Miller Lite.

Lets hear it then, dread: Give us the goods. I really really love good beer and am always looking for something new (the same issue I have with ROMs....) What do you recommend for a really good beer for someone on a budget (around $10 for a 6 pack?)..also, is Budweiser really the king of beers?

I have noticed that different brands of beer hit me a little different. Corona is great but I stick with labatts blue becuase it's consistent on how it hits me! lol

Beers like Budweiser bring me up too fast, then when I stop drinking I crash. Labatts doesn't do that to me.
I can get a 12 pack for about 11 bucks.

Lately I've been drinking:

Great Lakes Brewing Co.-Conway's Irish Ale

Blue Moon Winter Abbey Ale
Both about $9/six pk

A little cheaper:
Amber Bock

Shock Top ($7.50-$8/six)

Shock Top poured in a glass looks like something they would serve on the Enterprise lol.

Does Labatts still make their Ice beer? That's was a staple for me years ago until it fell off the State allowed list or was discontinued. Never knew for certain... just was no longer available here in doodah.

If you're looking for something that's pretty good and cheapish, check out the beers from Saranac. You can usually find a mixed 6 pack or 12 pack giving you the chance to try some different styles.

I wasn't aware they made ice beer. I don't recall seeing it anywhere, but I usually just go into the store and get what I want and not stick around to browse.

I haven't seen saranac since I lived in new York (about 10 years ago) but I used like their pale ale.

My beer of choice is Newcastle. I think it is simply the tastiest beer ever. The problem is, around here, it's somewhat hard to find. It's absolutely best out of a keg (the canned Newcastle is horrible and the bottles aren't much better), but restaraunts don't like to offer it because it is expensive, so they have to put a hefty price tag on it, thus not many people buy it.

Their Ice was very good IMO. It was likely 10-15 years ago however when I was drinking it. Very clean tasting. A man's taste evolves as he travels down life's path... I might not like it today. I was drinking Coors Light prior to Labatts Ice. I exclusively drink dark beers now.

I will share my philosophy, "Life is too short for cheap beer"!

I am sitting down with a Shiner Bock at the moment, my all around favorite daily drinker, won't put up details since olbriar already did.

Newcastle is another favorite, and very similar to Shiner Bock, a little lighter and sweeter tasting, and available in a "mini-draught" for $20.00!

Red Hook ESB is also on my list.

As for some of my local favorites:

Stash IPA
IPA
Independence Brewing, Austin, TX
$9 a 4 pack

Fireman's 4
American Blonde Ale
Real Ale Brewing Co. Blanco, TX
$8-9 a 6 pack

I will post more as the fog clears from my beer deprived brain.

Newcastle is pretty good, but I don't understand why they put it in clear bottles. (a cardinal sin in the beer world)

Someone mentioned mass produced beers earlier and I would throw Newcastle in there. It has a pretty smooth taste from what I remember.

I must update my post about Shiner Bock beer. They just increased their prices and now a case cost $28. Not that the increase will change my rate of consumption...

Have you tried any of the new DC regional breweries stuff yet?
DC Brau is pretty solid. Lost Rhino (VA) is great. If you live near Falls Church, definitely get to Mad Fox. Great beer and great food. One of the best brewpubs I've been to.

Chocolate City, Port City and 3 Stars are another few locals. Their stuff is okay, they need time.
Stillwater is probably my favorite local (MD). They make mostly saisons, great Belgian style beers.

Had a Dogfish Head 120 minute that I aged for 1 year last night. Oh boy was it delicious.

More details please! We don't get that down here in Atlanta. Where are you out of curiosity?

Located in NJ - bought it last year and aged it until last night.

Some more info: 120 Minute IPA | Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales

18% ABV - so delicious.

Mmmm.... I buy the 90 and 60 minute down here and love them both. Really really amazing beer. GA has some archaic beer alcohol-content laws so I won't be getting 120 anytime soon...sigh

Hey, in Indiana where I live you can't even buy beer on Sundays. The only remaining state to do that. Connecticut To Become 49th State To Sell Alcohol On Sunday

We just passed Sunday sales in the last 6 months. We have something like a 12% max alcohol content for beer....yet we can buy golden grain 190 proof liquor.
