That'd be useful if there was one that didn't have a goose neck (my cig. lighter is where the the corner at the base of the dashboard center console, and the between-the-seats center console; it's a 2000 Saturn LS200). Maybe a multi-segment column that could be oriented like a gooseneck. Or an articlated conduit type holder (like many dashboard holders have -- or is that what you meant by gooseneck? I think of goosenecks being like the trailer hitches or cleaner bottles that are rigid but somewhat S shaped).

And, in order to keep it from draining the car battery, it'd be nice to have a switch on it that would make it draw _no_ current at some points in time. Most cig. lighter power plugs I've seen still draw power even if you have nothing plugged into them.

Last, have it be useable in both portrait and landscape (have it be rotateable, and have it hold the phone in a way that you can open the screen when it's in landscape orientation).

But, yes, having something like that for the G1 would be outstanding.

Default Brodit cradle

I don't know if you can get hold of Brodit cradles in the States, but there's a site here in the UK that sells them;
http://www.clove.co.uk/viewProduct.aspx?product=B897E009-5E8C-4528-87F3-9FAF6E16E092
Basically, you tell them exactly which make and model of car you have, and which phone (yes, they support the G1 - I checked!) and they supply a mounting bracket for your car, and a cradle for the phone that screws to whichever adapter you have. They're available either with or without a power adapter. And the really cool thing is that they swivel, so you can use the G1 in either portrait or landscape mode, and even with the keyboard open.

I bought one for my father a couple of years ago for the HTC phone he had then, and it's well manufactured, so worth the extra cost.

The only thing I think they're missing though is a 3.5mm headhphone socket that I'm sure a lot of people would want to hook up to their car stereo.

STM

Update: Yes, they are available for you guys on the other side of the pond; http://www.proclipusa.com/Default.asp

i was looking at that very same cradle today on the proclipusa site.
i cant exactly see cause the photo is not at the right angle, but i don't think you will be able to get at the usb port when its in the cradle and also the gps receiver will be covered as well.

the one on clove.co.uk looks far better, but i wouldnt be paying £45 for a car mount

I think what semach.the.monkey is saying is that proclip is a distributor for brodit as if on brodit's site if you select USA it shows proclip is one of their distributors.

Sweet by the way, I want one. Not too wild about the clip on the vent thing though, at it will block some cold air in the summer but its the best soloution I have seen so far.

Default Amzer G1 cradle with FM transmitter being sold by Fommy website

Do not by this product!!! I just ordered it and received it defective out of the box...It's a complete piece of crap and doesn't even look like what's in the picture. Not only that but fommy is refusing to refund the money paid. I was excited as hell to have this thing, I've been looking for this product forever. Pass this on to all...don't get suckered by this P.O.S. like I did.

I have to agree with you. I purchased this and it is very cheap feeling and the power adapter has some short of short in it. It will work for a few seconds and then I have to wiggle the cord to make it work. Complete garbage.

After that debacle, I bought the clip system from ProClip USA and it is awesome. It doesn't have the FM transmitter, but it is a solid cradle that works very well with the G1 in landscape or portrait mode.

I just got a cradle from ProClip USA and I am not so sure I am in love with it. The battery cover on the G1 seems to keep the phone from sitting in the cradle all of the way (I got the cradle with the 3-in-1 usb/charge/mini). I e-mailed ProClip USA and they told me I need to remove the battery cover for the cradle to work properly. Since it wasn't mentioned at all on their web site and paid ~$100 for the cradle and custom car mount (which I have been happy with in the past with my previous vehicles), I e-mailed them letting them know how displeased I was.
