I've spent about 40 minutes hunting around here and on other forums and haven't found any good information on whether or not it's possible to unlock a rooted G1 without having to buy the code (I've done that before and would like to avoid doing it in the future).

The closest thing I've found is this forum post about a leaked, unlocked Google Dev bootloader, but I haven't been able to confirm that anywhere else and I'm not sure I 100% trust the source.

So the question is: Is there a way to unlock a G1 just using downloaded software (like you can do with an iPhone)? Or am I just going to have to pay the $15 again to get an unlock code?

If you are a customer of the telco it's locked to you can call and ask them for the (free) code. TMO does this after 90 days or so, I hear.

But if you're in a hurry I'd just buy the code. Looks like they're going for <$10 on eBay.
