I just got it on 10/22 and it comes with a 1 GB Expandable SD Card... Am I missing something here?
Ok, I am not sure what the Android Operating system takes for space, but I am going to assume that you have loaded a few things here and there already? 1GB is really not all that when it comes to Micro SD anymore. I am purchasing 16GB.
you may not even need to remove apps. if you have done a lot of browsing you could have a pretty large cache already. in the browser hit the menu key then go to More then scroll all the way down to Settings. then about halfway down you can delete cache, history, etc.
btw if you ever want to see which apps are using the most data you can go to Settings > Applications > Manage applications then it will give you a list of your apps and the space they are using. you can then hit the menu key to sort by size. clicking on the apps will give you the option to uninstall or delete saved data within the app to free up space.

I have an HTC incredible and a ton of free memory (579MB to be exact) but still getting this low space message.
I've cleared the browser cache and I've also removed some apps but the error is still there and I can't download any new apps.
Any help would be most appreciated!
Not sure if your problem its exactly like mine but I know when I get the same notification it tells me to go to the mail...and that's as far as I can see it says, however just recently when I tap the notification it takes me directly to the mail app, the one by htc that came installed, and all I do is clear the data then force stop and it works every time,alternately u can go to settings> applications> manage applications> and select the mail app and clear the data from there. sort of a hassle and I don't see why they would make it like this but maybe this helps

Rooting will not cure the problem. I'm rooted and have apps moved to the sdcard, and I still get the error message from time to time.
I'm getting this error. I have a 4 gb SD card but most of the app's won't give me the option to move them to it! How stupid is that. It is definitely down to the internal memory being used up, happens each time I download an app.

Thanks, that worked for me (for now). I have an Incredible too and get the same low on space message from time to time.
Factory reset corrected the problem. It's a pain to reinstall all your apps, however it was a more painful that my phone was not syncing due to the low storage error.
OK, to summarize:
- The error has NOTHING to do with the SD card's size or % full
- When you see it, you will soon (?already?) lose your phone's synching calendar and contact information
- The steps you need to take :
empty the browser's cache (command in 'internet' app)
the apps that might still allow you to move then to SD card (look inside settings, apps, manage apps, all, then need to open each app to see if 'move to card' isn't gray'd out)
empty the native mail client messages (look inside settings, apps, manage apps, all)
empty text msgs (look inside settings, apps, manage apps, all)
- More drastically, I've found it useful to delete all information in contacts (look inside settings, apps, manage apps, all) and then immediately go to Accounts and re-synch from the cloud/Google data to regain a clean copy
- Then, you might want to reset your phone (using the power button)
However, now that I'm in Android 2.3, all these are still not enough.
The post above to blank the phone and reinstall everything is TOO painful (as if the dance I describe above wasn't enough!)... but I suspect it'll work (but only until the next time whatever this is is full, again).
Surely there's a data-management BUG in the OS causing this. When I open the memory assessment tools, I see that I have 500Mb free memory, and only 200Mb used, so the whole premise that there's inadequate memory is a lie.

Then I went into Settings, Application, Manage Applications, and clicked on the Facebook App. I cleared the data and immediately the logo went away and I was able to use my phone normally.

I had same problem with my apollo 3 (gt-i5800). After download and install you should... "confirm" this, the app will start and then downloaded source is removed - or somethnig like this.
Last day i downloaded few different roms, and i have this problem (on vivek's rom). I made SD card as default place for installation (adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2) and then get about 80 apps from appbrain.
Free place in phone was vanishing (?), app was installing on SD, App2SD shows few apps on phone and many on SD card, no one of above ideas working...

I agree it has nothing to do with your SD card. I agree, it only started after update from previous version of Android to 2.3.4. Epic 4G.

I too started to receive the problem on my HTC Droid Incredible only after the upgrade to 2.3.4, and deleting Facebook data as noted above worked for me.
I finally got sick of all the force closes and low space issues that came with the stock ROM. I installed Cyanogen 7.1 and everything runs great now. I have been running it for a couple months now, and will never go back. Not only does it fix a lot of the HTC bugs, but it also adds a boat load of features (and gets rid of all the bloatware!!!). Highly recommended for anyone running a HTC Incredible.

Doing this (clearing facebook data) worked for me too. I just had to re-login to facebook and everything was fine. Things started syncing again too. I think it's probably a bug because it started happening right after the new software update of 2.3.4 and like the others I clearly was not low on "internal memory" space. The SD card doesn't have anything to do with it. DON'T do a factory reset, that would waste your time.

Am having the problem described in this thread. Clearing Facebook did not help. I have PLENTY of storage space (internal, SDcard and memory - at least according to my phone). Went to root but the Cyanogen wiki states:
"Devices running Android version 2.3 or above are not currently rootable (unless previously rooted)."
I am running 2.3.4 and it is not rooted. Does anyone know if indeed I am unable to install Cyanogen 7.1?
Well indeed I just cleared the data from a number of apps: Living Social, Twitter, and a few others, and the low storage icon went away.
Must be related to Gingerbread because this just started since my update this week. And I have plenty, plenty of internal storage and memory. Must be a bug. And it's very annoying.
Experience from my Incredible/Android 2.3.4: Problem can be either filling global capacity (internal or sd -- then other solutions above about deleting programs or moving to sd are appropriate), or perhaps more commonly, with filling the data space reserved for a particular app (this was the case in my problem, and with several others posters here). In this 2d case of filling the data space, the fact that you have gb's of unused memory is irrelevant (this was my case), and Android is unfriendly in not telling you which app is the offender, so you must determine for yourself. Go to Systems -> Settings -> Applications, then choose each app in turn and look at the three Storage numbers: Total, Application, and Data. If Data is large (I don't have a good guide for this; my clue was that ratio of Data to Application was much higher than for other apps), then one option is to Clear Data (worked for me -- my offender was Calendar data; I hear others here say FB). Other option is Move to SD, which I did not try, or to offload data to SD or computer with one of the variety of 3d party apps or programs available (which I tried but couldn't complete since I waited to long to try and my system was pretty locked up with this out-of-memory problem).

Thank you so much for posting! I'm also an Incredible user; I don't even consider myself much of a FB user, checking in only a couple times/week, but clearing its data took out that Low Storage method like nothing else did (including deleting tons of mail, messages, applications -- making only a dent in the storage figures). I'd cleared Internet caches, etc. -- this FB data was the killer. It must be part of what runs the BUG that triggers the early warning system - and also prevented my Talk app from opening at all (horrible).

This fixed the icon showing up for me. I just cleaned my Google Mail cache and reloaded. It went away. Thanks for the post
I have an HTC Incredible and I have received the "Low on Space" message since October and I have been removing unused applications, clearing the cache, etc.. to get my phone to operate properly. I spoke with someone at the Verizon store and he said that he heard that the error is due to an installed "application killer" application caused a problem with how my phone views memory. I have an 8 GB card installed and have plenty of free available when I view the available space for all types of memory.
The Verizon guy said that I have to do a hard reset and reinstall all of my apps. I was delaying the reset because I didn't want to have to deal with it, but I am finally fed up and will be doing the hard reset in the next few days. Hopefully this will work.

My biggest breakthrough thus far with the same problem was to uninstall Facebook. Another software product written by coders who are uninformed about memory management. It's not going to be a part of my Android going forward.
Whatever I had tried, clear cache, re-install FB, clear old messages, etc..etc... other than hard reset (otherwise start to pay for those Apps again!), after awhile, the sign will still come on again......
.......definitely need something, an Apps or whatever, to better manage it.

That was the whole idea for the update! My phone worked fine for about a whole year! I used to tell everyone it was "INCREDIBLE" and there were no SYSTEM updates going on the whole time. I even had extensive data for expensive 3rd party software stored mostly on the SD card, which by the way I use to have the choice of moving data to SD card OR to PHONE MEMORY through the phone settings. Now since the upgrade, the option button for "Move To SD Card" are still there for most of my apps. but they are GREYED OUT! ALSO, they call it a "SYSTEM UPDATE" when in fact it SNEAKINGLY downloaded "Amazon MP3" . THIS IS AN APP. NOT A SYSTEM OR OS!!! Also, there is no way to delete/remove THIS APP except possibly through "ROOTING" which you will not get any help with from and are cautioned away from by VZW Co.
When I stopped in to the local VZW Co. Store during the Holidays ( Wierdly enough, it seemed like a GHOST TOWN there, especially for being 1 wk. before Christmas! ) and asked a rep. why I couldn't remove "MP3" App, he said it was because they're IN CAHOOTS with or UNDER LICENSE with HTC (AND YOU KNOW VZW PULLS ALL THE STRINGS! ) and that if you go deeply into the LEGAL MUMBO-JUMBO, you'll more or less find out, THEY OWN THE PHONE and CAN DO WHATEVER THE HELL THEY WANT TO!
The BEST thing we all have to do IS GET A "CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT" against VZW or/and HTC! VZW has been getting into A LOT OF TROUBLE LATELY, with a few lawsuits for other MONEY GRABBING SCHEMES, over the last 2 years. Remember I said that at what should have been one of the busiest nights, 1 wk. before Christmas, there was no other customers in the store but me!!! I had deleted almost all my Whatsapp messages and 75% of my regular messages.....after awhile the 'Low on space' came on again.....seems like whenever I try to clear the messages, something had been creeping up and occupying the space. In short, I am having lesser and lesser space as I clear than normal, until the messages failed to send or retrieve due to 'Low' on storage space. don't even know what is sitting in there......
.....only know that I have only used 26% of my storage space!
ok Friends...this forum is wonderful..there are 2 options when you get that message..
1. You need a new card
2. Your cache is full....
Always check the Cache first..then go buy a card if that doesnt work. I did it backwards but its all good...thank you friends for your knowledge and sharing.....
I have this same issue constantly. Previously it was apparently due to Google Earth. I uninstalled that, and it went away. But now it's back.
So of your two steps. 1, I cleared my cache. Nothing. You say 2 is to replace your card. Why? Are you saying that the card is most likely going bad? Because it certainly is not full, as it also wasn't in your example.

This won't prevent the problem from happening, but one approach to limiting App space is to not install apps but to use the browser version instead. What I do for many "apps" (NY Times, for example) is to go to the web site, create a bookmark, save that bookmark to my home page, and use that instead of the real App. You can do this for an incredible number of site-oriented apps -- in many cases the browser "app" is almost as functional as the real App. The storage required is just for the URL and its name -- very minimal.
Another problem I frequently have is having the manually close browser windows (probably because of the above). Go to the browser menu and "click on" windows. Close all the ones you don't need (most, usually).

I just did a factory data reset to try and free up some space on my htc hero. When I mount it to my computer it tell me i only have 98kb. On the SD & Phone Storage it says I have 96kb on my sd card and 143 mb of internal phone storage. I have no downloaded apps. I haven't got a clue on how to free up some space.

how do you that with mail because when i click on it in mange apps the potion to clear data and cache is greyed out like many other users on here
I have an HTC Incredible and am also convinced that this is a bug. This message pops up any time I am close to 512mb of storage left. Its been happening for months and most recently every day. I clear all of my data apps including FB, internet, and anything else needing it and it goes away for about a day. Recently I've been ignoring it and it pops up with a second message telling me that I need to leave at least 512kb open in order to receive messages. And this pops up when i have less than 512 MB left. To me this seems like a bug that gives you the message at 512mb rather than 512kb. I also don't think that a hard reset would do me any good. I don't know much about rooting or anything else but I think this needs a bug fix.
I have been plagued with this issue on my HTC Desire for a while. I cleared the Facebook cache & stopped a couple of sync processes that Astrid Tasks had running, and all is good now. The advice above is sound: look for apps with excessively large caches & end running processes you don't need.
