Default Ctrl key on the G1

Two of my favorite applications are GNU Screen and irssi (an ncurses irc application). Both of them require use of the ctrl key for complete functionality. I've got ConnectBot up and running, and have connected to my Linux server from my phone -- but without a ctrl key the usefulness is limited. Anyone know how Android handles (or can be made to handle) the ctrl key? Thanks in advance.

Hmm, seems like it would be possable to re-map the "alt, search, or @" keys to be ctrl, though you'd lose their native functions.

The @ key would be the best choice because you'd still have shift+2 for the @ sysmbol.

Though i'm not sure how you would go about achiving this. But I can help...

Hey developers! Make a key remaping app!

Press the trackball.

Such as "tracball-c" instead of "control-c".

The catch is, pressing a key re-sets the trackball. So you have to release the trackball after pressing the other key.

Also, 2 trackball presses is "Escape", so you have to be careful about accidentally hitting the trackball, or hitting it and not actually pressing a key.

Okay, I tried that, and I haven't had any luck. By way of example, ctrl-n in irssi switches to the next window/tab. Using the trackball (and being very careful to keep it pressed until the n key had been pressed), I simply got the character "n" printed on my screen. So, either the trackball is very finicky, or it simply doesn't work with the ConnectBot SSH application.

I'm happy to wait for a key-mapping application to show up (it will, I'm sure), but if anyone here has further ideas in the meantime . . .

Okay, seems that I was just doing it wrong. The trick is to press the trackball, release it, then press the other key. I guess I just misunderstood what people were saying.

Anyway, the ConnectBot devs have added some helpful keybindings that make things easy for screen users, too. I can now use my phone as a complete remote shell.
