Default Saving applications to SD card

Have you noticed a "Low on space" notification which when expended reads; "phone storage space is getting low". How can they expect people to use the android market if I can only hold the apps on the phone's memory. I called T-mobile and was told that I cannot transfer the apps to the SD card!!! Doesn't this defy the whole purpose of this phone, use of the android marker and paying $25-$35 for unlimited use of all this. I should only be limited by the size of my SD card. Any suggestions on how to copy them to the SD card or do we need to wait for an application to that. The T-mobile "G1 Tech Support" were as puzzled as I was.

Anybody know how to copy android apps to the SD card???

I've finally encountered this problem as well. I'm also stuck as to how to transfer files into the SD card. Has anyone found a way around this?

it seems like we were all lied to at this point.. i can assume they will be fixing this .. if not i strongly believe a legal arguement can be made that in the event you cancell the contract they cannot charge you the cancellation fee.

the reason most purchased this phone was for the apps, open market, no fee ect..

just my 2cents

I'm not sure what you mean by lied to and How can we make a legal argument with regards to not being able to store stuff on the SD card?

Does it say in any of the documentation that we can store on the SD card? You can still download applications but currently limited to just the phones memory which I admit sucks a bit but I am not sure that this is grounds for cancellation without fees due to the fact that the handset is usable?

super-duper repost #1000. I have a feeling that until this problem is fixed, there will be a new post saying the same thing every other night, since people dont read other posts that might have remotely to do with the same subject.

did you think they are going to make an APPLICATION that cant even install itself on an SD card to somehow be able to allow other APPLICATIONS to install on the SDcard? o.O

I think playing Crysis on the G1 sounds more do-able than what you're suggesting.

I don't recall anyone saying anywhere that we'd be able to save to the SD card. Would it make sense and make everyone happy? Yes. But the fact that some people assume a device will do something, or have some feature, and don't bother to check it out before purchase isn't anyone's fault but their own.

no.. perhaps not.. but i as well as others i have spoken with were definitely under the impression from store retailers that this device was a true open ended.. and a lot of selling hype on the difference between the g1 and the iphone.. is everywhere.. open apps.. free apps...store as much as your memory can hold.. you can use a micro sd card to store them..

the iphone does not allow for external storage.. it seems at this point either does the g1.. we cannot store our apps to the sd card.

i think this is not simply selling of an opinoin.. it is more like a statment of fact..

in either event.. it is a nice phone.... and i am sure someone will come along and give an app to allow us to save to the sd card..

If you don't mind the trouble of rooting your phone, you can run the Haykuro build from sapphire-port-dream - Google Code

Then just follow the instructions here:

Well, if you were told that by a retailer, then you can hold that retailer responsible, but nowhere online was that statement mirrored. The retailer was wrong, it does happen from time to time. That's why I bought the phone straight from T-Mobile, and not one of their retailers who has an interest in getting you to buy something to meet sales quotas, and may give incorrect information just to close the sale.

If the major selling point, and the advertising said that you could save apps to the SD Card --- perhaps you'd have a case for waiving a cancellation fee, but since that's not the case, it's not likely to fly as a legal argument.

You gotta root, or wait for Android to come out with a stable fix for it.

Has this been fixed yet? I hate that I am always out of memory and in order to download something useful, I must first delete something equally useful. I'm not techie enough to comprehend rooting my phone, so I'm looking for other options. I wish I could just direct apps to save to the memory card rather than saving to the phone itself. They should have given us more memory if that was going to be the case.

Nope, this is the way it is .... for now and the future ... doesn't look like google is going to open apps to the sdcards as a stock feature.

yeah, me too. btw, i don't know if this can help you guys or not, but i've got an app that can save app to sd card. the problem is, it only save the app instaler to sd card. so it still use your phone memory, but at least if you want to reinstall the app that you had uninstal before, you can do it from this app, you don't have to search it again from market.

Save to SD card has been added in 2.2. I have the nexus one and you can go to the application settings and move to the SD card. Not every app can be moves though. This may be because the the transfer rate of the SD card is not fast enough. Or it is a security concern.

If you have Android 2.1 or below, you can't move apps from your phone memory to your SD card. But if you have Android 2.2, you can!

New to Android. Just bought the LG Optimus One to discovered from various forums that apps can only run from the phone memory.

After fiddling for a day, I thought i might have a simple solution for running the app from the SD card. You can run the application installed in the SD card using ASTRO File Manager. Go to the folder /mnt/asec and click your app from there.

Im sure its up to the people who make the apps ,to make them suitable for sd card storage .

Before you download any files or applications using the Browser, note the following:
• Before you can download Web applications, you must explicitly “allow” downloading from the
Home > Settings screen:
1
Press HOME, then press MENU and select Settings.
2

Select Applications, then on the Application settings screen, select the Unknown sources
check box.
• All items downloaded form the Web are stored on your SD card, so be sure you have a card
installed in your phone before you download from the Browser. (Read more in “SD card slot” on
page 11.)
• The Browser will only allow you to download items that are supported by an application
installed on the phone.
Warning!

Applications downloaded from the Web can be from unknown sources. To protect your
phone and personal data, only download applications from sources you trust, such as Android
Market.

You could possibly interpret this as:
downloads from the web browser go to your sd card, but downloads from android market will go to your internal member

which would not be good..
