hroark13 I have a suggestion and another odin possibility, the EE14 with all that you have now but add a generic shabbymod .9. with the new cwm flashable themes they can at that point just add what ever theme they like and they will be set.

I used this (EE14 ROOTED VERSION WITH CWM AND HROARKERNEL) to finally root my brand new phone but for some reason I keep getting errors whenever I try to download apps off of the market place.
I was able to download about 3 apps before this started happening.
Is this normal, anybody else having problems? Rooted or not.
I have been trying to root my prevail for the past week, and though I have confidence in my android (beginner) rooting skills from my nook color and subsequent android platform tablets I have rooted for friends and family, I was lost....completely. I was actually ready to return this phone and go back to my Blackberry, which I loved but is useless when compared to a Droid.
You did, in 2 minutes, what no other Androidly-gifted forum poster has done on any site, in terms of the prevail.
After a week and at least 40 hours my phone is rooted....THANK YOU!!!!!!!
FOR THOSE WITH EE14 JUST RUN THE EE13(ROOTED) in the way described at the beggining of this thread. The once that is done run KMS.zip ExistenceToPrevail.BAT

I am having this same problem. I went into CWM and did the factory delete option but I still get the google talk failed to authenticate error. Plus, it seems that the market app is not updating for some reason either and force closes after a bit.
Update: I went back into CWM and did the factory delete and then went into advanced and clear the Dalvik Cache and that solved it.

so just tried it and it worked great!!!!!!! thanks everyone for making it possible!!!!! tried one click root so many times and it wouldnt take. you guys are the greatest!!!!
I created some Odin recovery images for those who have a phone that wont boot
Thanks go to Interdpth for rooting the Prevail, Shabbypenguin, and all the people who are helpful on this site
THIS WILL WIPE ALL YOUR DATA
1. Download and unzip the file.
2. Install the Samsung USB drivers (if you dont have them already)
3. From a powered off phone, put phone in Download Mode by holding Vol down, Camera Button, and Power button until the Yellow Downloading message appears
4. Plug phone into USB port
5. Open Odin, you should see a yellow box with a com number
6. Select SPHM820.ops file and the PHONE.tar, and PDA.tar in the appropriate Boxes
7. Click Start
When Odin says reset and the phone reboots the process is done, you do not have to wait for Odin to say pass, that does not work
You need to select the phone.tar if you want to flash your baseband verion
You should not have to flash the BOOT.tar, unless your phone is really messed up
I tried this.. http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/390234-clockworkmod-updated-9-12-11-a.html and well Mine was a precedent from straight talk after doing the above it would only show the samsung logo and nothing else.. as his instructions are wtf? you download 3 different zips and he does not explain what to add where so my phone ended up only showing samsung screen...
I used this and it brought it back to life ya there is now boost mobile items on it but it is able to work now lol
I just got a new precedent after screwing up the other one.. How can I make a stock rom back up like you did for the samsung precedent ( the ones at walmart that run on straight talk?)
I would love to have a fresh backup to bring mine back form a brick of needed..?
I used the one you made for the prevail to get mine running ( even though it was slower and said boost mobile all over it) to exchange my tele and get a new one..

I tried to make one for the straight talk users see if this works..
hroark,
You gave some instructions in post 22 of this thread on making tar files from a phone. In that post, you instruct the user to tarball the files on a separate machine. Does the tar utility included in the phone not make an Odin compatible tarball?
nevermind,
I tried running the following commands to create the tarballs on the phone. they worked just fine
tar -cf phone.tar amss
tar -cf boot.tar mibib qcsbl oemsbl arm11boot
tar -cf pda.tar boot.img system.rfs data.rfs recovery.img
should be helpful for folks without a linux system or lost with cygwin
Edit: I created an ADB batch file to make it painless for people who are lost from hroark13's original instructions, and mindless for the rest of us.
Just make sure you have USB debugging turned on and run the .bat
I didn't make a linux/mac version for 2 reasons, 1) last I heard, there's still no Odin for linux and 2) I don't play nice with macs

Hi, when I wrote those instructions I was a super noob to all of this, and now I am only a noob.
I am glad that you figured out that you can use the tar utlilty on the phone.
I think I tried it once, but it did not like the syntax I was using.
Next time I need to back up my partitions, I will try your script out.

hey hroark, just curious, on your odin set called "DOWNLOAD EE14 ROOTED VERSION WITH CWM AND HROARKERNEL" what version is your cwm and which kernel is included? (maybe it would good to label them in post?)
and are we getting any closer to fixing that google talk failed = no market downloading problem?
i just odined last night and got the same problem (also now my home button isn't working, but that might be because i tried to flash DT's a2sd)
update: i poked around some threads and some people mentioned clear dalvick and fix permissions and this seems to help, i can download market for the time being
(wifi problem was user error, disregard)
followup: any chance we can get our kernel versions to appear on the phone? like when you click on settings -> i About Phone -> "Kernel version" or "Build number" ?
ditto for CWM revision number? somewhere to look and indicate which version or revision we are currently using?

The zip file is named EE14_RT_CWM_rev3_HK_1_2_.zip
that tells you it's CWM rev 3
Rev 4 is in the CWM thread
you can tell the CWM rev by booting in to CWM.
As far as custom kernel revs, the actual kernel is the same as stock, what's different is included modules and configuration files. That doesn't show in the kernel version.
Hypothetically, it's possible to add a displayed field in the about screen in settings.apk I guess
The Following User Says Thank You to Koumajutsu For This Useful Post:
The kennel version is in the zImage, which we can not complie a working version of, we only mod the initramfs
The CWM version is actually v4.0.1.5
I can not change that either, that is set by the makers of CWM
I created CWM ports of v4.0.1.5 but there has been several revisions of my port, each of my ports is still v4.0.1.5 but I add a rev number to keep track of what changes I made to the v4.0.1.5 port

OK I'm Rooted!! Thanks hroark13 that was very easy to do. I was worried about the one click and honestly I'm not the smartest bear in the woods and the one click was confusing me. lol.
Now that its rooted i have NO IDEA what to do LMAO. I did get the error for "goggle talk authentication failed" just a few minutes ago. So I assume I am to go to CWM and clear "dalvik" and the "cache" I think that is what I read somewhere on the forum. BUT, where is the CWM? All I see is the Superuser App.
Im gonna do some searching but Im at work and time is not on my side, so any help, pointers, links is appreciated. Oh and feel free anyone to just spell it out for me lol. As I said im not the smartest bear in the woods. When i get a chance i will do some searching and read that new thread about all the steps to take after rooting that was posted the other day.
I need time and help on the rest but I can say this
"ODIN... So easy even a cave man can do it"
So I assume I am to go to CWM and clear "dalvik" and the "cache" I think that is what I read somewhere on the forum. BUT, where is the CWM? All I see is the Superuser App.
It's pretty easy, just turn off your phone, then turn it back on while holding the power button, the camera button and the volume up button all at the same time. Your phone will look like it's powering on normally and eventually it will display an ANDROID_ logo and enter a text only menu with orange-yellow text. the volume buttons scroll through the options and the camera button selects options.
Under the advanced menu is the option to clear the dalvik cache. Once you've done that, you can use the back softkey on the front of the phone to tree back up the menus and reboot your phone.
You'll notice it take a bit longer to boot the first time after clearing the cache, it's normal
