Default 1984kbps!!speedtest.net results after a couple of tweaks

i manually changed my prl using cdma workshop, added some build.prop 3g tweaks and i enabled 4gv vocoder and my download speeds are awesome.my download speeds before any tweaks was ranging from 300kbps to 400kbps and with tweaks applied from 1300kbps to 1984kbps all most 2mbs. Heres is a screenshot.

Tutorial
Tested on gingerbread should work on froyo but will not work on cm7. Disclaimer although all the tweaks listed here should not do any damage to your phone. if you do not know what your doing you may or can cause damage to your phone. do at your own risk.

• Enable 4gv= Go to your dialer and dial ##3282# enter your msl and you should see a data programming menu select edit you'll be prompted for msl again just re-enter it. Select advance and you should see something like this

change home orig.vcoder evrc, home page.vcoder evrc and roam orig.vcoder evrc to home orig.vcoder 4gv, home page.vcoder 4gv and roam orig.vcoder 4gv as shown below

Click home and reboot your device. Your upload and download speeds should increase as well as call quality.

Switch to a Sprint prl
All thanks to Koumajutsu for letting me use his tut
1) Turn on USB Debugging in the Settings > Applications > Development menu

2) Change your "DM" mode to USB on froyo
__a) Get your MSL: "adb shell getprop ril.MSL" (if you don't know how to use ADB, ask for help before following this)
__b) Enter the DM menu dial ##8778#
__c) Enter your MSL
__d) Select USB
To change your phone to DM mode for gingerbread
__a)Dial ##7678#
__b)Enter your MSL
__c)Select DM and your phone should reboot in DM mode

5) Open CDMA Workshop and select the serial port for your phone (In device manager, under Com ports, or Serial Ports, or something containing one of those words in the name, you might have to check the advanced tab for the device itself)

6) Click Connect

7) Under the security tab, Select Samsung (Sprint) for password (Samsung (Universal) on older versions of CDMA Workshop)

8) Click Send

9) On the Other Tab, click Send in the PRL box

10) Browse to the PRL file you downloaded elsewhere

11) Set your DM mode back to UART (See step 2)

12) Reboot your Phone.

My question is about 4gv vocoder. A quick google search told me what it was and what it does. But how do you go about enabling it?

Thanks in advance for this!!! I really hope to improve my 3g speeds, they have been a bit of pain in some applications.

If I can get 1.5mbps with your tweaks, I will gladly donate to you so leave a paypal link

best i think i have seen my phone do is....down 2482kbps ...up 829 kbps

that was when i was away on work on the coast (east) md ...evening time like 9 pm

when i got home a few days later tried again...down 186kbps...up 77kbps

the second time was same time of evening 9 pm but only between 1 and 2 bars of service

why such a drastic change? i mean i think the drop off in service has alot to do with it but ..thats huge

I have no access to the hidden menu because I am running Hroarks Cm7 however I was able to get 2.18 Megs down using the 3g Turbocharger set to expiremental... Prl 60683 (with full service of course) ((and knowing boost full service is hard to come by in residential districts))

go to settings > about phone > status .... If you dont know which prl you are on you are probably on the boost default one... changing to a sprint one (any sprint one) increased my service.. especially at home...

Having issues updating from a Boost PRL to a Sprint PRL, CDMA workshop won't read my phone at all, tried everything like suggested, device manager has two Samsung usb and modem devices listed, only one had a COM port assigned (8). Would connect but nothing otherwise.. Any suggestions? Or is there another way to manually change the PRL? Like some phones can actually just do it from a hidden menu

Mini PRL flash tutorial: (For those on Gingerbread, For those on Froyo, skip to step 3)
1) Make a backup of your phone with this: http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/429867-odin-image-file-creator.html

2) Odin your phone to EE14(Froyo). Which one doesn't matter, rooted/stock, all the same for this

3) Turn on USB Debugging in the Settings > Applications > Development menu

4) Change your "DM" mode to USB.
__a) Get your MSL: "adb shell getprop ril.MSL" (if you don't know how to use ADB, ask for help before following this)
__b) Enter the DM menu. (try placing a phonecall to "##8778#" no quotes)
__c) Enter your MSL
__d) Select USB

5) Open CDMA Workshop and select the serial port for your phone (In device manager, under Com ports, or Serial Ports, or something containing one of those words in the name, you might have to check the advanced tab for the device itself)

6) Click Connect

7) Under the security tab, Select Samsung (Sprint) for password (Samsung (Universal) on older versions of CDMA Workshop)

8) Click Send

9) On the Other Tab, click Send in the PRL box

10) Browse to the PRL file you downloaded elsewhere (I use 11115.prl, Google it ) and select it

11) Set your DM mode back to UART (See step 4)

12) Reboot your Phone.

* Froyo Users, you are Done, congrats!

13) Use ODIN to flash the backup you made in Step 1 back into your phone.

14) ???

15) Profit!

ron580: can you detail what values you tweaked in your build.prop?

komajutsu step 1-2 is not necessary if your on gingerbread. to get gingerbread on DM mode for cdma workshop to read it you will have to dial ##port# or ##7678# and select DM your phone will reboot in DM mode and cdma workshop should be able to read the phone now. and do you mind if i copy your tut ill give you all credit ill just add my info in step two. and ill upload my build.prop so you can check it out.

I downloaded terminal emulator and found my MSL that way. Much easier that way. And I did end up finding the port. It was labled under modems > SAMSUNG modems. But if I have to lose all my stuff to change my PRL I'd just rather not. It was a hassel the first time to do it all because I'm not that tech smart to begin with.

the serial port number is different for everyone. It can even change each time you plug your phone in

GB CTMod 2.3 with Kouma 1.0 beta. This is all I know. A friend helped me set it up. I found my port. It's com4. I found my MSL number also. I Just have to search thru my computer for the adb file and see if I can piece this together, I did however change that EVRC-B and it didn't do anything so I believe changing my PRL will be the way to go. The only problem is finding one for upstate New York.

OK, so here is how I interpret what all these tweaks do.

Vocoder change: This changes the encoding algorithm for voice encoding, potentially freeing up bandwidth for data

PRL change: Allows roaming connections to more towers that are outside your base network. This will improve signal quality only when you just happen to be near a tower that you couldn't use before.

Build.prop tweaks: Makes changes to data encoding allowing your phone to use more of it's available signal bandwidth for data communications.

Another thing that might improve speeds is the proxy setting tweak found in another thread. Those instructions would be cool to consolidate with this thread's instructions

When in terminal use su to get root priv then issue the getprop. it will return your MSL.

Also case may be important with the ril.MSL param
