Default What's your preferred mod for the Prevail?

I guess I am asking an opinion question. I have tried a few different mods, I am partial to CTMod 3.68, but I would like to get opinions are which mod is preferred, in general. Any suggestions?

And are these the only mods available? I'm having difficulties even searching mod in general.

As you said, opinion and taste !! Everyone likes it different !

I like CTMod with Koumakernel and DATA option enabled. But soon, I'll try cm7 and the 187MoD on my second Prevail to see how they work for me.

Here are all the ROM's listed :

Ct mod for me but is all what you prefer, they are all good and pretty much each one might have a problem of some sort. You can listen to everyones pref. or just try them yourself and see what you like. Then run the one you like best.

Thanks, I agree, I like CTMod with Koumakernal also, I guess I just got a little tired of it. I liked MokeeMod but too may fixes, that at the time I wasn't able to do, and Lewa is a bit spontaneous. Thanks!

I prefer cm7... I've tried everything that has been released for this phone but i always end up finding my way back to cm7.

I just love having all the options at my finger tips. It's so customizable and the only bug it has its that you can't send mms while connected to wifi. (But the simple solution is to just turn off wifi, send the pic and turn out back on)

There are just so many options. Virtually every aspect can be customized quickly and efficiently. If you like to tinker, and quickly get bored with your phones appearance, cm7 is right up your alley... If your the set-it-and-forget-it type, you may prefer ctmod.

I have a foolproof 5-zip installation method.
ROM (duh)
Katokernel (oc & governors)
Theme chooser (for choosing themes )
Adreno driver update (faster/smoother graphics)
Banner remover (removes the annoying 'roaming indicator off' text)

So fast, so smooth, so custom

i do like cm7 for its various customization's and how it has quick response. But the rom i would most prefer is ctmod 3.68 its stable and works on point never had a problem with this 3.68 update from the 3.6 ctmod when google chrome used to force close after saving a image or using it after a long period of time. to me they were both made very well but CTmod works out for me

I spent around 14 months on the Prevail and tried every ROM posted I think.

In the end I found CTMod 3.68 my favorite. The Prevail has limited resources and the bare-bones nature of CTMod made the most when combined with KoumaKernal. Also CTMod was great on battery life while CM7 was bad for the battery.

All the Prevail developers - from shabbypenguin to Bloodawn - have my thanks for making the Prevail a thing of beauty while I learned what Android was all about.

Don't forget about Hroark13 - POW-MIA, we miss you.

I tried every rom for the prevail and CM7 was the best out of all of them.I would have said CM9 but we all know how that rom went for the prevail.

CTmod or CM7. CM7 is what I mainly ran and is what I put on the phone for my buddy that bought it. The only reason I did that was because I knew I would be able to work on it for him

If I knew I wasn't gonna be able to have access to the phone, I would have put CTmod on it because it's the most stable ROM for the Prevail Imo.

Lol, yep. Lord knows I've done it enough. I could probably recite the instructions in my sleep.

You chose well. CM7 is a lot of fun and a damn good ROM. Hroark hooked us up.

I actually had to stop using CTMod because it was extremely unstable. For me, it gets to the point where I can't answer calls and everything's force closing. I even basically stopped installing anything new to a fresh CT install just to keep it as clean as possible. I don't know what about it inevitably leads to all this crashing.

JoyMod 1.0 is, on the other hand, EXTREMELY stable for me. However, it has a few shortcomings that are pretty annoying. The default keyboard loves.to.turn spaces.into.periods for some terrible.reason. And it doesn't work in landscape mode with the messenger app. Wifi doesn't work sometimes, and the espier browser is INCREDIBLY slow and unstable. Other than that, it is snappy as hell, beautiful, and never crashes.

Menuet, I got to where I could operate CTMod with my eyes closed, but the only issue I ended up having was my dialer, during a call, would fade into gray and I couldn't hang up or use the dial pad. I would have to just pull the battery. So far, I am loving CM7, off and on it will lag just going to main screen or menu but as of now, no other issues. I thought about the JoyMod but I m not a fan of the operation of the iphone. I may try that mod one day if I get bored and decide to change again (which with me being a girl, that will more than likely happen. lmao)

wetbiker, I do love it so far, and with the tons of extra settings, I have no clue what to do with them cause if I fiddle with them, I'm sure I'll screw something up. But LordVincent has been helping and guiding me through a lot of things. The 2 of yall are good with instructions. Lol And yes, Hroark really did!

Good for you!! When I want to try something, I just make a backup, then try different things and if it messes up just restore back to where you left off before trying something new. If it works out then make a new backup. you can rename the backups as long as you use no spaces. This comes in handy if something works good at first and messes up later, then you can revert back to before you tried that. Just a tip to help out.

Whether or not you decide to mess with your settings, making a backup is a must. That is the first thing I do before trying anything new. Trust me, those cwm backups will save your tail one day. Lol

Speaking of backups, I'm curious, I was doing a backup on my sister's phone last night, tried 3 times and it never completed. I don't remember the message exactly but basically, the boot image wasn't backing up. She has the Boot Animation Changer app on her phone, and chose one of those, could that be why?

its not complete... biggest bug being that the camera doesnt work because we dont have the proper drivers for it. other than that its fairly stable...(a few small glitches that are noted in the op) the camera seems to be a deal breaker for a lot of people...( i know i enjoy taking pictures. )

I wouldn't think that app would stop a cwm backup. I use several apps that have abootani changers and they have never interfered with a backup. Hmmm, don't t know exactly what could be the problem without first knowing the error message

I will have her attempt to make another backup in a little bit and get the message exactly.

Ok. The error message will help diagnose the problem a little easier. Hopefully it's something simple.

Thumbs up My Favorite 2 Mods

I have had 187Mod in the longest.

Recently switched to CM7 (I tried it last of them all, except CM9 which I don't think is ready for me)

CM7b5 gave me working bluetooth keyboard, it's not as quick opening apps, but they run just as fast as in 187Mod once they do load...

As everyone will tell you, try them all... it does not take that long once you have Root, CWM, and your first kernel and Mod installed. (I leave all of the zip files in the root of a microSD card so I can switch any time I like now)

Find what you like best, but more importantly, research first to see if any of the Mods you might try have a broken feature you care about or another reason to try a different Mod first... and check back often, these Mods get updates pretty frequently.

Eventually you will likely settle on one or two mods you like best.

I advise you dig deep and read everything posted about any Mod or theme you intend to try... make sure you understand pluses and minuses, and which Mods work (best) with which kernels and what types of partitions need to be on the microSD card (and what sizes) for best experiences.

Also, if you experiment and try a combination nobody has written a thread about, please share your experiences.

Hope this helps someone.

I'm not that experimental, I only see what everyone else had discovered. So far the 2 I like best are CM7 and CTMod. I wouldn't like CM7 as much if LordVincent hadn't of helped me out as much as he has. I don't understand the concept of kernels and all so I leave that up to yall guys. lol

Well, the only thing I can say about Android Music Players is : I tried like 20 of them........... nothing ever worked right, some were good, but lack features, some had lots of features but didn't work right........

Then wetbiker suggested to me the paid version of PlayerPro ! That was it !! Absolutely fits my needs. ( They have a 4-week trial too ) Tere are aqlso nice themes for it !

Lately I heard that the BSPlayer ( paid version ) is also great, since you can stream music over your WLAN from your computer to the phone !

So, these two are my suggestion

Personally I use a Sansa Fuze 8GB... I can drive from Las Vegas, NV to Seattle, WA and back and never hear the same song twice...

I can easily hit mute if a call comes through...

That said, i had no issues with the included player in 187Mod, other than the same issue they all have, if you don't make a playlist it's a pain navigating folders...

I only use the music player when on foot (like when working outside) with wired in ear drivers... mine don't slip out and include a decent microphone for when I do get a call while working or moving around the property.

And in my home I have a PC dedicated to media...

Sjbstowe: what is your biggest problem with Android music players?
Is it more playlist or song management or streaming to a bluetooth device?
Something else?

EDIT:

Decided to combine responses in one reply...

vce2005: What's wrong with VLC?

Between VLC and the music player in 187Mod I was pretty well set to play local or streamed music.

It's too bad we don't have Rockbox for Android.... that would rock! (sorry for the pun)

If I were not working so much overtime at the station here, I would love to port Rockbox to our phones... it should not be too terribly hard given it's already workable with 9 buttons on a portable DAP.

Sjbstowe:

I don't quite get why you get force closes of your media players...

I have never had a music player close unintentionally on me so far...

(in regards to my Prevail)

What are you doing to bring this about? (long playlist, too high a bitrate, long filenames, illegal characters in filename???)

Just wondering.

It does it with just about any song. Mostly if I go through the app as soon as I hit play, and about 75% of the time through the widget. The way I go through it now is, Go through the app, hit play so it will show up on my widget. If it fc's use the widget, nothing further than forwards and backwards, then if that doesn't like me than, just use the controls on my radio. It's the media player that comes on CM7. Oh, and if I attempt to make a playlist, it will automatically fc on me, regardless, so all my songs are only alphabetical, which is really annoying. lol

PlayerPro is the way to go. Well, atleast it is for me lol. It's a great app that does everything I need it to do as far as music goes.

I use MX Video Player Pro for all my videos too.

I've never had any problems whatsoever with either of these apps.

The player pro is the way to go. When we go to the sandbar on the boat I do a playlist through that with the eq adjusted just right and the boats system is 1800 watts for the 2-12's and 1000 for the 2-10's and tweeter horns and 500 for the regular speakers, sounds awesome and every one likes us to be there, some are in their 50's and 60's and love when we pull up. sad thing it takes 3 good batterys to run system and 1 more for the boat startup.

Sure does, everyone gets in the water and just hangs out, dogs running and swimming around and everyone just having a great time. Only two others have a better sounding system than mine. We take turns though. All is good.

Angry That was my plan, then I realized how easy it is....

That was my plan, then I realized how easy it is to copy all of the pertinent files to a larger microSD card and just switch between them at will (once CWM is in place)

Sure, you have to reinstall apps, but your save folders can stay... It's nice that the Play Store keeps a list of all the Apps you have downloaded so when you install another Mod you can quickly select all of the Apps and chain download them while you customize other aspects of whatever Mod you are trying.. Mods for Prevail have come a long way in a fairly short time.

Now that I swapped in the no-ext kernel for CM7 b5 I think I will keep it in the longest, unless Boost's newest contract change forces me to give up root and mods...

They are going the way of Sony's PS3 ToS now.. No Class Suits, no unauthorized tethering, and no Root access or they can now TERMINATE your service... EVEN IF THEY JUST "suspect" YOU ROOTED or TETHERED!!!

It's the worst ToS I have seen for any phone contract previously.

They gain all the rights and you lose ALL rights other than to use your phone as stock setup and their same limits imposed for a plan labeled as Unlimited... They need a serious lawsuit to restore our rights to Mod our phones as long as those mods don't interfere with their network outside of our phones.

Verizon got in trouble for blocking tethering apps, and I don't quite see why Boost has boldly instituted the same blocks of apps (functionality) that are supposed to be included with Android...

I don't mind a ~5GB/month limit for DATA, but I do mind being told I can not share that data allotment with other devices. I own my phone outright and my use of tethering does not go over their soft limit or interfere with networks on towers in my area...

Also, being told I have to buy a more expensive phone and pay extra to tether is extortion... my phone was designed to support tethering and Boost crippled it before I bought it.

I am off to carefully write a complaint to the FTC about this new Boost ToS which takes away fair checks and balances between Boost and their customers.

Hope Boost doesn't already "suspect" I might be tethering or have already rooted my phone.... that's such an evil thing after all... (I have not tetherd this month at all because I have not left town and had need, and my device being rooted only allows me to use a far superior interface to run 99% of the stock types of apps (Pretty sure radio mods and tethering are all they really care about blocking))

Peace...

Mokee is awesome! That and straight up CM7. If you like something a little more stock related, arearom on androidarea51.com. its only there for the precedent, but it works. Prevail supports it too.
