Somewhat noob with a rooted prevail for about a year (thanks guys!). Finally decided to leave my 2gb for a shiny 8gb class 10 sd card. Everything went smooth (after all the troublehooting, I can't remember which method i used first) until I selected data mode in Kouma settings. Stuck at the splash screen during reboot. Been browsing forum and tips for 2 days and still can't get it to work. Im open for any advice. Running CTMod 3.75.2 and CWM. Fat partition is first with about 5gb, ext4 next with about 2gb and swap last with abot 900 mb. swappiness set to 60. I can get phone to work fine with with "default(none)" setting in KK. but selecting "data" and immediately rebooting into CWM to format sd-ext: stuck on splash screen everytime during reboot.
FYI seems kinda strange but if I pop my ols sd into phone...boots no problem and data mode works ( I actually have to do this and set it back to default (none) to get the new sd working again)...
HELP PLEASE!!!!!... I just wanted more memory for my apps and more ram for the phone

There are many, many advises here in several other threads....... The problem of being stuck on KK logo is almost always a problem with the sd-card or the way it's partitioned ( not all cards like the ext4 partitioning ! )!
I suggest : Try a different brand of sd-card !! Go with a name brand, like Sandisk or Kingston !!!
thanks vce2005. My new SD is a Kingston. How would you go about re-doing it to ensure it is indeed the card and not a missed step? I have no problem erasing the new one. I can always pop the old one back in and it boots up into data mode right away. Just at the end of my rope trying to figure out what I may have done wrong/set wrong, that is preventing me from using data mode

As I already said in another thread, google for "MiniTool partition Wizard" and erase all partitions and create a new FAT32 partition on your card ( one FAT for the whole card) then format it on the PC and then put it in the phone start over.....
DO NOT CREATE ANY "ext3 or ext4" partition on the PC with MiniTool, it won't work in the phone !

erased partitons and formated sd with fat32 format using Minitool. followed directions " How to Partition the SD card" from "[GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail for Dummies (written by a dummy)" thread. Initial ext size 1gb swap 0mb. Stuck on splash screen for 25 min. put sd back in Minitool and it showed Ext3 partition and fat32 partition. I erased partitions and tried again without creating partion is CWM and still stuck on splash screen... Had to resort to placing old SD card back in and setting Kouma setting to "default(none)" again. WHAT AM I MISSING!!!???

Seems your card is either bad ( or getting bad or has bad parts ), or the card is simply not working with the Prevail !! I have also one card that is working just fine everywhere I put it in, but it's not working in the Prevail !!!

READ ALL DIRECTION THOROUGHLY BEFORE DOING ANYTHING! Download Kouma's SDParter for the Prevail From here:
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/567989-koumajutsus-sd-card-partition-tool-prevail.html
Then back your sdcard up to your PC!
Partition your sdcard to your desired settings/sizes (ext4 for your data mode partition/ leave the rest FAT32)
Then setup Koumamod Reboot Profit!
I hope this helps. It's been a while since I have had to setup my prevail.

Well, Skater, I think he's doing everything correctly..... I think it's the sd-card.... some of the sd-cards except the ext4 format, some of them don't !! Hope he gets it working....
( BTW: SDParter is included in CTMod3.75.2..... It's under Settings>>>CTMod Settings>>>Partition Info !! )
Edit : Also, what's strange...... to me ( not a programmer or such ) it seems there is a slight difference between ext4 ( used in the Prevail ) and ext4 used with a utility like MiniTool Partition Wizard...... I tried several times to setup different SD-Cards on the PC with that MiniTool, but non of them partitioned and formatted are recognized by the Prevail !! )

I had a bunch of problems with Minitool. I found that koumas app was much easier to use.

I have never had to re-format the ext AFTER installation... Maybe this could be the culprit???....
Now that you are saying that after a fresh install I have never done that either and never had a problem, now if switching to a different mode after a while I know that needs to be done? Maybe that is the problem and even one guy said when he didn't it worked and was going to try his other card and haven't seen if it worked or not yet!

WELL GUYS...ITS WORKING!! Still scratchng my head as to how/why but I basically started from scratch. Used odin to flash phone, insalled CWM, then CTmod 2.75.2 final (also installed CWM fix if I remember correctly). Went through formatting SD card in CWM as it keep giving me error messages in CTMod (I also noticed SD card would not mount in storage menu until I formatted it in CWN, also cant remember if I wiped Davlik and partion cache at this point but I'm pretty sure I did). Booted to CTMod again (noticed my partions were all there, fat32, ext4 and swap) and changed to data. Went immediately into CWM and formated SD EXT followed by reboot. No luck at all! However I did notice in minitool, as I prepared to reformat SD card to Fat32 again, my SD EXT partition stated "Ext3" not "Ext4" (like it did in CTMod).
I decided to skip minitool re-format while trying something else NVE2005's advised in another thread, re-install CTMod from CWM immediatedly after changing setting to data. But before I copied CTMod to card for re-install I decided at the last moment to re-create partition in CWM and see if I could get back into CTMod and change it from "data" back to "none" to start from scratch in regards to phone settings as well as SD format (dont ask me why but narrowing down possibilities takes alot of experimenting). This time and VIOLA!! It booted right into data mode!!!!! So all in all I:
1. used minitool for formating SD into fat32
2. booted phone and could not partition SD card in CTMod
3. Partitioned SD card in WM (2gb ext and 256 swap)
4. booted phone and changed to data mode
5. Formated SD EXT in CWM
6. Re-partioned card in CWM after I got stuck at KK splash screen
7. Booted up into data mode with NO PROBLEMS!!
I know it was alot of gibberish but I wanted to give you guys everything for your analysis. Will also let you know if I run into any kind of problems. THANKS NVE2005!!!! I'm back again with mucho storage for the apps and a way faster card.
Now, who can point me to the best thread as I want to boost up this ram, LOL!
The Following User Says Thank You to laz223 For This Useful Post:
Well if you kept the 256 swap partition on your last CWM partitioning, you would navigate back to this screen (I'm themed, so yours will look slightly different)
Click where it says Swap Settings to change it to this screen
And either long press the empty text field and navigate to /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 or just type it in.
As for what Priority and Swappiness to use, I run mine (256swap size as well) with priority set at 100 and swappiness set to 80, but your results may vary as we all use our phones differently and use different brand SD-cards
For more info take a look at Kouma's thread on his KoumaKernel, which makes this all possible.

CMWhatever I seey akelot of mentoning about SSM in other posts. Exactly how do you set that up and how does it work. Do you need to select a swap file and partition? Data mode was sucessfull until my phone kept shutting off unexpectedly and would not boot up again. I;m on my 2nd SD card and SSM mode is the only thing I xan select besides the default(none) mode. Thanks a mill in advance!

You need to backup the entire sd card to pc. You will lose all info on card! Then need to use the sdparter in the ct mod settings and repartition the whole card. I use 1126mb ext4 then 518mb ext4 and 517mb swap and the rest fat, for a 16g card. Slide fat to the left and that will give you room to make other partitions and when done slide fat back to rt. Then click start process. (I have 200 apps and all sorts of stuff and data and have plenty of room) Then when done, choose ssm and reboot to recovery and wipe dalvik and cache and format ext. then reboot. Once you get that all working fine let me know and then we can get your swap up and working.

In ct mod settings>kernel settings > tap swap settings then type (/dev/block/mmcblk0p4) > in priority type (100) and slide swappiness bar to 60 and hit save settings. That should be it! As long as you have all the partitions set like I said before, should be all set!

Tanks CMWhatever. You Rock! Unfortunately I don't! LOL followed everything to the T and it doesn't seem right. look at the screenshots below. Partitions look setup right however my internal storage still seems mighty low. As well as the ram, seems low. My apps on "internal memory don't have any icons but the ones on the sd card do??? like I said I'm a noob and this may be the way it is supposed to be IDK?

Need to wipe the dalvik and format the sdext again, everything else looks good. Delete the apps and then reload them after again. How are you restoring your apps?

downloading apps from google..never had much personal stuff on the phone. I copied original sd card to cpu but not worrying about restoring backups. No biggie for now. I re-flashed phone a few times and wanted to ensure I get the setup right.
still the same? onlychange is 2 more apps are now on sd card...wiped davlik and formatted SD ext in CWM (was I supposed to mount sd ext 1st maybe?), should I wipe cache partition also?

You do not want them to be on the sd as in the settings, they would be on the sdext 4 of the sd and actually tricked to be part of internal. You need to be mounted sdext, wiping cache will do nothing to help.
Try this SSM_Wipe_Dalvik.zip , put this on sd card and in cwm flash it, it will wipe the dalvik. Make sure ssm is checked in settings. Mount sdext, format again, then flash this to wipe dalvik and let boot up might take a few minutes. Try and let me know?

no changes. i'm stumped. tried again from scratch after reformating SD and still nothing. did notice one thing: whenever I put SD in Minitool to reformat all partitions show up except "EXT4" appears as "EXT3" in minitool.

I think we have all said "Don't use Minitool"... If you want problems that's what you'll get. Use CWM to do it... If your running CT Mod it has a built in partitioner. Just go to Settings/CTMod settings/Partition Settings.

You misunderstood. I don't partition in Minitool. I only used it to format my sd card to Fat32 when I attempt to start from scratch, making sure all partitions are deleted. I noticed, before I format my sd card, it shows the ext4 partition (created using ctmod) as "ext3." I thought that info might be helpful......

To me it looks like, that some cards just don't like the ext4 or ext3 format...... Or maybe it has to do with the partition size of the ext4...... I am wondering as well, but when ever I got stuck somewhere, I just tried different cards and somehow it worked......Maybe some sd-cards don't like FAT32 + ext4 partition at the same time..... Who knows ?
All in all idont know what to say. I definatelt appreciate the help. I even triedmy original card that worked with DATA mode and SSM did not work... All in all I'm not an expert but I noticed 2 distinct things:
1. after reflash with odin including reformat of sd, i installed CTmod and went into partition setting and the partition settings from last SSM attempt were still there?!! (exact sizes and all).
2. it seems like CWM and CTmod partition/davlik options don't communicate 100%. Alot of thing done in one dont reflect in the other (at least how it appears to me)
thanks all for your help: I had my phone rooted for a year (only because I good at following directions) and in one week my knowledge went from a 2/10 to a 7/10 LOL!
