Default Root + Update Firmware

I went to this site (https://www.wuala.com/Samsung%20Galaxy%20S/Firewares%20,%20Updates%20and%20Odin/Original%20Firmwares/Asia/July/?key=AfzUZSU4SpKU) and downloaded the firmware "I9000DXJG4.rar".

I don't like the idea of using ODIN and I've read in this and the XDA forums that I could so call rename a file to "update.zip" and put it in /sdcard.

I've done the one click lag fix using the update.zip method so I know how to do that.

My question is that does this apply to ROM updates as well?
Can I rename the "I9000DXJG4.rar" to "update.zip" and apply the update to flash my ROM.

Any help appreciated.

Not without using clockwork recovery or something similar, but that's broken as of now.
