do I need to unroot to restore factory default?

no as factory default makes the phones like new- totally wipes it!

(correct me if im wrong anyone but i don't think i am)

i did it on my G1 a few times to clear it out and again before i sold it was just like the day i bought it.

So, I don't need to unroot it, but factory default will unroot it?

I was hoping it wouldn't un-root it, as I would then need to re-root and then install titanium backup to restore all my apps.

it will not un-root. it just deletes settings and contacts and user data but not system data or files

Ok , it didn't un-root but it also never re-installed one of the pre-installed apps that I deleted, so I guess once those are removed, they are destroyed lol

it wont re-install anything it just clears out all your details and returns the phone to origional settings, any app deleted before a factory reset will not return!
you have to re-flash the firmware that contains the app or find the app online and reinstall

Note: re-flashing firmware will unroot

which app was that? i may have the .apk(application) file on my pc

Thanks, was just stating it didn't restore it, I don't actually want the app, which is why I deleted it
