Default Kernels? :O

Hey Guys,
So I have no idea what kernels have to do with my SGS, but I would like to know a bit about them as its the only way I will get to root my phone. Can I flash a kernel that's not specifically for my phone. Sure it might be for the SGS, but it might not be a 2.3.6 like I'm on, its a 2.3.3. Can I flash it?
Thanks,

TechMennis

You can end up bricking your phone (dead)..
But you can flash kernels only for your phone model & firmware..
(google semaphore kernel 2.3.3)
