Default [ROM][4.2.2][JDQ39][03/06/2013] CM10.1 for SPH-D710VMUB

CyanogenMod 10.1 | Android 4.2.2 JellyBean!!

[HIGH]#include <std/disclaimer.h>
/*
* I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, thermonuclear
* war, or the current economic crisis caused by you following these directions.
* YOU are choosing to make these modificiations, and if you point your finger at
* me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
*/[/HIGH]

This ROM is compiled from source. I started with the work of dastin1015 & Team-Hydra, and applied a mms fix, and more suited the source for the Virgin Mobile variant of the S2. I made this ROM so that we here at Virgin Mobile could just flash a ROM and not have to worry about fixing mms or resolving other little quirks, this ROM is built for Virgin Mobile!

Please read the entire first and second post before flashing this ROM!!

Features:
  • Compiled directly from source
  • Kept up to date with upstream CyanogenMod
  • Kept up to date with upstream Team-Hydra/dastin1015 changes
  • Includes a CM10.1 kernel with the latest CWM Recovery

Whats Working?:
  • Calls
  • SMS
  • MMS
  • 3g/4g - 4g turns on and off, don't live in 4g area so I can't fully test
  • Audio - Is slightly quiter, this is a issue with any 4.2 AOSP ROM for the Epic 4g Touch
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS - Locks very fast for me, usually around 2 seconds
  • Camera & Camcorder - Front and back
  • Audio Playback
  • Video Playback
  • USB Mass Storage
  • WiFi

Issues:
  • Any CM10.1 issue present on the Epic 4g Touch ROMs
  • Audio is slightly quieter than stock
  • I have had it drop me to 1x a couple times, think its more modem related
  • Some have reported MMS issues with large messages, looking into this
  • 4g WiFi tethering is not functional, native or 3rd party
  • Dock audio apparently doesn't work, but I can't test it

Installation:
  • MUST USE A ICS OR OLDER MODEM!!
  • Data will not work on a JellyBean modem like FL14
  • Have a custom recovery installed (Kuban Kernel, Agats Repacked kernels, etc) (I flashed from the Kuban Kernel 0.2.5)
  • Flash an ICS modem if you need to (I use the FL26 modem, the latest Virgin Mobile modem)
  • Wipe data, system, and cache if youa re on any ROM besides this one!!
  • If already on my ROM, wipe cache & dalvik cache
  • Flash CM10.1
  • Flash Gapps for 4.2.1 (Must do this everytime you flash this ROM!!)
  • If you are coming from a previous install of this ROM, wipe data on Clock once booted up
  • Reboot & Enjoy the awesomeness!!

Credit:
  • Credit goes first and foremost to dastin1015, not only did he get CM10.1 to where its at for the Epic 4g Touch, he also helped me with my work as well. Donations should go to him before me!
  • Team-Hydra
  • CyanogenMod Team
  • Epic CM
  • Google
  • Anyone who has helped me along the way with my development career!

Donate:

Notes:
  • To enable Developer Options and Performance go to Settings > About Phone and repeatedly press Build Number.
  • Make sure you followed instructions before telling me my ROM doesn't work!
  • Search through the thread for an answer to your issue before posting about it to make sure it hasn't already been answered!

General Information on the VM SGS2:
  • By now you should know that the kernel and recovery are tied together on this phone. This ROM uses a kernel compiled at build time specifically for CM10.1, and it includes a fully functional CWM recovery. If you are to flash a different kernel over it to get a recovery, you phone will no longer boot to the ROM, and you will have to reflash the ROM or at least reflash the CM10.1 kernel.
  • In order to return back to your previous setup with you nandroid you made, what I would do is through the included CWM recovery, flash the kernel/recovery that you used to make the nandroid, then reboot to recovery and wipe data, system, cache and then restore your nandroid.
  • The Team Win Recovery Project recovery v 2.4 for the Epic 4g Touch works marvelous with CM10.1 (will not work with any TouchWiz/stock/Samsung based ROM!!!), but in order to get it to flash you must edit the updater-script and remove all the device asserts at the top of the script, or add SPH-D710VMUB to it. I will try to post a modified version of the zip that will flash when using this ROM. Also TWRP must be "injected" into the CM10.1 kernel image, so when upgrading to a newer ROM, you must either tell TWRP to reinject itself, or do what I do and reflash the TWRP zip!
  • If you are coming from FL14, you will inadvertently have the FL14 modem on your phone. This means that if you do not flash a ICS or older modem, you will not have working 3g at the least, maybe more stuff not working. This is just the way it is for now, so flash the FJ12 or FL26 (links for these modems in 3rd post!)modem, and all the modems that will work on our phone can be found here: XDA Modem Repository! and here are the Virgin Specific modems: rwilco12's Virgin SGS2 Section

Source:
  • All the source for this ROM can be found at my SGS2VMU-DEV github account here: SGS2VMU-DEV Github

Yeah I've been running this exact ROM since the 9th and had ran a previous test build before that. It works great for me. The key board pop up has some graphical glitches and I noticed some graphical glitches in set CPU which was noted in the thread for the epic 4g touch. But all in all the ROM runs damn good.

And now that I got cm10.1 running I am going to maintain it and keep it as updated as I can. Try to have a new release every week if its possible. And I'm going to start on aokp and pa 4.2.1 and get it working if I can!

I flashed the ROM, and everything seems to be working aok. One thing I had to do was flash the android 4.2 keyboard because it kept force closing on me. All in all a fabulous job my friend. Kudos!. Also I flashed the FJ12 modem and all the connections are working as they should.

Another one of the first things that I did was swap the internal and external storage so that my external sd became the internal storage on the device. Now I have almost 30 gigs for my internal storage. It is quite simple really. All it involves is editing a single file.

Sweet. Just like was stated in the notes, 4g a little off and on, possibly my location. Other than that it's looking like a good ROM. I love cyanogen and am stoked to have one for virgin.
Thanks for the great work.

Does anyone know where I can find the FL26 modem? I can't seem to find it on XDA.

Yeah I could not find it either. I just used the FJ12 modem instead and all the connections work.

Yeah I'm going to look into baked black bean as well. And now that I look the fl26 isn't on there. When I get a chance I will make a cwm flash able zip of the fl26 and fj12 modems and post them!

Is there a step by step noob proof installation guide coming for this?

How much quieter is this vs stock?

Also, can somone test the action of the power button, when the screen turns off, wait 5 seconds, then push the power button, does the screen turn on instantly or is there a delay?

And lastly, can you activate service running CM10.1, or do you need to activate in stock and then flash this?

And for step by step, the first post has instructions. Just make sure you have a custom recovery and then install following the directions. And the difference in volume isn't a whole lot, i barely even notice it and its not a deal breaker to me.

And my screen comes on instantly even if its been deep sleeping for quite a while!

And i do not think you can activate on this ROM, you must do it from the stock FJ12 or FL26, and I suppose the FL14 one as well! To be safe I would activate before flashing this ROM!

I was really liking the FL14 leak but once this was released I just couldn't help myself. I am starting to feel at home again with this phone. MMS and Visual Voicemail (though is doesn't update to the latest version) are working great. Thank you b_randon14 for releasing this!!

The rom is very stable but I found one bug while playing with my bluetooth ear piece. The voice dialer will lock up with bluetooth on and paired with my ear piece. If bluetooth is on and I leave my ear piece off the voice dialer will start up fine.

Haha, I'm also starting to feel like I'm a bit at home again. It's been a while too coming from the Optimus with CM7 to the Evo V (had no CM) to this phone. Do you think there is any chance that you could upload the VVM apk?

I tried this coming from FL14 as well but I'm a tool & screwed my phone up by running Titanium Backup trying to get my Contacts back, which I shouldn't have done but did anyways. Can someone dumb it down for me on how to properly get my backups on this ROM? A link at least would be nice.

In the meantime, I'm going back to FL14. I really want this upgrade tho.

Well restoring user apps and data can be done with TiBu but never use it to restore system apps or data when coming from a ROM that is different. As for contacts I have mine synced with my Google account so they automatically get synced when I set up my Google.

And I have no Bluetooth devices to test with but I will look into the issue. If we can get some more field testing on Bluetooth devices that would be great. Maybe even some logcats!

And where is the latest vvm app located at? Are you referring to the one in the fl14 ROM? Because I had tried that one before but I couldn't get it to work but that was in the early stages of my work!

As of right now there are no overclocked kernels for cm10/cm10.1 that I know of. And the touch wiz based ROMs will most definitely soft brick the device. The kernels and RAM disk are just far to different. There may be some custom kernels for cm10 at CDA for the epic 4g touch but I wouldn't swear to it. The development of 4.2.1 for this phone is relatively new so no one has been making custom kernels. I do plan on adding features to the kernel like over clocking and more governors and everything so that will come with time!

Also as of right cm has not added the carrier text changing ability to cm10.1 and I don't know if they will but I will look into seeing how hard it is to do because I believe aokp has the functionality in it. There may be and unmerged commit for it on the cm gerrit that just hasn't made its way into the main cm code base. I'll look into it though!

Brandon!!! You are the man!!
I'm off work this afternoon and I'm gonna give it a go!!

Would you recommend the FJ12 or FL26 modem for me to flash with this? Will one work better than the other? (I am coming straight from FL14 to your CM10)

Flash or install SuperSU if you did. From what I read, that should work?

This ROM includes Superuser, as well as the su binary. Now if you are talking about adb root access, you have to allow adb to have root access through the settings because by default it only allows root access to apps.

And I am using the FL26 modem, becuase I had installed the FL26 update on my phone. Now I realize not only is their no zip for the FL26 modem but there aint one for the FJ12 modem as well. I know I have a copy of the FJ12 modem.bin so I will make a cwm zip of the FJ12 modem, and if I can pull the FL26 modem.bin off of my phone I will make one of that as well. But either modem should work about the same. I am sure samsung didnt change to much in the modem with the FL26 update.

Also note that some people on the E4GT at xda have noted that some of the gingerbread modems are quite good, but as always YMMV!

Once again nice ROM man. It works quite good on it s own, but when you tweak the ROM it gets even better! I heard you are doing the Baked ROM next.

Works pretty flawlessly, I get some youtube error on boot but after that no errors really. I have noticed my battery seems to die quicker, any one else feel this is the case?

I think we used EG30 modem for ParanoidAndroid. Maybe that will work as well for this.

For some reason MMS won't function for me on this build. As far as I can tell, I installed according to directions. Flashed back to FJ12 modem, flashed Kuban kernal/rec, then rom+gapps.

I'm hoping the FL26 modem will fix this. Any thoughts?

Does anyone have a problem where their phone just hangs when calling someone? I try to hang up because the counter doesn't begin and it says hanging up and won't let me. I have to restart the phone to get rid of the 'in call' status. Also had this problem in PA.

Hm i have never experienced this in any of the roms. Very strange indeed. If you could get a logcat while its doing that it could potentially help find out whats causing it.

Also I have not tried the FJ12 modem on this ROM but I'm sure some of the others have. If anyone can comment on mms working using the fj12 modem then please speak up. It may just be a fluke. I would try reflashing and wiping data and cache because i have never had a problem out of mms since i initially fixed it on my older test builds.

This is the one I was using in FL14. The first time I ran Voicemail in FL14 it asked if I wanted to update. This is the version I received. The most noticeable setting is to allow a light or dark theme to the app. I couldn't get it to run with CM10.1. It said there was a voicemail but couldn't download it. While I like this interface it wasn't a deal breaker for me. The Version is 5.3.3.18.

And where is the latest vvm app located at? Are you referring to the one in the fl14 ROM? Because I had tried that one before but I couldn't get it to work but that was in the early stages of my work!
I'd send you my logcats but where are they located? Still learning the file structure of the underlying Linux on the phones.

Yes the one in FL14 was updated to version 5.3.3.18 when I installed it a week ago. I tried it but it kept saying it couldn't find my voicemail though it did know one was there.

There is a FJ12 modem on Rwilco12's site because I downloaded and installed it from here Rwilco12's Android Repository - Downloads

I also want to add that MMS works great so far with this modem. I had someone send me some large pictures and they all arrived ok. Would be nice to try the FL26 modem if your able to extract it off your phone.

Yeah, I tried to update the VVM app on FL14 a few moments ago and it says "General Failure. Please try again at a later time" so I am stuck on Visual Voicemail version 5.3.1.20
Just wanted to share that so it may be known that's its not just an issue with CM10 that you can't upgrade to the new VVM version.
Seems you can only update the app on FJ12 or FL26 at this time?

Tried this ROM last night and everything seemed great, but it broke 3G for me. It was saying 3G was connected in the notifications bar, but nothing was actually connecting in any app. I could only place/receive calls and SMS/MMS. I did a bit of Googling and found out the APN might have been reset incorrectly during the flash, so but there wasn't much luck in finding the right APN, as they were all for Virgin Mobile UK or Austrailia, and I'm in the US.

I did my research, but have found nothing, so for now I guess my only option is to restore my backup of stock (rooted) ROM and stick with that until this kink gets ironed out. I did also try the Jelly Bean leak a few weeks ago, but that was fairly unstable on my phone back then.

Did you flash the right modem? You must flash an ICS based modem as the instructions in the OP stated.. such as EG30 or more commonly, the FJ12 modem..

Has anyone gotten 4g tethering to work? I can't seem to get WiFi Tether for Root Users working. Had the same issue on Wild for the Night.

I was just trying WiFi Tether and couldn't get it working either. Even tried the latest pre 2 version. The built in CM 10.1 tethering works great though. This was on 3G. I don't have 4G in my area.

The ONLY issue I am experiencing is some common apps are saying "This device not compatible" keeping me from installing them in PlayStore. Is this a bug or are some apps just not compatible with 4.2.1?

The apps are Paypal, Shopsavvy, Walmart, and some others. Is this normal?

Other than that, excellent so far!!

It works, but only on 3g, which is useless to me considering how bad sprint 3g is here. (10 KB/s lol...)
