How to Install

Note: Upgrading from v17.0 to v17.1 - There's no need to fullwipe, but first delete the folder called "tweaks" in the Internal SD before doing wipe dalvik etc. I don't know why, it's just the instructions given by adesirello.

If you're coming from a new rom or even upgrading from v10.0 or below, this is a full wipe situation. So do the full wipe -> wipe cache -> wipe dalvik -> wipe battery and repeat! Then install the rom using CWM.

Once installed

DON'T do a full restore of everything with Titanium Backup. Only restore missing apps and app data, NOT system data. Restoring all apps or system data will start to overwrite some of the ICS system files with old files and will crash your phone, meaning you'll have to repeat from How To Install.

Also, DON'T flash a Gingerbread kernel like Siyah or NEAK; you'll crash the phone and have to start over as above. People in the thread are saying it works with CM9 kernels, but I'm not willing to test. The stock kernel is pretty good, but it does reduce the utilisation of Voltage Control (eg min voltage is 200mV, instead of 100mV).

Update on kernels: Siyah Kernel is currently at Version 3.1, which is stable with AndyX ROM v7.0 onwards.

So What Works?

Almost everything!

Okay, So What Doesn't Work?

Non-ICS-based kernels, JKay Settings and GDE Launcher (as far as I've seen). The first two don't work simply because they don't support ICS yet. So if you like themes, maybe it's not for you (but the lack of this doesn't impede the everyday usage factor imo). I think I'm the only one who used GDE here so that only affected me

My Thoughts

I'm an instant fan of this ROM. I've tried 3 or 4 ICS ROMs, and this is the most full and stable one I've seen. Updated stability, battery and pics below.

Day 5 update: I finally got a screenshot program working (2 days ago, but i've been busy x.x) so pics at last! Haven't had any significant dramas still. A couple of non-critical programs fail to load the first time, but then they work fine. Games work perfectly for long periods. All of the critical programs like email, sms, calls etc work just fine. Battery is amazing. Performance is amazing. It's stable and very suitable for everyday use.

v5.1 Update: The battery issue of v4.1 has been fixed. Seems more stable and better battery than ever! But see some posts below for issues with Titanium Backup and Contacts (I haven't had any issues except for one app not restoring).

v7.0 Update: Screenshot finally works! Back to the Power + Home goodness! Also, there's a new version of Superuser (probably for ICS), and a Video Maker application! Obviously faceunlock is here and the native Gmail app. Regarding the Gmail app: If you link your Gmail with your phone, turn off auto-sync; you'll save heaps of battery life! I haven't found the "Bump" feature yet (or whatever the Android term for it is) though (edit: and never will, since SGS2 doesn't have NFC :P)

v9.0 Update: Very stable rom. I had a few issues whilst messing around with programs. Once I restored with Titanium and restarted, my battery went from 50% to 16%. This wasn't a big issue since 4 hours later the battery read 22% lol, so it was slowly righting itself rather than dropping to 0%. There's a couple of new visual features but it's the same ICS as always

v10.1 Update: AndyX has started using Apex Launcher as stock over trebuchet, which is a massive improvement. I thought trebuchet was good, but Apex is my new favourite. It's slick and comes with some awesome tweaks (see pictures below). The rom itself hasn't been FC'ing for a while (except with v10.0 apparently) so it's as stable a ROM as you'll find (I'd argue the most stable sammy-based rom, based on experience). It's a delight

v12.0 Update: It's as solid and stable as v10.1. Didn't get to try v11.0 long enough but I've tried this one and it's just awesome! Battery life is great as usual. The only annoying thing is the new bootanimation. Well, the animation is the same, but now there's a 'AndyX ROM' soundbyte in a female voice, which is very loud on first boot and not recommended for a quiet work environment x.x

v17.0 Update: Wow, there have been a lot of changes. It's always been pretty stable, but now it's getting quite fun to use. There have been a couple of font mods added, lots of new Settings and a few tweaks to make it JellyBean-esque. Very pleased with the newest update!

FAQ

Q: Would you recommend this for absolute noobs to try?
A: Of course! Particularly if they are starting from scratch. There's no learning curve for this rom, just a little patience required at times. I'd say they should at least learn the old SMS/Titanium Backup and Restore combo to save their data however (as with any new rom).

Q: I notice that there is no Touchwiz launcher, so what is the stock launcher like or can you add a 3rd party launcher such as Go, Launcher Pro or ADW?
A: I've found the stock launcher to be really great! Quite customisable but lacking in themes at the moment. There's a nifty folder-create option which is similar to iOS where you drag and drop apps over each other and it creates a folder with both inside! This can be done only on the home screens, not the apps folder. Also if you long press anywhere on the home screens, you can immediately jump to wallpaper selections.

Watch this space for other launcher compatability. I've only tried GDE, which no longer has support, and that didn't work well at all

Edit: After having a quick playaround, I can confirm that Go Launcher works really well! I might even replace the stock, we'll see. Launcher Pro has issues with opening...almost anything (which is what happened with GDE). ADW works fine but it's a bit touchy on the scrolling. I'd say it's a contest between Go and Stock for speed, with Go being slightly quicker I think!

Q: Would you also recommend a nandroid backup of someone's existing ROM before flashing AndyROM v4.1?
A: Well, I would say it depends on the user. Personally these days I go for the fullwipe + Titanium/SMS restore method with a fresh rom install. If I don't like a rom, I do the same thing. I guess if you're wary about making the ICS jump, a nand backup is the quickest way to jump back to Gingerbread safety!

Q: Does it have Swype?
A: No but you can reinstall easily if you made a titanium backup of it.

Q: When will the new version of AndyX come out?
A: adesirello has stopped work on AndyX ROM for the SGS2. Version 17.1 is the final version.

Very nice review Kie.

It certainly seems to have come along in leaps and bounds from the previous version.

I guess I'm probably one of the above. An old stick-in-the-mud!

I like my creature comforts such as Siyah and NEAK kernels, JKay themes and Deluxe Settings plus I know that some of the app's I use are not yet configured for ICS.

I can't help it... I'm old!

My feeling is that I may just sit this one out for awhile until I either find a compelling reason to change or, as often happens, I get itchy feet!

I have to agree with you there ironass. I'm tempted but I think I'm going to give all ics roms a miss until gokhanmoral releases a compatible siyah.

Not sure about this ROM, IMHO, the developer takes the donation request a bit too far which is against the spirit of XDA.

Well sure you can debate the validity of adesirello's laptop decimation story (as the kind and faithful users on xda have been accomplishing extensively) or you can choose to donate verbally via posting praise and enjoy his work! I have opted for the latter

You're starting to tempt me, although I might wait and see if gadget check produces a cheeky beta to test

No doubt if I try this you'll soon hear about the fall out on here!!!

Thanks kie for the fab review. Some good info and now strongly thinking about giving it a go.

I also recommend taking a look at WanamLite rom for ICS (currently on version 7.7).

Other than an issue with Google Plus app which is does not like, its been stable enough with good battery to be my daily driver for the last week. Very few if any force closes and no problems with wifi or data connection.

I stuck this on last night and working great. Only dropped 4% over night.
Now if I could find a kernel that supported BLN and worked with this I'd be happy.
Its a very slick ROM

Assuming you're talking about AndyX ROM then yes the battery life is something else!

If it has not, take a Titanium backup of it, then restore it onto your new system after the full wipe. This is what I did when testing CheckROM v5

LMAO, Anything Android pushes all my correct buttons lol. Like in kie's review apps like the Market were hesitant to work but give it a few hours to settle in and everything is plain sailing. Charging up the beast now. I will report back on battery life.

That's right! Maybe an overnighter to settle in. I'd also suggest giving it a restart or two after the restore (which I forgot to do after updating to v4.1 :P).

Edit: Update 1 for v4.1 is out!

Update log:
* GPS fix
* Fixed Video Editor (AOSP app)
* Added Mod Bravia Engine (in Gallery3D)
* Added all the original sounds of ICS (so you have more options when changing sound of the phone and sms)
* Added Swype.apk
* Added GoogleTTS.apk (Text to Speech)
* Added Polaris Office (now if it works)

Oh look at that! Swype! I just updated my FAQ with the question too... Looks like the limited sounds issue is solved too. Not too sure about the Bravia Engine though...I've had a bad battery draining experience with that before.

Nice overview, thanks. I will probably give this a go in a few days as I've been having some rom infidelity lately so might as well audition one more. I really need to stick with one....

OK, so I've installed and updated. Few things I'm having problems with...

Facebook - repeated login authentification failing then when am in and 'Sync with existing contacts' it inputs all facebook friends into contacts and not just linking ones already there (like I had before).

Contacts/Messaging - every other time I go into one of these to do something it crashes for quite few seconds and force closes.

SMS Backup + also not restoring all messages and (in message menu where it shows contact and start of most recent txt, date, time, etc) the txt it shows is from random date during the whole timeline??

Has anyone else had any of these and/or got any solutions.

Otherwise great looking ROM, impressed so far!!

Edit: Update 1 for v4.1 is out!

Update log:
* GPS fix
* Fixed Video Editor (AOSP app)
* Added Mod Bravia Engine (in Gallery3D)
* Added all the original sounds of ICS (so you have more options when changing sound of the phone and sms)
* Added Swype.apk

I aint restarted mine since i installed the new ROM, only now its telling me to recharge. So i may as well turn it off and recharge it. Still enjoying, Much better than the samsung ICS.

Facebook: Sorry my good mate I don't sync with Facebook; makes my Contacts too cluttered. The Facebook app works just fine.

Contacts/Messaging: Haven't had any troubles with messaging or contacts. What messaging software do you use?

SMS Backup: Yes! I noticed the first time I went to ICS, some sms' from one convo were deleted (all from the receipient). When I full-wiped to go to 4.1 from 3.1, that issue didn't occur. I don't think SMS Backup is quite 100% compatible with ICS yet. It's a general issue not a ROM issue. Haven't had issues with dates though o.O

Glad you're enjoying it!

UPDATE- had to do complete wipe of everything and literally start again. SMS backup now fine bout 20 mins though to restore but all OK.

Not using any contacts or messaging apps ?? - I use whatsapp occasionally but that isn't giving any problems.

Phone seemed fine last night, put on charge when went to bed and noticed very slow charging off mains. Took phone off charge at 7:10 and by 10 was down to 62%!!!! Battery usage shows Google services at 37% - not sure re this as far as u know shouldn't be syncing or doing anything.

Also, not receiving phone calls. Making fine and texts appear fine.

Not sure on signal either as struggling for 'g' where I am now which should be lot better!!

Still force closing periodically, as I said before it looks great and love design and set up but these issues may make me re think and revert to checkRom if can't solve!.

Any ideas and/or help most welcome!!

Have you guys gotten Voltage Control working on this ROM? I can start the app, but the voltage tab is missing, so I cannot seem to do any UV. Is this an issue with ICS or with the ROM in particular?

Welcome to the forum.

Its because the rom uses a stock kernel and you need a custom one which supports undervolting, which I don't think there are any for ics at the moment. Maybe the cm9 kernel would work.

Hopefully someone will create a custom kernel for ICS soon. I installed KPB last night and it is very strong. Would be nice to see a Siyah kernel for ICS!!

We will get them soon. Samsung haven't released the source codes yet, but as soon as they do I'm sure the devs will be on it.

Personally, I've reverted back to v3.1 for now. v4.1 is an absolute battery killer. It's okay when idle but when in use it's like you're constantly playing 3 games at once. I literally watched the battery drop 3% whilst just scrolling around my apps and home screen. I've lodged the extreme battery use with the dev, so hopefully he can find whatever he changed between 3.1 and 4.1 that uses so much juice.

It's funny because v3.1 has the best battery life i've ever had and v4.1 has the worst!

UPDATE: As I posted, adesirello has updated his OP with a changelog for v5.0 to be released in a few hours! It promises battery saving! We shall see It's based on the new, supposedly even more stable LPB rom released a couple of days ago by sammobile!

Changelog
- Based on Stock Rom XXLPB
- Modem: XXLPB
- CSC: OXALP5
- More FASTER and SMOOTH
- Kernel CF-Root fixed
- 15 in Status Bar Toggles (JKay style)
- CRT Effect Off
- All Languages (Multi CSC)
- Added Launcher Trebuchet
- Added Launcher Nova
- NO more crashes or reboots
- NO more Fc
- FM Radio working!
- Added Google Messenger.apk
- Added Samusng service (Account Samsung)
- Added Google+.apk
- Data and WiFi signal more better
- Google Apps Updated to last version (v11)
- New Bootanimation
- And much more...

I installed this the other dayb but Im unsure about something. Do I need to update the ROM regularly?

I'm on XXLP6. is this already an older version 4.1?

I notice theres a v5 now and it's XXLPB.

Should I be installing this?

Mmmmm, now I am really intrigued!!

I previously reported of issues with V4 ;
"Phone seemed fine last night, put on charge when went to bed and noticed very slow charging off mains. Took phone off charge at 7:10 and by 10 was down to 62%!!!! Battery usage shows Google services at 37% - not sure re this as far as u know shouldn't be syncing or doing anything.

Also, not receiving phone calls. Making fine and texts appear fine.

Not sure on signal either as struggling for 'g' where I am now which should be lot better!!"

As I was at work & couldnt do much I just left it on charge with thought of sorting later, well so far have found no need to change after all.

I took phone off charge at approx 5pm, 3G wi fi, calling, txt etc all seems great no problems. Not found anything that doesnt work Think only 3 force closes since and still have 49% battery and have been very active on it. Think it was 69% when I last looked about 10.30 last night, couldnt find charger and at 8/9 am was only down to 62%!!

Best battery performance I think I've had yet. Whole performance of ROM is near incredible.

Anyone trying this be patient as, as I've found, it may be patchy to start but bloody hell does it get good!!!

Now V5.0 is out reporting to be better, faster, smoother, etc!! Cannot wait to give it a go (as soon assite lets me download it )

AndyX ROM 4.1 is amazing, I'm downloading 5.0 now.

A lot of people are bringing up the facebook sync problem, but that's with all ICS ROMs, Google have disabled Facebook sync due to their falling out

Tbh Facebook sync is such a non-event of an issue, I can't understand how people are getting so upset about it. If it matters that much to people surely they can just get another contacts app that supports it?

It took me over an hour! I kind of miss Megaupload!

I installed it tonight and played around for a bit, and its pretty good, I'm not used to seeing that much used memory! I cant wait for some custom Kernels and more custom ROM's based on ICS.

had a play around with v5 this morning. very smooth interface and only one FC when i tried to select nova launcher as default for the first time. my APN settings were all there via O2. market wouldn't connect first go, reboot fixed that. the battery though, was basically counting down before my eyes. to be fair, i noticed a few unnecessary services running, and the thing came with default haptic, big brightness etc, so battery could be tweaked. ICS will be lovely when it gets summat like Siyah.

had a "problem" with titanium which i never encountered before, when restoring apps it would restore them one by one instead of all automatically. had to manually select install at each one, got fed up after about 10 or so and stopped. if i selected cancel install, titanium hangs and the service hadda be stopped to get it working again.

so back to CheckRom again until they bring out their own vers of ICS.

lush bootscreen anim too, is there a zip of it anywhere?

I just downgraded back to AndyX 4.1
5.1 had too many issues - blank screen on call, lots of FCs, titanium backup issues, kept resetting.
4.1 only has problems with GPS

I tried v5 briefly last night but reverted back to CheckRom as I was having lots of issues with trying to restore apps via Titanium. Oh well.

I'm afraid that GPS in stock ICS isn't functioning in v4.0 yet, see here:-

Don't know if it is supposed to in this ROM. It's not mentioned under known issues.
