2. Nothing is lost in rooting. Only the kernel is replaced.
3. Once your phone is rooted you will not receive the Orange update via Kies as it will not recognise your code. However, you will be able to flash one of the numerous ICS ROM's, both custom and official as well as being able to flash the Orange ICS, when it is released, via Odin.
Make sure you connect your phone to your computer with "USB Debugging" on and off prior to trying to root. As it does install different drivers for each way.
If you can't get the COM port open, my guess is it doesn't have one of the sets of drivers. But I'm new to this so take it for what its worth.
The first thing I would recommend anyone who has just rooted to do is a nandroid and Titanium backups.
There are lots of custom ICS ROM's in this forum if you read through.
Changing a ROM is the same as changing your firmware. If you change from a stock GB ROM to a custom GB ROM. Customised ROM's can give you added features and battery savings as well as a whole host of other goodies, e.g. the Kitchen Pro app that is used in CheckROM.
If you change from a GB ROM to an ICS one then you are moving platforms... a bit like going from Windows Vista to Windows 7.
