Thanks in advance

No there is not. To create an image you need access to system files including app data and system data. Why not root?

You can use Kies to backup user data (messages, apps, photos etc..) but this is not a true backup.

Thumbs up Thanks

Hey Blue1k thanks for the tutorial on rooting this phone! I've had it for a while now and I feel like I could get a bit more out of this awesome phone. Also I love seeing that you are still around here helping people that need it even though you don't have the phone anymore.

Hello Blue1k,
I bought a Telus Samsung Galaxy S2 X in the first week of December and the phone was working fine for about a month.Recently, I started hearing a noise from the phone and it appeared that something had gone loose inside the phone.I spoke to the Samsung Customer care helpline and was redirected to a Samsung service centre here in Montreal. After explaining the problem with the phone the person at the help desk said whatsoever the problem is,they will flash the firmware and repair the issue for which I agreed. After about 2 hours I get the phone hearing that the problem cannot be solved and I found that the firmware that they flashed had bugs for which they say, since I unlocked the phone there might be some virus in the phone and hence it is behaving abnormally.I unlocked the phone from Mobieincanada which was working well until the Samsung service centre guys had their hands on it.
After a long discussion the service centre guy says that all he can do is exchange my phone with a refurbished phone and cannot help me in any other manner.I paid close to 700CAD for a new phone which manufacturing problems and was further spoilt at the service centre and they say that they are helping me in providing a refurbished phone which looks physically abused and in no way closer to the mint condition of my mobile.I wrote to the Samsung's President's office and they too say that all that they can offer is a refurbished phone.

Problems apart,I myself flashed the stock Telus ROM posted on your guide onto the phone assuming that the problems with the firmware would be solved. The flash was successful but the problems still persist. To name a few:
1.The lock screen in the phone does not function.
2.If the power button is held for about a second the phone switches off without the standard options such as flight mode, silent mode and turn off menus.
3.When the screen is turned on, the bluetooth turns on by itself and the screen time-out automatically sets to 10 mins.

I understand that this is a lengthy post and is in no way related to your guide for Rooting. Please suggest me if there is a way by which I can solve the issue.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Thank you

Thanks for the guide Blue1K! It has been beyond helpful for me.

One request that I have is... could you please upload a copy of Mr. X's Rooted Telus Rom with CIQ removed? The link in the XDA thread no longer works.

I'm a total newbie, trying to follow what seems to be pretty easy instructions, but I didn't get very far. I can't seem to find the file called recovery.tar.

Anyone know where to find it. And, if not, how do I stop this process safely. My phone says "downloading" Do not turn off target, and Odin is just sitting there with a yellow bar.

The recovery.tar file is the third link in the list of files required from the first post. It's labelled 'Clockmod Recovery for T989 (flash with Odin)'.

Thanks, I figured that out a few minutes ago.
Everything else seemed to go as planned, but at the last second in the backup it said there was no sd card. So restoring would not work.

Do you suggest I just through all the steps again?
I re-booted, but I don't see a "Superuser" tab or icon.

When you boot into recovery do you still have the clockwork mod recovery? If so, then no.

I would just get an sdcard. Put it in. Then boot back into recovery and do the backup step (step 11) and then continue with the permissions fix and rooting step.

As requested:

Stock Telus KJ3 modem is now listed on the original post. This for users who upgraded their modem but want the stock Telus modem back. Flashable with recovery (rooted only).

Thanks goes to Mr. X for creating this modem as a flashable zip.

The last time I used the phone I thought beastmod was dead because Melvin "sold" his phone to get a Galaxy Nexus.

I really liked Mr.X's rom the best. Juggernaut is not bad too.

I use to have Juggernaut, but lost my phone got a new one installed beast. Every now and then my phone either freezes up and none of the buttons work or just random restarts. So im thinking of either Mr.X or Juggernaut, but i want a rom thats updated constantly.

Hello Blue1k.

I just wanted to clarify a few things.
I just got Mr.X's rom, do you load it with Odin? or use the CWM?

A simple set of directions would be awesome, otherwise I would just follow the instructions provided.

Thanks for a wonderful guide.

Hey Blue. Could you PM me with the steps to install the ICS theme please. I was also looking at the ICS Domination thread on xda and was wondering if that will work with the Mr.X rom.

Thanks

Default Flashing ROM problem

I have followed your steps, however when I get to flashing ROM part I get message saying "unable to open location installation aborted". Tried Beast mod and Mr.X mod with same result. Any ideas what is causing this ?

Hey Blue1k

I have real problem .. I exactly do what you warn about the rebooting after new ROM, I used "MIUI_v1.7.29_XXKG6.zip" ROM with my T989D phone, but after the steps you wrote my phone late on rebooting I felt that time that is something happened in my mobile - as a natural reaction I removed the battery and till now my phone is dead .. It is not booting at all !.. Even when I charge it is not responding

What should I do to solve this problem?

God bless you

I'm sorry to tell you this but you bricked your phone. You installed a rom for the International Galaxy S2 (i9100) NOT the T989. That is why it is not working. Flashing something not made for your phone will cause it to brick. Hope you have warranty

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I'm so screwed. I was so relying on that Samsung Galaxy S Unlock app to unlock this phone for me. It worked for my android i9100, but I will be selling that one.

Oh well do you know which is the cheapest and most reliable way to unlock the phone? Which is a trusted site online to pay them for the unlock code?

I have found a root of my problem why I couldn't flash from SD. It was formatting issue. Now that I have flashed my phone with Mr.X ROM I must say that it solved my only complain I had about this phone- battery life. Before I was always looking for a usb port to charge up my phone or I was risking of being without a phone. Currently I can go for couple of days no problem!!!

Thanks for the fantastic guide

Hi - I am t-mobile usa customer but have the telus S2 but have a few questions.

1. I just need to follow steps 1 to 13 to root, right?

2. I don't need to mess around with the modem install/etc.?

3. My main purpose of rooting would be to get the T-mobile Wifi Calling app, does the Mr. X rom have that included, anyone know?

Thanks!

No Mr.X rom does not have Wi-Fi calling. Install the latest Juggernaut rom after rooting and you will have wifi calling

Pm me if you need any help with this.

I installed Juggernaut 5.0 but have run into an Issue with Wifi Calling.

The icon is red and it says Error: ER05 "Invalid SIM card"

Important Notice: Your SIM card needs to be updated for Wi-Fi calling service compatibility.

Note: I had a HTC International Sensation before and had no issue with Wifi calling with the same SIM

help would be appreciated

I am a t-mobile USA customer

Not too sure about that. You might need a newer sim? I would try asking on the XDA thread.

I've been trying to flash my s2x to a T-Mobile modem, tried both the vkl1 and kld versions but I am getting no service and invalid sim. The only one that works is kj3. I used cwm since Odin gave a nand write error during flashing. Thanks for any help!

Thumbs up

I just bought a Telus phone and paid to unlock it to Bell. I've spent three days searching for a guide like yours and I finally found yours!! Yes!!! As a complete and total newbie to this stuff, your guide worked like a charm, you had ALL the steps in there, screenshots to reassure, wow!!!!!

Hats off to you and I'm definitely donating to you in a minute. None of the other guides on how to root your phone explained it as well as you did and I got lost on ALL of them.

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Is there a way to choose something other than the digital clock as an unlock screen?

Question Mr. X ROM

Does anyone have any screen shots of Mr. X's ROM once it's done? I'm thinking of installing it but don't know what my phone will look like.

Is there any way to install a custom ROM but keep things like ring tones, SMS messages, etc., so I don't have to reinstall them?

Thank you so much for all the help on this forum!!!

The T989D is a phone assigned to Telus. The T989 is the phone from TMobile.

You'd have to do a bunch of reading to see what ROMs do what and what people say about them and make your own decision. There isn't a "best" ROM for this phone. It's personal taste.
