I wanted to upgrade to the new ICS on my standard Tmobile GS2 (T989), followed instructions I found on Utube to download Odin v1.85 and the official ICS upgrade, followed the instructions and saw the yellow com box on Odin say the phone connected to the computer, however, Odin failed to write and I got a big fat red block fail on the screen.

Now my GS2 is in ground hog day. Its stuck on a screen thats got Odin Mode in red in the top left corner, with the Product name and custom binary (no) and current binary (Samsung official) beneath. Its showing a phone and yellow tringle with a ! in the middle and a computer on the other side, it says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again.
Unfortunatly nothing I have tried since gets me anywhere, if I hold the volume keys and the power key I get back to the warning page about custom firmware, anything beyond that gets me back to the same screen with the yellow triangle. Kies doesn't connect to the phone.
At this point I would be happy to go back to Gingerbread, I need my phone to work so any help and guidance would be very useful - the Samsung/Tmobile support guys have been no help, they stick to their script and its been a huge waste of time !

Welcome to the forums youretall.
Have you tried with Odin again?
Can you get to recovery?
Check this thread. Is that what you did using the UVLE1 stock file for the SGH-T989?
Atmazzz - thanks for the welcome and the quick response !
I have retried Odin but get the same result, I have also tried to do an emergency firmware recovery from Kies without success.
I basically did what the thread suggests with T989UVLE1_T989TMBLE1_T989UVLE1_HOME.tar.md5
One additional fact, in the thread it talks about getting to the recovery menu, In a few seconds you should be in the recovery menu, I can't get there, just get back to the yellow triangle

Reason: More info
After you have it installed, go to the platform-tools folder, hold down shift and right click. select 'open command window here'. In the command window type: adb reboot recovery.
Hopefully that will get you to recovery where you can try a factory reset.
No devices come up in the list, I think this is the issue, the phone is stuck in a place where the PC can;t get to it, when I plug it into the USB I get a sound that recognizes that somethings plugged in but nothing more...
When you're trying to go to recovery, is your phone unplugged? Try pulling the battery for 15 seconds or so, put it back in then try recovery. Just be sure to let go of the power button when the phone vibrates and keep holding volume buttons.
You can also try the same with Odin. Pull the battery, put it back, hold both volume buttons and plug in the USB with Odin running.
Whatever I do I get a brief flicker of the Samsung logo and then back to the screen with the yellow triangle, on Odin I get the yellow box that recognises the phone is in com 4 or 5 (I switch just to make sure its really seeing it), but from that point onwards I still get the write fail for the upgrade, I have tried both ICS and Gingerbread that your thread pointed me to and both fail at the same point (per the cut and paste in the initial post).
So Odin see's the device in the com port but adb devices doesn't, not sure what that means but I assume it's not good

Ok, maybe the file you downloaded is corrupt. Go to the the guide to flashing back to Gingerbread and try that file. Also, if you can, try plugging into a different USB port or even another computer.
Edit - nevermind, I just saw you tried the Gingerbread file.
I'm sorry, I'm about out of ideas except trying a different USB port or computer. About the only suggestion I have left is check mobiletechvideos. They can fix it fairly cheaply. You'll just be without it a few days. If you have a warranty, see if Samsung will replace. Just tell them it happened when you were trying to use Kies to install ICS.
Pay no attention to the Samsung link. Its some kind of ad. And now its gone. geesh.
Thanks for trying, I think the fact it says Odin Mode in the top left corner might give me away with Samsung, but it's worth a try ! There's somethig very strange going on as the device is recognized at a certain level but won't be recognize by ADB devices and both Odin and Kies fail, trust me to have something unique !

You're not the first. I've seen it happen before when someone had an interruption in the download. As far as the Odin mode, it will do the same thing in Kies so that's not a problem. That's the download mode for both Odin and Kies.
Just an FYI, I got a service ticket from Samsung and took the phone to my local RSI Service Center, 10 minutes later I'm good to go with Icecream Sandwich - thanks for your help
