Default [GUIDE] How to Root the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (WiFI) [Video Walkthrough]

A big thanks to RoboBear, tphillips, Lorddeff07, and anyone else that has helped make this happen.

I try to make my guides simple and straightforward so that the average user can root their device. I show every detail and walk you through the process. This guide is a complete video walkthrough on how to root the Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi with edits based on the issues that some may run into with previous guides. Without further ado, let's get started!

LINK TO VIDEO WALKTHROUGH FOR HOW TO ROOT THE Galaxy Tab 10.1 (WiFi)

◄●REQUIRED DOWNLOADS●►

Just download, do not install or run anything yet.

◄●Instructions●►

This method is done on Windows. I recommend this way as its the easiest. If you don't have Windows, borrow from a friend.

◄●Downloading Files and Installing Drivers●►
  1. Download the root.zip I have linked.
  2. Extract the zip file by right clicking and selecting "Extract All," or by using an extracting program of your choice.
  3. Open the folder and double click the driver file labeled "GT-p7510_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0-Escape.exe"
  4. Install the driver. Its pretty much just Next, Next, Install, and Exit when its done.

◄●Connecting the Device●►
  1. Turn on USB Debugging by going to Settings>Applications>Development and checking USB debugging. Click Okay to confirm
  2. Power off the device by holding the power button and selecting Power off
  3. Put the device into Downloading mode
    1. Hold the Vol Down button (the left Volume button) and then hold the Power button as well.
    2. Keep holding until you see two icons. First you'll see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 logo and then the icons will show up. Let go.
    3. Press the Vol Up button (the right Volume button) to select Downloading mode.
  4. Connect the device to your computer with the USB cable.

◄●Flashing a Custom Recovery●►
  1. Go into the same root folder as before.
  2. Double click the root application named "Odin3_v1.85.exe"
  3. Select PDA
  4. Double click the clockworkmod recovery file labeled "recovery-cwm_4.0.0.4-sam-tab-10.1.tar.md5" to select it.
  5. Click Start
  6. Once it is complete, you can close the program

◄●Completing the Root●►
  1. Disconnect your USB cable
  2. On your device, turn off USB Debugging by going to Settings>Applications>Development and unchecking USB debugging
  3. Plug your USB cable back in
  4. On your computer, go to the same root folder as before and transfer the zip file labeled "Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip" to your device. Don't put it inside any folder.
  5. Confirm that it was transferred by clicking inside the device folder
  6. Power off the device by holding the power button and selecting Power off
  7. Put the device into Recovery mode
    1. Hold the Vol Down button (the left Volume button) and then hold the Power button as well.
    2. Keep holding until you see two icons. First you'll see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 logo and then the icons will show up. Let go.
    3. Press the Vol Down button (the left Volume button) to highlight the left icon.
    4. Press the Vol Up button (the right Volume button) to select Recovery mode.
  8. You should see that you are in ClockworkMod Recovery. If not, start over
  9. Use the volume buttons to highlight "Install zip from SD card" and hit the Power button to select it.
  10. Use the volume buttons to highlight "Choose zip from SD card" and hit the Power button to select it.
  11. Use the volume buttons to highlight "Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip" and hit the Power button to select it.
  12. Use the volume buttons to highlight "Yes - Install..." and hit the Power button to select it.
  13. When it finishes, the last line should say "Install from sdcard complete."
  14. Use the volume buttons to highlight "*****Go Back*****" and hit the Power button to select it.
  15. Hit the Power button to select "reboot system now"
  16. Your device will reboot

You're now rooted!

I had this “mac unsupported” issue trying to root my phone for the first time. It seems that your are using ODIN just to flash the clockworkmod recovery. Can you not just download the ClockworkMod app and use it to flash the recovery to get the same result? It’s kind of hampering everyone says that Mac’s are not supported and its a bummer that that is the case. This would essentially take the PC/Mac out of the equation except to put the .zip file in the right spot to do the root.

Finally decided to root mine.
Here are some things that I ran into that differ from this guide:

- My device (16GB Wifi) would not show me the two icons when holding power+vol down.
I had to let go of them as soon as I saw the galaxy tab logo.
If I did not let go of them it would power cycle as if it was in a bootloop.

Second, when flashing recovery I got a warning about installing a custom OS/recovery and I had to make a selection as to whether or not I wanted to do this.

Otherwise it was all the same.

Mine was running 3.2 so I don't think you will have any trouble.
It may be the latest software that has the changes I encountered.

Default Not working for me - what am I doing wrong?

I get to step 9 of Completing the Root.

my options are:
reboot system now
apply update from /sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

I opt for the second option as this seems the closest to what you describe

I get
E:unknown volume for path [/sdcard]

I have looked in directory using Astro, I can see . files now. Does that mean I'm rooted or not necessarily?

Thanks

Default How to verify?

Any other way to confirm if this worked? I tried root checker basic and it tells me it is not rooted even though all the steps worked perfectly.

I have the same issue. Everything went through no problems, just as described, yet root checker still says that it is not rooted. Any suggestions?

Default Does NOT work

This does not work. After double-clicking "Odin3_v1.85.exe" there is no option "PDA" but there is a small window half filled with Japanese or Chinese text and an "OK" button. I stupidly clicked it. The next operation is meant to start the .md5 file but this does NOT open in Windows7 Ultimate. The Tab 10.1 then hangs up but eventually restarts after holding down the power button for 20 seconds.

Oh, and I cannot send a message to the poster! If you read this, please check the procedure.

If your running the new ics update these root steps will work but the super user is outdated. You'll need to download the updated superuser.zip http://db.tt/RUTH4muK and flash it via cwm. Go into cwm holding vol down then press and hold power down until your in download mode, hit vol down to select recovery then hit vol up to confirm, when in cwm select choose zip from sd card, select the su zip from above, reboot system and your tablet will have super user permissions. I'd suggest going to the play store download rom manager and flash the lastest cwm right off the bat to update your recovery. I'll be hanging around here a lil bit since my girl just picked one of these up. BTW the one I'm on now is rooted and running cwm 5.8.3.1.

This happens if you only extract the odin exe (or you try to run it directly from the zip). You need to extract the odin.ini file to the same directory as the exe.

This does not work on my 10.1 TAB GT-P7500.
Perhaps because it runs android version 4.0.4

Instruction no.4 "Completing the root" was a complete nightmare! Because the Recovery Mode screen scrolls like crazy. I've managed to complete the described steps though. I made lots and lots of camera stills to see which screenrow/choice was selected. This took forever. But I've managed.
Very disappointing that afterwards Root Checker said: "This device does not have proper root access."

Default Do I have to update the firmware before rooting the device?

This guide is 2 years old. Can I still use it?

There is a guide on ibtimes, which says that I need to install Android 4.2.2 first. I have Android 4.0.3. now. Do I really have to update the firmware before rooting the device?
