Angry HELP!! Switching between 3G & 1X!!! (Galaxy Tab)

I have a Galaxy Tab with a data package from Verizon. I (try to) use the Tab as a "Mobile Hotspot". I flip my wi-fi catcher button on my laptop to connect to the internet through the Tab. While connected, the Tab switches between 3G and 1X mode and this in turn kicks my laptop off the internet. I live less than a quarter mile from a tower in a rural area. Verizon has basically told me to suck it up, and they are still charging me full price for my internet service even though it is sporatic at best. Is there any way to make the tablet stay in 3G mode????
