Default Sony Used Game Patent!!

Ok I know this is only the early stages of an idea to sony but what do people think of this?

Report: New Sony Patent Blocks Second Hand Games - IGN

Personally I cant believe they would even think about putting it into the PS4!
(even though I know it hasn't been confirmed that its been used)

It would do so much damage to the gaming industry I cant see how they could justify it.

Whilst not quite "Bye Bye Sony", if they do implement this in PS4 and MS don't do something similar with the next Xbox, there's no doubt which will be the more popular console. I look up at my game shelf to see that at least 60% of my current games are preowned. There's probably a few I could get rid of now actually.

In saying that, look at PC games via Steam, Origin etc. You can't take them back and Valve are doing ok.

Yeah that one of the things that would annoy me most,

Even though it would do alot of damage to the game sales market I do think users of the PS4 to some extent would just sit back and take it,

I mean im sure some people would avoid buying the PS4 because of it (if they did implement it on the PS4) but i bet it wouldnt be as many as you'd think.

If I look on my shelf at least half are preowned and pretty much every new game ive been able to afford has only been by trading some old games in as credit

I bet MS will be doing something similar. They already have a person-recognition patent for their next-gen Kinect. The point of this new tech is to see if the media owner has sufficient licensing to display the media to the people watching it. So if you have 5 people in the room and your DRM license only provides for 4 people, the movie won't play. Or if you're not in the room watching it, it can't be displayed. It's absolutely ridiculous.

As for Steam, that's just a different mechanic all together. Returns on digital media of any type is similar. If you buy a CD via GMusic, Amazon or even iTunes, you can't return or sell it to someone else, either.

It's been rumored that the next PlayStation and Xbox would have this feature since at least E3 last year. I imagine this "feature" will be omitted when the consoles are first announced. I think it's a huge mistake for consoles that still primarily use physical media. Most people buy at least some of there games used, and trading in used games can go a long way towards a new purchase.

If they really want to stop used game sales, they need to make the downloadable version of the game available on day one. Unless they can transition to a digital model like PC gaming has, second hand games will always be a thing. I think these measures will more likely increase the number of hacked consoles.

I'm more interested to see what the Steambox platform(s) is like (price, hardware scalability, etc.). It seems like they may actually be less restrictive than the next Sony and M$ consoles.

I've always had PlayStation consoles, but if they do this, I won't buy the PS4. Case closed. I will be done with them forever. If all of the consoles do the same, I guess my gaming hobby will have reached its end.

Default End of used games trading

It is pretty clear that the entire gaming industry is going this way just check out EA you can't use multiplayer in a second-hand game, and there are Steam and Origin and all other digital stores none of them allows re-selling games and the physical game shops will die soon because this way there are no manufacturing costs and the income goes directly to the publisher no distributors.

I wonder if this can be considered to be anti-competitive practices that the FTC would investigate. Probably not though. Needless to say, I will not be buying any of these new consoles if these features are included and it looks like I have officially grown out of gaming. New games are too expensive that the risk of buying a terrible game and being stuck with it has become to great now.

Just some more info on this subject:

PS4 Will Not Require An Always-Online Connection [UPDATE]

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-02-21-sony-tells-eurogamer-playstation-4-will-not-block-used-games

I dont think blocking used games is gonna be in the PS4...but:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-02-21-psn-games-wont-transfer-to-ps4

Whether all this is true or not....we will have to wait n see once the PS4 launches. Right now....the Xbox 720 is still rumored to require an always on connection for games. Regardless of what happens...the PS finally going to wireless N, the dedicated chip for up/downloads...the PS4 exclusives....the redesigned controller...I will be getting it day one if I can.

If you think about it....the 360 was alot easier to hack than the PS3. The .iso's are alot smaller than the PS3's... I can see MS doing all this just for that. I will probably be all in for the 720 day one too if I can afford it. I'm still in the process of rebuilding my 360 library...have about 160+ games to go.

Good to know I'll be able to keep my gaming hobby for another generation, at least.

I did notice this sentence:

Sony's game studios
chief, Shuhei Yoshida, told reporters that any requirement for users to
register a game online in order to play it would be left to game publishers.
Sony won't require that.

Sony won't require registering, but I could definitely see EA doing so.

EA and Ubisoft. I imagine they will both continue with registration codes for online play.

Been reading up on all this. Not just missing the hardware capable to do it...but Sony is going to a different cpu/gpu? Thats gonna make it even more harder. I am guessing they would have to have PS3 hardware inside the PS4. Or try software emulation. Sony went away from hardware based backwards compatibility with the PS3 quick, I cant see it being in the PS4.

Someone posted this at one of the links I posted:

Quote:
Anything built for CELL won't run on an AMD APU regardless of how powerful the AMD chip is.
That might also mean for PSN games, PS3 games bought on PSN, PS+.
