Default How do I use an SD Card?

Three weeks ago I knew absolutely nothing about tablets - which is only marginally less than the sales people in the shops knew! Anyway, after a steep learning curve (not helped by the inadequate online manual), I'm getting to grips with it. I've just invested in a 32GB sd card, but would like to know how it's used! I just assumed that it's like an SD card in a camera (where photos are automatically stored thereon), but I suspect I'm wrong. I want to store maps offline (from the Maps app and also from Memorymap amd Maverick), and the sd card seems to be a good place to store them. But how do I make sure that's where they will be stored? I've got a Samsung Galaxy 2 7.0 tablet.
