Looks like the Craig tablet is a Chinese device of unknown origin, sold by a pharmacy. Who is Craig? I guess you could try a universal rooting tool like SuperOneClick.

alsaces daddy, is there anything in the About Tablet menu that might identify what you've actually got, like device name, software version, kernel build, etc.? Because sometimes those can reveal the manufacturer and/or a real model number. We might have rooting info for it, you never know.

The model: CMP741E

Version: 4.0.3

KERNEL: 3.0.3+
xcy@xcy_desktop#11

Build number:
7_v1.1_6221_cmp741e_dmard08_v4.2.3

Hope this helps.

It keeps saying iPad. Lol I think its a Chinese knock off. Granted I have never owned one before so I dunno.

Yes it does help, thanks.

Looks like there's some information here about rooting the CMP741E...
Craig CMP741e Tablet ICS 4.0.3 Review, Has Allwinner A10 CPU
...appears to be rather complex though.

I think "iPad" is becoming a rather genericized trademark for when referring to tablets. It often happens here. I knew many people, including my father, would say "iPod" when talking about any MP3 player, whether they were made by Apple or not. Or saying "Walkman" when talking about personal stereos in general, even Chinese school textbooks do this. I would always hoover the carpet, even though my vacuum cleaner wasn't actually made by Hoover.

The Craig is not actually a Chinese knock off in the true sense of it being an Apple iPad knock-off. It's a legitimate Android tablet sold by reputable US importer.

Based out of Florida. I saw that. The only reason I said that was when I.went thru the browser and loaded facebook it asked me to download the facebook ipad app.

There were no download links in the link you sent me. I'd like to try to figure this out because also the keyboard case (sold separately) will not function. Its a bit disheartening for $130.

I've had something similar happen with my Ampe A76, which most definitely is a Chinese tablet from Shenzhen. Did a bit more investigating, and found that the tablet's default browser user agent string is
"Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; U; CPU OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B334b Safari/531.21.10"
It's pretending it's an Apple iPad.

Can you find out what the user agent string is for your Craig. It would be interesting to know if it is pretending to be an Apple iPad. MyBrowserInfo.com (My Browser Info)

If you can't get the keyboard case to work, I suggest you send the whole lot back for a refund, as it's apparently defective.

It seems to be that's all there is for this tablet. There's a couple of references to XDA-dev forum posts. Doesn't look very promising though, thinking about it.

I'm trying to ascertain why Facebook would ask you to download Apple iPad app, rather than the Android FB app.

I've had sites doing it as well, asking me if I wanted to install their Apple iPad apps rather than the correct Android apps. I found out that it's tablet's browser that is lying, rather than correctly identifying itself as Android. Want to know if any other devices are doing this.

Going to... MyBrowserInfo.com (My Browser Info)
...will tell you what the browser user agent string is. The user agent string is what tells a website what device it is, and how best to deal with it.

If I use my PC, I get...
Your IP Address is xxxxxxxxxx

Country of origin:
China

Your Browser User Agent String is
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1) AppleWebKit/537.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/22.0.1229.94 Safari/537.4

Which is correct for a Windows 7 PC with the Google Chrome browser.

Thought so...that's why FB is asking you to install the Apple iPad app, rather than the Android one. Think quite a few Chinese devices do this for some reason. Although my Lenovo phone correctly identifies itself as Android, and not an iPhone.

So how do I fix this and get the play store? It is an android afterall right?

If it becomes too much trouble I may just take it back.

About the keyboard case accessory not working. I certainly think that either the keyboard or the tablet could be faulty. You shouldn't have to resort to rooting or other hackery to get it working. I've seen the optional-extra keyboard cases here, they seem to work just fine.

It is Android OK, however the Chinese can do their own things with it. One thing, Google has almost nothing to do with Android in Mainland China.

I'm getting the idea that the Craig is some whatever thing from Shenzhen of unknown manufacture(see the last line of my sig), that CVS are importing and just putting a name on it. But then they are a pharmacy, I bet tech is not really their business.

Taking it back for a refund, is probably the best thing you can do with it IMO.

Might I suggest that you get a Google Nexus 7. It's more money, but they always seem to work OK.

Default Rooting and installing Play Store to Craig CMP741e

Thought I could contribute to this tread with how I rooted the tablet and installed Play Store, 'cause is stupid easy (at least on my PC.) I used the first link that mikedt posted earlier in the thread. But on that posting the OP dedicated only one paragraph on the installation process, so here is a little more info on the process.
First, there is apparently no ROMs for this device, although I haven't search too much. For a $50 device the Play Store was plenty for me (Netflix, Angry Birds etc.)
As for the steps, first the tablet device drivers need to be installed so the computer can see it. Do a search for: "Drivers_AllwinnerA10_32and64.zip" the first link on google was good enough for me. These are just the drivers, not an installer. So if you have no experience with raw drivers you might want to look up how to install them. (My computer would only see the tablet if it was connected via USB directly, meaning no USB hub.)
Next, find "Rootthat-ICS" off the internets. After unzipping the RootThat file folder find the "windowstart" batch file and run it. (I've found that RootThat crashes upon first launch but works after ending it and relaunching.) In the RootThat menu click the 'root device' button. Simple prompt with only one choice appears, follow it, then wait for the success message in RootThat's output box. Then, click the 'Install Gapps' button, follow the simple prompt again, then wait for the Output box to give the success message (takes a couple seconds longer.)
Done.
I've completed this on 5 Craig CMP741e tablets (good deal at wally world) with same results. I'm new to this forum and don't plan on being too active except where I can passively contribute so my engagement on this might not be too in-depth but I hope this works for you.
