Evo vs Droid X

I'm jumping ship from AT&T / iphone to android (waiting for clapping to die down). Here is Houston 4G seems quite strong in the inner city so Evo seems a natural choice for me. I have decided to wait for the second or third rollout so hardware glitches get worked out. Now comes the Motorola Droid X in July. Can't find a good comparison thread (maybe because the Droid X isn't out yet?).

Motorola build vs HTC build?

Are the screens identical?

Should the 4G be my main reason to snag an Evo?

Once both phones have Froyo, will Sense and Motoblur fall by the wayside?

Thanks for any help with this. I appreciate it.

If you have 4G in your area its a no brainer to me. Both are very similar in terms of specs - I anticipate the X will maybe take better 720p video. The X has a slightly higher resolution, but same screen size (not sure on it's screen type), and the physical dimensions of the X are a little bigger.

xda devs are working on fixing the 20fps cap for recording videos. once that's fixed, video recording will be comparably the same. as far as specs etc go

the Droid X also has multitouch keyboard (not a big deal if you use swype, since it's faster imo)
very very comparable phones. it really comes down to personal preference. Motoblur or Sense UI, motorola or HTC device, huge or a tad bit smaller, so on and so forth

Droid X does not have front-facing camera so videochat would be a question mark. Main reason to snag Evo is that it's just a better, more featured phone on VZW-equal network that costs less.

Froyo should reduce the impact of OEM overlays, but we won't know the full impact until Froyo's released. For now, Sense over Motoblur by a mile.

Screens aren't identical, but I don't think screens will be a deciding factor.

Build quality - well, that's a toss up. Both OEMs have hits and misses. I, however, give the edge to HTC. There's a reason why every carrier is asking HTC to build multiple phones for them more than Moto.

If you have Wimax coverage, you'll regret not having the Evo.

I prefer SenseUI to MotoBlur. I also prefer the front facing camera on the EVO (the Droid X does not have one). Camera and video are not that important to me. If Sprint has good service (comparable to Verizon) where you live, go with Sprint. You will save money in the long run. Also, having the EVO plan makes you a Sprint Premier customer (allowing you to upgrade your phone every year, no every two). If you have 4G where you live, that just makes the decision easier. I would suggest you go with the EVO first, Sprint has a 30 day trial, if you do not like the phone/service, switch to Verizon (Sprint won't even charge you a restocking fee).

Since I'm not I'd rather get the Droid and save myself $240 since Verizon doesn't have the $10/ mo premium data fee. I'd just get the $70/mo 450 min + data plan and use Google Voice for free text messaging.

Two seperate issues. Every upgrade, new 2 year contract. But true. If premier customer (pay your bill on time) then yes. New upgrade available every year.

How did you get that Sprint is equal to Verizon coverage? I know that they have roaming agreements with Verizon but that is not with every part of the US. If you travel away from the cities or to beaten paths you will find there will be little Sprint towers.

Correct. Also, you can only rack up so many roaming minutes per month before you start getting charged.

Verizon > Sprint.

I have the evo currently and i am in a 4G area (DFW). But i will be switching to the X for a couple reasons. I don't get a very strong signal in my house (may be my evo as i don't know any one else with sprint to test this, but i do get full signal when i'm out and about sometimes so im sure it's not my evo). Yes i get 4G... but it's really spotty not just in my house but all around my area, and if i do use it (decent speeds) i get bad battery life and i'd rather have a slow connection with a usable phone than a fast with a dead phone (slow 3g speeds with sprint in my area aswell). I also don't really like the build quality of this phone The light leakage, my screen is rising, and that the damn thing sets on the camera which mine is really scratched up with micro scratches. I'm also looking forward to the OMAP processor as PCMAG just said in there review of the X that the phone beats all other android phones in all benchmarking tests. BUT the evo is great phone and you win with it or the x. It's really just down to personal preference and which carrier provides the best coverage in your area! HOORAY FOR ANDROID AND CHOICES!

The x has far better hardware for graphics performance, its also the same chip as the iphone so better compatibility on ported games. The evo camera sucks we don't have any real info yet on the x. Screens are probably very similar but motorola had ben using gorilla glass recently. Htc bloatware makes rooting necessary. The new version of blur may be the same our better we don't know yet. Developmentally we have a solid group off decs on the evo not sure on the droid yet. Although verizon has far more subs so I imagine it will get alot of attention.

4g is terrible for the battery. I don't see it as a selling point right now. Its also sporadic at best in most areas.

I'm watching it closely. I have lines with sprint and at&t do moving my at&t line to verizon would be easy for me.

Instead 39.99 non data plan, you pay 69.99 for the everything data. Plus you get the added benefit of paying another $10 for who-knows-what.

On a serious note, 4G is so sporadic and iffy connections in buildings, not seeing the value for about another year. Then LTE will be here. A little slower, but more coverage and no building issues like 4G. Not to mention it is a sim card standard being adopted around the world in most places.

True, but some people would rather have 3G almost everywhere and pay the $20 more per month, rather than mainly 1X speeds, unless mainly in a metro area. That said, if you do not travel much and have 3G where you live and hang out with using Sprint, different situation

Just looked at the Engadget first hands on video of the official release on the X... The screen transfers don't look as snappy as they did on the pre release preview, and they also have HDMI... So does that mean they'll get the same POS frame rate cap as us? Not sure how the official will hold up on video capture either... The EVO is pretty bad for video capture, even though it's just a phone, either do it better, or not at all really...

The X is quite a bit bigger in a bad way... IMHO, the EVO can be bigger still as long as it is 90% screen like it is now... The X has a lot of bezel and dead space... That's size I can do without... To me the EVO is no where near big... So size is a draw, but I would hate any more dead space (a la iphone)...

The resize-able widgets are a nice touch, though they look just plain and dull on the X...

No 4G support for X so if you have it, flaunt it... I still don't think it's a make or break deal tho...

The hardware button for camera on X seem to give picture takers trouble due to the slow shutter speeds, so that's to be seen in real world tests... My EVO picture taking experience is still on the fence as blurry pics are still prevalent...

Multitouch keyboard FTMFW! Swype maybe, but multitouch on X is so pwnx0rz... I can't type worth a damn on the EVO and I've tried a few different keyboards already including the IME mod... I type way too fast and keys don't get pressed on the EVO especially space bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111!!!1 (average 30WPM 100% accuracy)

The 30FPS thing really didn't hit me until recently when I tried to run some other games outside of 3D Homerun Battle... It is just pathetically slow... I can tolerate 3D HRB only because I played it first on the iPhone3G and it was even slower... However, the biggest downside for me now is the keyboard and the 30FPS on the EVO... I think the X will be most advantageous to my eyes in that respect...

The capacitive buttons on the EVO sometimes gets annoying... You can too easily hit them by just holding the phone wrong... Not a huge detraction, but it is a concern... However I have ALL PRO about not having a trackpad / ball...

Still, if I have to choose a phone again, I'd probably still go with the EVO... The looks, the functions, the speed (outside of FPS) is amazing... Build quality on mine is ok... I am waiting for a light leak (into display not bottom) replacement, but I have no separation, grounding issues, tin can speaker, battery anywhere from 5 hours non stop to 16 hours with light use... (My light use is heavy from what I've been reading...)

I'm not comparing values right here. I'm just answering the guy's question about the $30 smartphone plan Verizon charges. He's under the impression that Sprint doesn't charge extra for a smartphone plan. In fact they charge the same amount but they throw in free text messaging in the package.

On the point of value, this $10 EVO fee had me actually going to a att store today to see if I can get iPhone 4 today. Too bad the lines were longer than a Black Friday sales event. I figure at the price point I could get a iPhone for the same or a little cheaper price.

NO! it's already been confirmed it doesn't have that cap. infact it benchmarked highest in all tests including GPU!

BTW, my house reception is horrible... I can have anywhere from 3% - 4% TWS at home, but outside i'm 4 - 5 bars easy... At work I'm fine too... My old phone had 0% (old sanyo flip phone) no matter where I was... So this new phone is inferior at least to me in that respect too...

In my case, Sprint charges $170 for my 4 lines, but gives me a 25% business discount so it's $127.50, plus $10 each for 2 EVOs, but the other 2 are Androids too. So total for 4 smart phones is $147.50.

Verizon had a $110 package that was discounted 8%(woohoo) then add $30 for 3 more lines. $30for family navigator on 3 lines. $10 for web usage for an EnvTouch(mandatory they said, even though we didn't use the web). $30 for my Incredible android. I am $200 for 1 smart phone. If we got 3 more, it would be $290. With Sprint on 4 smart phones and family locator it is under $150.

Someone at the release event specifically stated that data on the X is really unlimited.
