I'm new to this forum, so Hey :D

I'm after some help

I am able to upgrade now and im thinking about jumping ship to Android. I currently have a Blackberry Storm2, i absolutely love the S2 but unfortunately the OS is so far behind everything else on the market and its sooo buggy! A while back i did have a HTC magic but i hated it as there was so much missing from it as in features/specs. I Have a few questions about the Desire if someone wouldn't mind trying to answer (most are biased from using the magic)

1) Do you get push email (I use gmail)

2) are you able to bluetooth pictures etc between phones?

3) are there any niggles about the phone or anything missing from it as in features?

4) Are you able to change ringtone/SMS/MMS/Email/Cnectd/Messenger tones to any MP3 you want?

Is there any previous Storm2 or other blackberry users which have jumped to the Desire? If so do you miss anything/how are you finding it.

Thanks

Push email - Not 100% sure but I think so! I have my PC set to check for emails every 5 minutes and my phone tells me about my email before my PC does.

Bluetooth pics, music, etc - yes.

There's no way of making a facebook contact picture update, it just seems to happen randomly.

You can change your phone ringtone to anything you want, but there's a limited amount of tones for everything else. You can download apps that let you change tones for the others though :)

Awesome thanks guys for the very quick answer :) I have post the same question on 2 forums and not 1 answer this forum rules!! :D As the the app to let you choose different sms tones ect is there a favorite out there? Just incase i do switch.. tbh the way it is an the moment i probably will be :D

Charging my phone each date wont be anything new, i have to do that with my Bb Storm2. TBH it doesn't even last a day!!

Looking over the internet, the USA have just got the Evo which seems a very high spec phone. Are there any plans of new HTC devices coming out soon within June/July?

Thanks again :)

Edit: One thing i did forget to ask, can you have multiple apps running and switch between them like on BB's?

the evo, incredable, desire and n1 are all fairly close in terms of hardware grunt i think and i wouldnt hold ur breath for them becoming available here.

android has full multitasking so yeah, internet, music, google maps, meebo all going at the same time etc.

check out appbrain (app and website) for an easy way to look at the most popular apps for each section.

also for trimming ringtones check out ringdroid (for some reason songs copied from itunes cant be trimmed but regular mp3s can just using the OS's trim function)

the desire is the best of the bunch for europe atm and the near future.

Over the years (I'm an old git) - I've had; Psion series 5, Compaq ipaq, XDA 2, XDA mini s, N82, Iphone 3gs, N97, Hero and Desire. Amongst a few others. I can honestly say the Desire is the best device I've had.
Niggles? Speaker could be better - would love the N8's stereo speakers, storing apps on storage card needs to happen today, and maybe a better email client built in. That, and compass mode in google maps needs to work.
Apart from that, I'm delighted with the screen, contacts sync, widgets, graphics, speed and reliability.
There will be a Desire device with hardware keyboard soon - HTC Vision. That would be the perfect device for me. Well, that with a larger sensor. And HDMI out. Oh let's face it - I'm a phone whore who will always want better than I have! :D

Thanks for you replies again :)

I have just thought of something reading another thread. My main email is a @sky.com account which is ran by google. Will i be able to use that email on my phone? I know there are a few problems with Gtalk and you can only use @gmail.com accounts. Can i actually have my phone setup for my sky email account but use my gmail.com account only for gtalk?

apologies for any confusion :D

Thanks :)

Hello again :)

I have just thought of another question (no point making a new thread is there:p)

With regards to the HTC Desire which i am thinking about getting will this be replaced quickly as in is there a rumored better device due out soon as i dont want to upgrade to a piece of kit which is old soon as i get it.

thanks :)

there are vauge rumours about a new device but nothing substaintial with any kind of date attached. At least from HTC

i wouldnt worry about ur smart phone being ''old'', tech always gets surpassed fast.

However the desire is a very good bit of tech and will be fine for a few years yet.

Im on a 2 year contract on my desire, started about a month and a half ago i think, and im pretty sure ill keep it to the end.

there are always new devices coming out all the time, but i have to say am more than happy with my desire yes there will probably be a better phone out in six months time but with the things this one is capable of i wouldn't worry to much.

as for the ringtones/notifications, i second what Niir said about ringdroid this app will find all the mp3s etc in your phone and allow you to select which section of the song you would like as the notification and apply it to whichever you want to change

I like the camera too, i did have a an LG renoir and iPhone prior to getting the desire and the renoir beat the iPhone no doubt with the camera but when comparing to the desire its harder the renoir was 8mp with an xenon flash while the desire is 5mp with LED flash(if am correct)

it still takes superb pictures, dont expect to be winning any photoshop competions with this camera but its very good, if you get one download the camera illusion app(try the chalk affect) its great fun

Hi, I just got my Desire last Friday and have to say it's the best phone I've ever had. The 4G Evo and the Incredible have virtually the same specs as the Desire but I heard that HTC will be bringing out the HTC Scorpion which will run a 1.5GHz processor but I have no idea when it will be out. Take the plunge and get the Desire you will not be disappointed!

This is the best device out there right now bar none. Technology advances though, and better handsets will launch soon after this. If you worry about that, then you will likely never get a top of the line device, as you'll always be waiting for a better device- either that or you buy every new device as it launches, and always have the best....
Have heard about an HTC Vision handset which is the same as a Desire but with a full QWERTY hardware keyboard, and the aforementioned Scorpion, but neither of these have a release date yet, nor have they been confirmed by HTC.
You will not be disappointed with the Desire anyway that you look at it.

Thanks

Former blackberry bold (9000) user. I miss the keyboard for sure, but I knew I would. I just wanted something slick and now I have it.

I do miss the notifications for facebook that I had with the BB. Notifications are pretty poor, but the emails still come in so its not the end of the world.

I like the way that I can actually turn off the desire, unlike the bold where you pressed power and it went into a fake off state. Justa little knock and it would come baack on.

I find the android OS much more customisable and much slicker.

A lot of it is just a case of getting used to the different way of using the phone and navigating. Not unlike blackberry, you sill need a whole host of 3rd party apps to make the phone work the way you want it too.

Some apps that I took for granted as being available on android (that I had on BB) are still in beta phase so still waiting for some improvements there.

The desire's battery life is about the same (if not a little lower) than the bold, so its nothing hugely new, bbut its still a slight disappointment to me. That said, I don't mis BIS at all. My Push email always took upto 15 minutes like any pop3 / imap none push, so being able to use the gmail client built in and get instant emails is great. I have to use HTC mail too though, as gmail app doesn't allow all file extensions to be saved to SD card. Like .pdf's for example.

Also, people complain about app space on the desire and that unless rooted or android 2.2, you are stuck with this limit. This limit is more than that of the bold though.

Hope that helps. I'll add as and when I have more to say.

Edit> Facebook birthday calendar. Very useful on blackberry. Website exists focal to import to Google calendar but didnt work for me

You should eb able to link the contact entries together. If you view a contact using the 'people' program that comes on the phone, top right of the contact details is a 'link'. Just have to link em all up!

I did it before i got the phone as it was a pain on my hero before hand. In that case i exported my contacts to a file, imported into google mail contacts and sorted them out there.

Took a bit to do but was well worth it as it's all tidy on the phone and in googlemail now!

People/Menu/View then deselect Sim card. I have Google and Only contacts with phone number selected.
