Will the droid X get 2.2 before the incredible?

Says X is getting it next month. I'm thinking about picking up this phone solely because of froyo and it seems the inc is getting kicked under the rug and loosing support as if verizon has given up on it favor of its favorite brand Motorola. There isn't even official tv cables or a dock for the incredible yet and the x is getting one launch.

I am in the same situation as you. I think I am going to eat the $35 restocking fee and wait two weeks with my old dumbphone for the Droid X solely because of support and because the homebrew community is potentially huge.

I will fight tooth and nail if they drop support for the incredible this year. And I won't trust HTC if they can't somehow keep getting us updates for at least a year (a la samsung's behold situation; i would keep away from the galaxy s for that sole reason.. and that boring iphone interface).

Apparently you haven't read about the 2.1 update scheduling for the Motorola Droid?? (And if you have no clue what I'm referencing here, search around the Droid 2.1 update threads, and you might find out that Motorola's track record of following Android updates is, well.. lets just say terrible is an understatement)

Please re-read the post. If you didn't understand the reference, then search this forum for threads related to the Motorola Droid being updated to 2.1 once that "schedule" was released (and trust me, it gets ugly). You will be extremely enlightened on how this process works afterwards. (Not to mention that the link I posted says August, which is the guestimated time for the Incredible's updates as people have been speculating, so no I don't see any "throwing under" of my Incredible)

I think that the Droid X will get 2.2 first. It would be hard for Motorola and Verizon to announce the Droid X to the world and say that it will be getting 2.2 later this summer, just to tell everyone that they were kidding. They have too much riding on it now. I'm sure that Motorola has been already working on 2.2 with their flagship device. Certainly "later this summer (which ends on September 22nd" is better than "2nd half of this year (which ends on December 31st".

While I too want Froyo on my Inc, am I the only one who is still quite happy with 2.1?

Yes Froyo is faster and has some nice bells and whistles...the Inc is by no means a slug at its current state.

As of now I am trusting of HTC and don't think Froyo is more than a few months away. I could be wrong but I'm not tossing and turning at night awaiting its release.

The Inc. is still backordered which means it is a hit. I can't see Verizon/HTC just abandoning the Inc.

Personally, I love my Inc. and find new uses for it on a weekly basis. Will Froyo enhance it? Sure! But on the same note, I not too angry even if the X gets it before us.

xda-developers.com is primarily enthusiasts for HTC devices. If you've ever owned a Windows Mobile phone, then you know what this community is capable of and the ROMs they churn out. There will be no shortage of homebrew for any high end HTC device as long as xda-developers is around.

I'm not holding my breath, but I expect it to be better than AT&T or any update for a Samsung phone. That's how low my expectations are.

The Incd will get 2.2, I have no doubt. I can see the same thing happening as the HTC Eris... Leak_1 v2.2, Leak_2 v2.2, Official_Leak_OTA v.2.2.... then complaints that it'll never OTA.. then finally an OTA with everyone saying they like v.2.1 better (=

Nope. It was due to how Motorola handled the OTA. They couldn't work the kinks out to begin with, and when they thought they did, they couldn't release it because of some host/server issues that were unable to handle the load. When they did finally release it, they realized it wasn't fully working and still had bugs, so they had to pull it back (hence the tiered release). I believe the ETA on their 2.1 update and the ACTUAL date they got it was almost 3 weeks apart(if not more, I can't remember the specifics since I don't own a Droid)

And Moto also had the accidental release of an update for the Cliq that was still in Beta (or Alpha), and bricked quite a few phones. Granted that was probably a shared mistake between them and tmobile, but it paints a picture.

From HTC-Verizon's perspective, it certainly makes sense, given the shipping delays, to lessen their focus on the Incredible, since it will quickly lose pricing power (read: already has) as the Moto X and "Scorpion" get released/leaked/rumored/etc. Had HTC had its production ducks in a row with the Incredible at launch, there would be double the number of devices already out there in users hands, but Samsung couldn't get the screens out there and now those users who are ready to jump on a hot new Android phone are already losing interest in the Incredible in favor of Moto X and other rumored devices.

That said, I don't see why the Incredible wouldn't get software updates along with the rest of HTC's lineup as the make their NonSense UI play nice with the latest and greatest desserts from Google.

Ditto. The best idea for these types of electronics is to pick up the second best thing on the market. Right now, that'd be the Incredible, when compared to either the Evo or X. That way you're not operating on some fanboy-level of delusion about how sweet your ride is, when any idiot could have told you that a better version would be out in a couple months. It's an issue that Apple doesn't have to deal with because treat every edition of their phone like Moses coming down from Mt Sinai. Truly, over the first year you have the iPhone, you're buying 60% delusion and 40% reality, and even if you're willing to pay through the nose to upgrade, there aren't the same opportunities as there are with Android.

Bottom line is that if you wait for the X to come out, you'll get a pretty sweet deal on the Incredible, which will still be a great phone when you're up for a discount again.

It has been confirmed that the Incredible and Evo will be getting 2.2. The only speculation is when, with Q3 (My Eris friends will laugh at this) as the projected time frame.

There's been some "leaked Verizon document" roaming around out there that has the Incredible listed on the same phase-out schedule the Eris. So, if the schedule is accurate (somewhat doubtful), it's likely that HTC has a few new models schedule to replace them before the end of the year. My guess is that the shipping delays have been playing heavily into the Incredible's schedule.

There has been exactly one blurry, incomplete picture of some document, where a portion says closeout/phaseout, but with no other context, and no dates or SKU's. There is no schedule, there is no other info past that one craptacular photo, which other places took and ran with..

Why would they drop the DInc? There will be three flagship Droids at VZW, that all play to a particular crowd.
Droid X - Technophiles. Highest specs, biggest screen. (Note the Biggest screen)
Droid 2 - Hardware Keyboard, nuff said.
Droid Incredible - Still pretty hot specs, smaller form factor. Not everyone wants a mini-tablet in they're pocket. I personally love the size of the DInc, and I'm not all that sure I would like an Evo or X, simply due to pocket-space...

I just came back from the Verizon store (had to get a new USB for my wife's Eris). The employee there confirmed for me that the Eris is indeed done. No more will be sold (except for any that might still remain in an actual store). She also stated that, in regards to the Incredible, the discussions have been that once the Droid 2 and Droid X are made available no more new Incredibles will be sold. Any that are on back-order will still be honored. This is not official, but she told me there have indeed been discussions amongst the Verizon brass to get rid of the Incredible.

I work for Verizon. It was from the SKU change. We haven't been able to sell the damn things in over a month because we can't get any in stock in the store. So NO, it is not being phased out yet. There you have it. You're dumb for thinking they would scrap a phone before it had a chance to hit its peak.

Who knows whether there is any truth to either statement. There was another saying Verizon is getting rid of HTC phones completely...too many issues.
