Low on Space notification

I have a low on space notification, and have been noticing that my Eris is moving very slowly and has to reload the home screen more and more often. I have plenty of space on my SD Card, but my phone storage space is low.
How do I figure out what stores on the phone instead of the SD card and how do I clear it out?

What's your app count? Do you have any with really large memory footprints?

One thing to try is clearing some cache, like internet browsing cache:

1. First go to Settings -> SD card & phone storage and note the "Available space" at the bottom

2. Then go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Internet -> Clear cache button

Note: you can do this with other applications too (search for ones with very large values (in MB) listed in the page where all of the applications are listed); I don't advise to any "Clear data" unless you have a good reason to (anyone know of any?).

3. Check your memory again like in step #1

4. Is the phone any more responsive?

By the way, there are several cache cleaners out in the Market (several are paid apps)--you'd be best advised to search these forums for other folk's recommendations regarding what works best.

Hope this helps.

Are you into a lot of multimedia? Songs, videos, pics etc..

Some folks use the Eris and other phones in a similar manner that they might use an iPod or other multimedia specialized device.

I deleted a bunch of pictures, cleared my caches and that seemed to help a little bit. Then I uninstalled a few apps that I never use and that made a bigger difference.
I guess my question now is why do apps affect the storage on my phone so much. Shouldn't they be saved to my SD card, which still has over 2gb of free space?

Yes they "should", but without root privileges, they don't normally.

Would I sound like an idiot if I asked what root privileges are?

Not at all. A basic explanation would be root=having "super user" access on your phone, similar (but not exactly) like having root access on a Linux box, or Administrator rights on a Windows PC. With this access you have the ability to have expanded/extended control over your phone/features/operations/applications. It requires some modifications to the phone, and there are some prerequisites that your phone must meet. There is a sub-forum here you may like to peruse.

*I hope I didn't just butcher an explanation*
