Droid Backup

Closest thing I have found is Titianium Backup. I then copy the backup folder to my desktop as an extra layer of safety. I have wiped my sd card and then restored my backup to it and it worked so I guess it would work if you had to replace your phone but I haven't had to try anything that drastic so i can't say that for sure. It saves your data as well as your application so it is quite a nice app if you haven't tried it. The paid version is well worth the expense. It is the only app I can honestly say that about.

you can back up your apps using astro file manager, i know you can do that without being rooted.

Yep. Just not everything. I wanted a complete backup so I rooted. You might not need that though. Go with what you need.

That is true. Sounds like the OP will need to root to get the back ups that they want. Rooting is not a bad thing though. Can't wait to see what CM6 brings.
