Ah, confirmation finally! Well, it looks like I will definitely be rooting now.

That is a big shame. Sprint still sells our handset and it would be nice if they continued to support it. However, I am not surprised by this news. I hope that we get a stable Android 2.2 ROM soon!

I am pretty sure you can reinstall the original (version .5) Android 2.1 update. Then you will have the ability to root your Sprint HTC Hero again.

I have not done the OTA update (version .6) yet but I might for the dialer lag. I cannot wait for a stable Android 2.2 ROM.

Sorry, but I beg to differ. My friend recently got the OTA update and he has reported marked improvement in the dialer lag.

Perhaps it is a placebo effect for some, but I messed with his Sprint HTC Hero a week after he applied the update and the lag is all but nonexistent. I am sorry you are still experiencing the lag though.

Today Sprint announced that the Evo 4g would be recieving the 2.2 update, the Samsung Moment and HTC Hero would not. Unfortunate =(

It looks like EVO 4G users will soon have one more thing to smile about, as Sprint has just announced that an Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) upgrade will indeed be coming to the "superphone."

With the Android 2.2 upgrade, customers can expect improvements to include the following benefits: updates to user interface, improved EAS Support, improved browser performance, including Flash 10x Support, voice dialing over Bluetooth and application storage on external memory.
No word on a timeframe yet, but you'll know as soon as we do -- promise.

Update: According to this tweet from the carrier: "HTC EVO will be updated to Android 2.2; Samsung Moment & HTC Hero will not. Future devices launching w/ 2.1 will be also be updated to 2.2."

Still sounds to me like this was a calculated move by Sprint. They release a buggy 2.1 just before 2.2 is announced. Then they inform us that we will be stuck with our defective upgraded OS just as Evo comes out to make us want to upgrade.

I dont know why people are getting all mad about the Hero not getting Froyo. We were lucky enough to get 2.1 when our phone doesnt support all the 2.1 features. I love my hero the way it is right now, but for most people all they do is complain abiut the 2.1 update and when even if the hero would be getting 2.2, people wouldnt stop complaining anyway because our phone just doesnt support a lot of things unless we get our phones rooted...

It's not about not getting 2.2. It's about having the stones to release an update that shouldn't have been released because of all the bugs and then making the device end of life. If the Hero doesn't have the power to run 2.1, it shouldn't have been promised and released in the first place. At this point, they owe us some sort of fix to address the performance issues introduced with the 2.1 update. Logic would state that you don't release an update to the OS of a smartphone that causes performance issues. It's different on a computer when you can upgrade the hardware to suit the OS. You can't upgrade the hardware on your handset so the onus is on Sprint to fix the issues they introduced.

I could card less about getting an official 2.2 release from htc, we will have 2.2 anyways. Now I do firmly believe they need to work out the kinks in our 2.1 build, who knows, maybe they will.

the big thing about 2.2 is that it's like 10 times faster or some crazy number like that. It really does operate that much more efficiently.

Would the Hero officially support lwp's and all that stuff? Probably not. But it'd still be a heck of a lot faster than what some people are experiencing with 2.1

Will it be able to handle 2.2? I'm unbelievably happy with my hero and fresh 2.1.2 and I probably wont use anything else for a while. But i'm just curious is the hero's hardware can handle the software...

If anything, Android 2.2 should run even better on our handsets because of the Just In Time (JIT) Java compiler. I think Android 2.2 was developed with speed and efficiency in mind.

I definitely cannot wait for a full port of a Sense UI based Android 2.2 for my Sprint HTC Hero. Once one of the other HTC handsets gets Android 2.2, it should not be long before we start seeing ports for ours.

Everyone or just a few people? The people I know w/ the EVO don't have any issues at all (which are only 4 people)

NYC, I only know of the people I have talked to. 9 in total. 2 say it's awesome and 7 are having issues but are upset. I'm sure when Sprint replaces the ones with serious issues they will like em.
I like em but I don't need the real estate. I am sure plenty of others love it. I said "Everyone I talked to" not everyone that every other person has talked to.

IMO I will stick with my Hero.

Some will like the Hero and others will hate em. Just like any other phone on the market. I just see people come in and complain and instead of attempting to fix the issue and those who have tried to fix it(WTG), they are ready to throw em away.

This is my first post , so please be gentle.

I just bought an EVO and like the features however its just to bulky of a phone for me . So I am going to go with the HERO.

I was told by sprint that if I upgrade to the 2.1 with the HERO I may have issues, that it was not designed for this upgrade in mind. Should I stick with the previous release?

Another option is, should I root the phone ( which I have no idea what that is) so I can get the 2.2 version when it comes out or maybe stick with the 2.1 version and with the rooted phone it will work properly.

I'm so confused, I consider myself pretty tech savvy but coming from a BB I'm new to all of this. Any help would be appreciated. I am also concerned about battery life. I understand how to turn off all the unneccessary crap like Wi-Fi, GPS, Messenger, etc when not in use, but will rooting the phone or upgrading to 2.1 or 2.2 help with that issue as well.
