It appears that the next flagship android phone is coming to Tmobile this holiday season under the name project emerald aka HTC Vision? While not the nexus 2 it is probably the next stock phone that google will operate from.

I wasn't aware that Android in general had a flagship phone. I guess if you really think about it you could say the N1 would be it but, it's not something that was ever confirmed.

I usually refer to it as the flagship because it is the test phone for Google and their android updates and obviously as the Nexus ages they will need another stock android phone to take its place.

I don't want to be a hater but, I really hope not.

When the n1 came out.. It was suppose to be google's baby. It was suppose to go to ALL carriers.

I understand that things fall through and not every carrier is able to get their hands on it.. Be it googles fault or the carrier.. or both.


However, nothing against tmobile.. however, I really don't want *ANY* phone that is suppose to be the "Google Flagship" To *NOT* be an unlocked unbranded device.

Partly for the reason that android is suppose to be an open environment. I don't care if companies offer "discounts" on it with a two year contract or anything.. But, in the case of at&t.. you are going to get crap you don't want (and have to void your warranty to get off.)

I don't know how bad tmo is about bloatware/restrictions.. However, I firmly believe their should be an option on ALL carriers for whatever "flagship" device google chooses next. I actually am annoyed that Verizon and Sprint didn't get the n1.

I understand google not putting it on those carriers.. because, they already have phone's which are about the same price, same hardware and similar style.

However, I don't want to have to hop carriers every year google releases a New flagship device.. OR god forbid not have coverage for whatever carrier the flagship device is on at the moment.

My two pennies.

Verizon probably didn't get the N1 b/c they wanted it to be locked down and harder to root, etc.. As for Sprint.. no clue but we def dropped the ball on that one

I'm sure thats why at&t doesn't offer a discounted version.. they would have probably tried to set something up to auto brick it on root.

Sprint i honestly don't know about.. It could just be the fact that they were getting evo anyway.. I mean... n1 is 180$ on tmo.. so 180 for n1 or 200$ for Evo..

Lets face it... it woulda got nasty with pricing... I'm sure some people would rather go for the n1 for a few reasons.. but, "some" vs "alot" is a pretty different situation.

Your average consumer isn't going to sit down go.. "well the n1 will receive updates first, it is google's offical phone and has the least carrier issue".. If the carrier issue would even be true.. Not that I know for sure.

However, I'm sure you see where that is going.

TMO is open for the most part and does not really bloat your phone. I think that and their willingness to put out a stock android device without all that bloat and UI is the reason that Google chooses to use them.

Also TMO allows you to enable hotspot on your phone and tethering.....ok they don't allow it but they don't go out of their way to try and stop you.

Whoa, you can?! How do you do that? I looked at the list of plans on their website and only found a an unlimited data plan for $40 a month (no voice). Where's the $10 plan?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. It looks like you just have to have a dumb phone and you can add this option online. I've actually grandfathered in an old $30 plan with 1000 minutes and T-Zones, but I have a friend that would love this $10 data option.

verizon and sprint said that the incredible and evo were the reasons for not getting the nexus one. I think it probably had more to do with google saying no to in store sales though.

As far as the thread title goes, I think any phone running the newest hardware and software is going to be Android's flagship device. The Evo kind of sort of is, but it's glaring 30 fps cap and having the phone drop random frames due to lacking the proper graphics drivers makes that a dream. I think the new Droid's going to be unofficial flagship next. For now, I would think the Incredible is the flagship.
