I am writing for advice or peace of mind


I struggled with what phone to get for a month to six weeks

For me, not working not having a lot of money or things, every decision is like the last

As I think about it and get in my head, I think I should humble myself and be like some of the nice men and women who post kind comments to all the arguing about the different fanboys. We are simply lucky , all of us to have smart phones. But also, We, or at least I may have a hard time with this because we always want THE BEST and nothing less, for fear it is making a statement about us.

LOL, but the truth. Anyone agree

Well, being with T-mobile 11 years, I knew that the best there was the My touch slide or the N1. It came to me quickly that there is no competition the N1 is one of the best.

Then it came to switching networks, even considering and iPhone , but also the EVO, Incredible.

I fretted and fretted, and while Best Buy had a big EVO push, the GM knows me and said Eric, why leave 11 years behind all carriers will have what you want, if it is that big screen, etc whatever u want

Even the Verizon guys said Eric it would be foolish to come here when you pay $85+tx and we charge 120+tx why waste your last part of your monthly income

Well, I got the N1 I LOVE IT. I see the Motorola X. I see reviews. I have a little anxiety, the same as I did about the Iphone 4g but I got over that in a day or so thinking that it is not necessarily better

I don't like apple , Id rather get updates quickly. N1 has one of the best screens (indoors lol), I have direct support with Google, better battery than the ones listed, and I don't like the layout of iphone, sense UI, or Motoblur..that stuff

So I want to know if in this last week I could change phones if you, especially those that are not phone bashers of others, would switch. knowing I would pay at least $35 more monthly, is it THAT much better or would you take the advice of one of those gadget blogs, stickk with what I Have, it s a super phone, flip it in a year when Tmo has something new.

Make it a hobby...as long as I am not killling myself over the hobby llike I am now

Well first off, you know what the N1 is capable of, what it's short comings are but with the Motorola X, you won't, so will you want to risk buying a phone that might have a range of issues.

Also have you updated your phone to Froyo? See how you like it with Froyo running as you're on TMo. With the Moto X, you'll have Ecliar and I believe it has motoblur so you won't even know when the update to Froyo will be.

$35 a month adds up...that's $420 a month more...would you really want to risk it considering you might not even like Moto X

If you had the money to burn, I may be tempted by the Motorola Droid X.......

But as you probably haven't, I would stick with the N1, as it will probably be better supported for at least another year (till at least the Gingerbread update).

Not that I am advocating root, but a lot of people are reporting stronger 3G reception with the latest Froyo FRF83 update.

The JIT speed upgrade with Froyo should also not be underestimated - I am running Samsung Galaxy S live wallpapers which are quite demanding on a stock N1 at the moment (due I think to the better graphics chip on the Galaxy). On my latest Froyo build, they run OK.

The N1 is a good phone - I have had mine since the launch & not regretted it. Plus, I have not yet seen a phone that is betters it overall.

Getting the phone itself is NO problem. It is affording the higher monthly bill

I thank you wholeheartedly for your input. But I must play devils advocate.

When you say the N1 is a good phone...that is exactly the impression that I thought you had about it. In fact, isn't is only a good phone to a couple of phones in the Smartphone/Droid market that can do better, but a spectacular phone overall

I don't root, as I know that voids warranties and if something goes up, even your warranty can't help. Correct?

-what is the Jit speed?
-why might you even recommend it if
...it meant leaving 11 years of Tmo to goto Verizon for the money
...I won't use the bigger screen for vids or books. don't prefer the larger size
...wont take high def vids and use on tv
...won't use video calling

Given those and the fact that froyo is coming out even as a download soon, would you still do it

Now the Galaxy S seemed like a Super phone. But 8-900 bucks. It also would have a hard time to get support from Tmo. the head of Ubergizmo said the same as the verizon guys. there are 4 super phones out there all the same you won't go wrong getting one with similar specs

If he included the EVO Incredible Nexus, would the X be much better than those

In a year or so, Tmo will have one also right?

I've had my N1 since launch and it's the first phone that I've had this long (only 5 1/2 months admittedly) that I've not wanted to change yet.

I think that I will keep this phone for up to a year.

Maybe in the UK there's less to turn my head, no Droid Inc, no Evo - but I have experienced Sense and while I liked it at the time, I became frustrated that the UK Hero was (and still is I believe) stuck on 1.5. This really did make a difference as many apps were 1.6 and above.

Basically you could switch for some minor improvements, but why do it? The N1 is still at the forefront of phones right now and certainly won't be outdated at Christmas - even if shiny new 1.5GHz Snapdragon comes out.

EDIT:

And by the way, you don't have to root to apply FRF83 on the T-Mo N1. Simply download the file, reboot into recovery and apply update from SD Card. This is not rooting and will not affect any warranty.

Wow Eric your words ring true for myself as well

I have same type of thinking since I don't have a lot of extra money and want to make sure that I have the absolute best at the lowest possible price per month.

It also happens to me as well where I will see a new monster phone come out like the Evo or DroidX and I start to get that same anxiety that you talk about. I start to think to myself "Should I have waited just a little bit longer? Have I made a mistake?"

Then I start to think about the new phone more and more, even if it is $30 more per month ... "Oh look at that huge 4.3' screen! And the kickstand! Ohhhh the kickstand..."

BUT

There are a couple of things that keep me with my Nexus One and as happy as ever:
1) Savings - I pay only $50/mo (contract free) and save myself $240/year over the carrier locked $70/mo options. So over 2 years I am saving either $480 over the DroidX or $720 over the Evo.
2) Pure Android - both the Evo (Sense) and the DroidX (Motoblur) have tweaks that screw up the android experience for me. A huge example of this is how Sense blocks wiimote controller applications from working which kills my emulator gaming experience that I love.
3) Carrier control - I LOVE how this is the only high end smartphone not under direct control of a carrier on how the UI and updates work. Everytime I look at the free tethering and wiring hotspot features of Froyo I remember that not being under the control of a carrier is a beautiful thing.
4) Tired of always chasing - Where does it end? I know that once I get the Evo that a better phone is coming out in the next 6 months. Not that I want to always keep waiting but I would at least want something more than just a bigger screen (the main feature for me) to lock myself into a 2yr contract for at least $480 more.

I guess I could equate it to having an already hot girlfriend and some new 10 outa 10 fox moves in next door that just seems to have an absolutely AMAZING body that you start to yearn for. "Oh man... look at those specs shes got! 36-24-36 oh man I have to have her..." BUT you also know the girl next door is high maintenance and will cost you a lot more money per month on dates (contract) and also has a psycho dad that is very controlling (the carriers). Also everytime you talk to her she has these quirks that annoy the hell out of you (UI). Eventually your lust for the girl next door starts to fade and you realize just how good you have it with your current girlfriend and you don't want to mess it up.

Fight that anxiety brotha'... its not healthy to always be doubting your choices. You made the right choice with the Nexus One and the longer you can "stay faithful" before upgrading, the better your next phone will be

how do i get back to a mode i believe i saw where i zoom by pinch to zoom where the screen doesn't move all over the place?

1 thing that wasn't mentioned Was the fact that someone else said even Tmobile will come out with 1 of the newest big screen phones within a year or so. Isn't that possible

Double tap on the screen for it to justify. If the words are too small, pinch zoom and double tap and you should be good

But with the zoom, I can double tap ONLY. and it either goes all the way in or all the way out

No pinching moving in and out at varied spots. In fact pinching does nothing

Eric, I know some sites don't have pinch zoom feature. Have you tried it on AF, Phandroid? Zoom in and double tap and it readjusts the (text) posts to fit on the screen. Not sure why this isn't working for you anymore

Don't forget, pinch to zoom will not work on Mobile websites - you need to be on the full websites.

try BBC - Homepage, scroll the the bottom on the page (as it will load the mobile version first) and hit "desktop version".

Also daffy, wow you are being very helpful, but I didn't get everything u sent.

1. The bbc DID set up as mobile. BUT it did not have a full page option at the bottom. anything wrong with my N1 ? LOL.
I was able to put it in the browser and eliminate the mobile part...i got the full verison BUT I WAS NOT ABLE TO PINCH STILL...
You think I should call them. Is there a hidden setting, a problem maybe

3. As for searching for google i/o 2010 is there a particular thing I am looking for. On one page I found NOTHING, on another, a whole list. Maybe you were referring me to the Nexus for beginners??

Hi Eric, try installing a couple of the 3rd party browsers like Dolphin HD (and some other ones) to see if you can use pinch/zoom in there. If you can then something is wrong with the stock browser if the pinch zoom doesn't work on any of the 3rd party browser...than something could be wrong with the pinch/zoom itself.

1. I AM able to pinch to zoom...this means the phone with that is ok , but the browser is NOT ... correct

(well, we know more is wrong , thus the stuff making the phone go back)
