If your thinking your gonna get the for instance the itunes market your gonna be severely disappointed. But hang in there things are getting better, slowly

ive been with android sice day one, it started off so good.
still love the os and how it works its just the market thats getting more and more ridiculous.

have a look at the just in section for all apps and see the amount of junk thats turning up.

google need to limit devs to 3-4 apps a month unless there a top rated dev,
it would stop half the spam over night.

I must say I agree. In the beginning it was exciting to go through the market. Now I can't be bothered to trawl through the endless shitty apps.

If there's an app worth getting it usually makes it to one of the number of dedicated android blogs anyway.

Eh..

I hate to say this..

But, apple advertises "over 200,000 apps"... What they don't advertise is "you'll use less than 20"..

I am not saying I think the market *should* be spammed... but, even in apple's "controlled" market.. there are more than enough "fart" applications.. and if apple didn't try to have "moral reinforcement" I assure you.. there would be another 100,000 apps dedicated to women ect.

this isn't in any way really limited to the android market.. I know this isn't really consolation.. but, I mean.. anytime you hear "over x amount of apps.." do whatever math you want to in order to get that number down to the single digits.

The problem is (with any app market) It is easy to create a "book of women" and appeal to all the people who's phone is their last refuge from prying eyes.

Its hard to create something useful that hasn't been done before, and then do it better enough than the original that people will want it.

With that said.. Good luck. Maybe Google will let you do "refined" searches in the future.. or at least find a way to classify apps differently.. I wonder if maybe there would be a way to do something like that..

Is it something everyone does? yes.
Do I want apps so I can make stupid noises? no


I don't think they are funny and I'm sure even people who do will get bored of them after 5 minutes and go on to the next stupid app.

The Market is just fine. Lots of cool stuff. Don't like it, go buy an iPhone. But don't whine when you see there's even more useless junk there. It might have a few more big name apps, but Android is doing well enough.

You really think that if there is a new amazing must have app in the market that you won't hear about it on the boards or popular forums? Most apps wil go away at some point. Webapps and websites running on htmlx and/or some new form of flash will pick up the slack. Interesting times!

i do know that, still doesn't stop the market becoming very boring and tedious.
i did say the market getting boring, didnt mean the android plattform as a whole.

I no longer browse the Just In section as most of it seems to be the same stuff but what I like to do is keep an eye on Android app reviews or blogs and also look in the Apps and Games sections of this board for some of the best stuff.

Another resource I use is AppBrain - the best Android apps and games on the Android market for suggestions and recommendations based on what I have installed!

bloody hell. you can't comment on something without being told to stop whining and get an iPhone. I can't stand the iphone and no gripe I have with android is enough to make me give up on it. So relax, I'm just looking for improvement, which is what we all want. right?

It's getting better, slowly but surely. It's just a shame that a lot of apps are not as polished or as fully functional as the iPhone or Blackberry apps. You only realise how much is missing from the Android Market in comparison to the Apple Market when you browse the free apps on the Apple Store. That said, I'm more than happy with Android and will enjoy watching it grow.

What the Market needs is the ability to filter, and re-sort. It's just like download.com where there's tons of great stuff hidden in mountains of crap.

If we could filter/sort by rating, and upload date, anything that brings the good apps to the top and the chinese girls and german clocks to the bottom of the list - well that would be the solution.

I've been using Android for a long time now. It is not my assertion that whatever it is now should be accepted indefinitely, but rather that it is actually quite good on balance. Seriously, what are you missing? When I first started using Android devices the market was terrible, and I'd fully admit that even at the time.

Look at how the Market is growing. It's pretty phenomenal the choices we have compared to even 6 months ago. Top apps are showing up all the time. We have Dropbox, Ebay, Evernote, Epocrates, Twitter, TiKL, and Audible is in beta. I never implied it is as good as the iPhone app store, but Android is improving dramatically. What I am saying, is that if the rate of Market improvement isn't enough for you, that in my opinion, you are being unrealistic.

Perhaps I did not full explain myself previously; there is a lot of crap in the Market, but there is also a lot of crap in the App Store. I have an iPod Touch for testing purposes (I'm a freelance writer), and I keep an eye on what is in the App Store. There's a lot junk underneath the shiny happy apps there as well. In my estimation, the proportion of complete junk is pretty similar between the two ecosystems. It's not accurate to point to junk apps as a way to illustrate the problems with an application ecosystem, because that exists everywhere.

What Apple does very well, is they present high quality apps in a number of ways. It makes the junk sink to the bottom more thoroughly. This is where Google could improve the experience. Maybe when we see the online Market launch, this will happen.

I would advocate a rating system similar to the one employed by Netfilx, wherein you rate apps you've used (or intentionally ignored) and are then be presented with a list of app recommendations based on your ratings.
