I think I want a hero

Hey,

I've never had an Android phone, though I've been wanting one for a while now. And as I've recently gotten a job, I can afford one.

I live in Ireland, and my choices arent great. I've narrowed it down to either a HTC Hero, (€310) or a HTC Legend (€380), but I'm not sure which I should get.

I dont really know enough about Android to be able to tell if the Legend is worth the extra €70, I've looked at the specs for both, and the Legend doesnt really seem like that much of a step up.

I was hoping that maybe someone here might be able to give me some perspective, should I go for the Legend or the Hero? Is there anything major one offers that the other doesnt? etc?

Thanks,

Flin

EDIT: Its also worth mentioning that both phones are on a mobile carrier I dont want to be on. So I plan to unlock whatever one I get, so whether or not I can do that will have a huge affect on my choice.

That seems like a lot of money for a Hero. How much more is one of the newer phones with the 1GHz cpu (N1, Incredible, etc.). A lot of the newer games run laggy or not at all on the Hero even with it overclocked plus it seems like it's the beginning of the end for the Hero. If you've been saving a while and this phone is going to be used for the next couple of years, I think you'll start to regret it in a few months as everthing starts to pass you by. Have you considered buying the phone online if the local selection is that limited?

The Desire is just out recently here (last week or so) And its something like 600. Ireland is pretty much hell for phones. The Hero was the first Android phone made available here, it came out about 3 months ago... the Legend is brand new here.

Even when it comes to ordering online, shipping costs end up making stuff way too expensive. :(

Yeah, I think I'll go for the Legend then. I went to a phone store today to have some hands on with them, the Heros trackball has really put me off it, it seems so unneccisary, I mean, does it serve any purpose? At least the Legends is optical so its not jutting out like a bad pimple. :S

Thanks a lot folks,

Now I'm off to find some nice apps and a way to unlock it. :D

Navigating around web sites, for one. Trying to select links with the average-sized finger is an exercise in frustration. It also makes selecting text much more precise, which is very useful for replying to forum posts. ;)

Persuaded you into what? I also just found out that the cpu on the Hero is missing some instruction set so the one video player that can actually play more than mp4 won't work. Hopefully in the final version it will do software decode and the cpu is fast enough to keep up. (yxplayer has been it/miss for me unfortunately).

Well, you guys have me persuaded. Now I'll just have to wait for my pay cheque, which doesn't arrive until next Friday :(

This next week, is going to be such a drag...

I use the trackball a lot. If I mistype or something, I scroll back to it. It is fantastically useful.

Get a Legend though, the extra money is worth it, going to a phone on 1.5 is a piss off. I am having incompatibilities.

Hey,

So, my situation changed a little. I found out Windows Mobile 7 is out in October, which I'll be snapping up right away. So I went for the cheaper option of a Hero since I still need a phone now. It only cost my 160 euro (Big step down from 310 eh?). A friend of mine sold it to me, and its in great condition.
I'm just happy to finally have an Android to call my own.
